Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half

Morning all.

A very early start to this week's chat thread, as I'm 8 hours ahead of the UK right now.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness one more time

Hopefully by now, low carbing is starting to become a habit rather than a hardship. We're out of the dreaded weeks 4 & 4, so for those who haven't seen much movement on the scales, things should start to get going again now (although don't expect to see huge losses from here on - around 1-2lbs a week is a normal and healthy rate of loss)

For those who aren't seeing any movement in the bathroom Grin make sure you're eating plenty of fat - see how you can find ways to add more fat to your diet. Similarly water. And look at what you're eating, and be sure that you're getting your carbs in the main from veg and salad.

I have noticed that there's a fair bit of slippage cheating starting to creep in, and I'm calling you all on that! Remember that this isn't an especially forgiving way of eating, and if you cheat, you won't lose!

But good luck for the rest of the week

Just watched the truth about carbs on BBC iplayer followed by the fast fix on ITV online as motivation.

Im glad that there are more and more programs identifying carbs as an issue and talking about weight loss and ketosis etc etc. im not fully convinced by the fast fix way of doing things, wouldn't they have had similar results with a clinically run strict low carb diet without resorting to a liquid (and by the looks of it disgusting) diet? They were all overweight so losing a stone or two over 4 weeks would not have been beyond the realms of possibility. Two of them were ready to drop out, i bet they wouldn't have said that if they had been eating food!

ajandjjmum · 14/06/2018 17:24

Abbey that's fabulous to see. Your first photo is how I look - if I could get to your second photo (jeans as well!), I would be well chuffed. Brilliant.

Rshard · 14/06/2018 17:31

You look gorgeous abbey!

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 17:32

Nan0 ooh...fish sauce. I do love a bit o’ nam pla 😏

Leapin and ragz thanks for confirming grabbability of egg wraps/pancakes. I’m going to experiment tomorrow night with the leftover fajita fixings.

Seafour a celery stick, even one stuffed with things, is not lunch. Water water water. Veg veg veg. Fat fat fat. And (I know it’s hard) try not to stress about looking great at wedding. You’ll look great anyway and it’s a joyous occasion. Cortisol isn’t good for our diets. Wink

abbey I’m on phone and had only seen the difference in the two photos without clicking. Now that I’ve clicked...WOW! Not only is it most definitely not mutton dressed as lamb, the overall outfit is sleek and sophisticated (even in jeans) and I’m going to respectfully disagree with gammelragz re floaty top because I don’t think the silhouette needs any change, particularly. You could wear a floaty top if you like, but the fitted one you’re wearing is marvellous.

Most people think loose/large clothing “hides” their fat. Wel, it hides rolls, sure, but always makes us look bigger (unless we are Elle MacPherson, who can wear a mountain of floaty and still look like a pole).

We all look better in clothing that fits us and works with our shape, regardless of size. Floaty clothing is nice, too, just not when used as camouflage.

abbey44 · 14/06/2018 17:36

Thank you all, you're very kind Grin but yes, I do feel a bit giddy today. I think the looser top idea is a good one till I'm a bit closer to my eventual target, but I wanted to get an idea for myself just how much difference there was.

shagme - that made me laugh - you're so right. Except it seemed to go on bloody quickly at times (um, that'd be the lasagne/Malteser combo diet, I'm guessing).

So, not a muttony 60-year-old then...? Phew. Thanks.

ilovecherries · 14/06/2018 17:40

You look fabulous, Abbey. Really good, be happy with yourself. :)I know what you mean about perception though, I have become almost unable to dress myself without consulting the internet, as I have no idea what clothes size I actually need, or how I look in them. This is mine, which I find quite terrifying.

Someone up thread mentioned the low fat / artificial sweetener rubbish in school dinners, which got me thinking. My little one starts school in September and I'd just assumed I'd send her for hot lunches but now I'm reconsidering. If you were to do school packed lunches what would you put in them?

abbey44 · 14/06/2018 18:10

Wow, cherries, that's quite a difference too - I wonder how long it takes our brain to 'catch up' when we change our body shape so much?

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 18:28

Abbey that's fabulous to see. Your first photo is how I look - if I could get to your second photo (jeans as well!), I would be well chuffed.

ajandjjmum, you can Flowers

cherries you look splendid. I love how you’re wearing an above-the-knee dress because you want to and it works.

I’ve seen no mutton in these threads and if someone asked I would be politely direct.

We don’t all have to be put out in the fashion pasture for being over 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. We are not our parents or grandparents. We have hair dye (and wigs Flowers), and excellent serums, and waxing, and Pilates, and running, and LCHF. We have experience and wisdom that lambs don’t generally have. We have lives, and we are going to live them to the fullest.

We are not trying to be lamb, we are trying to be the best, healthiest version of ourselves, whatever age we are.

Frankly, I think of myself as a very sexy, elegant, funky and funny mutton. I might be deluded, but mutton is delicious, when seasoned and cooked properly. Hmm Wink

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 18:29

.

Oh gawd, when did I become Auntie Mame??!!

abbey44 · 14/06/2018 18:44

ajandjjmum - if I can, then you can too - I was the biggest carb-eater and comfort ate like you wouldn't believe, but stick with it, and believe in yourself Flowers

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 18:47

@farine

Would you want the lunches to be low carb for your little one?

Im planning to do a moderately low carb for mine when he is in school.

I would do a combination of the following,
babybel, cooked sausage, egg, ham/cheese wrap
berries, apple, tangerine, grapes
cherry tomatos, hummus, carrot sticks
carton of milk
perhaps a small chocolate snack such as homemade choc crispy so its lighter.

depends on the child, how healthy they are how strict you want to be. i suspect i may cave if my son starts comparing his lunch to others and wants something sweet.

If you google 'low carb kids packed lunch' you get loads of fantastic ideas.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 18:53

www.ditchthecarbs.com/low-carb-kids-3/

this is also a good resource. alot depends on how much you are willing to cook from scratch.

Pulled pork and coleslaw
frittata
scotch eggs

Does anyone know if today kids are allowed to chill their lunch box? that would mean a not more options.

farine · 14/06/2018 19:01

Thanks @Iamnotacerealkiller yes I think I will try and keep the carbs down. I look back at my childhood when convenience foods were taking off and think all that sugar and bad carbs probably didn't do me very good in long term. I then compounded this with years of low fat food.

So, I want my little one to have a healthy start and school dinners worry me with the low fat, high artificial sweeteners.

Your list is great and I will take a pic of it and start testing them out.

I was thinking of a bento box and have just been watching some you tube videos. I think if I plan smartly and have a two week list to work through I could do this, and double up with prep for dinners. Just a fun evening making lists!

All summer to test them out

farine · 14/06/2018 19:02

Just found a kids bento box that sits in its own cooler bag which might work

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 19:10

@farine
strangly i was just looking at bento boxes on Amazon! they are so cute!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 19:12

My concern with low carb food for kids is teachers calling me to tell me that i'm not feeding my child healthily and im killing him or something (sigh) ive actually doing research looking into how much carb kids actually can store in the liver etc etc...my son is only 4 months old.

Im hoping the world will be a more fat friendly place in 4 years!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 14/06/2018 19:14

farine I have a PackIt bag for my lunch. The lining of the bag itself contains freezer gel. You fold the bag up and pop it into the freezer overnight. It's great!

abbey You look bloody fantastic! I think you should keep with the fitted top, it really shows off your figure.

Stunt I keep meaning to ask, and the last few posts have reminded me to do so: is it possible / healthy to bring up a child on a LCHF diet? I'm forever gobsmacked by how much sugar the kids at my nursery eat each day, and, thinking about my possible future offspring, I'd really want them to avoid it as much as possible. But how far can you go with a child?

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 19:17

Stunt, i would also like to know.

LC is perfectly healthy im sure but i do wonder if it is setting them up to fail as the world is so carby.

my sons first foods will be egg followed by meat. i do plan to feed him carbs but quite late into weaning.

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 19:32

iamnotacerealkiller out of curiosity, why not start him off with different veg?

NorthernKnickers · 14/06/2018 19:48

Wow @abbey44!! Witwoo 😘 you look amazing (not at all mutton!!!). Really well done...that's some journey you've been on to lose so much in just a year 💐💐💐

JimmyGrimble · 14/06/2018 19:52

Quite fed up. No meaningful loss for the last two weeks and I've stalled at exactly the same weight as I did last year (when the stall lasted 6 weeks + and I just gave up).
After thinking i was in the menopause I have had two periods in a row so feel generally rubbish anyway. Am also not sleeping. Am also not breaking any rules.

BIWI · 14/06/2018 19:55

@Seafour While I suspect you need fewer calories, as you're wheel-chair bound, I don't think you're eating enough either!

I'd definitely ditch the BPC and have something with more nutrition in it, even it it's just one boiled egg. And - seriously - one stick of celery for lunch?!

OP posts:
Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 19:55

@ShagMeRiggins

i'm starting with meat/eggs because the first nutrient that a baby runs low on is iron and these two are recommended first food in the low carb world which i think has far more valuable things to say nutritionally then the gov unfortunately. it makes sense that egg is good nutrition for baby right:)

we are planning on doing BLW anyway so no purees.

following that i will start on veg and cheese/yogurt, followed by red/black fruit followed by starchy veg and tropical fruit.

this all sounds very regimented written down but it will probably be more mixed up then this so he has variety and will likely just start feeding him our whole meals depending on how he goes. My oh is keen to give him potato for some reason??

BIWI · 14/06/2018 19:58

@TimeIhadaNameChange

I think, overall, I'd just look to reduce the carbs in my child's diet at meals that you can control and seem 'normal'.

So, breakfast and dinner I'd look to be lower carb, but then I'd send them in with a packed lunch that is like that of all their mates. Don't underestimate the power of peer pressure!

And to be honest, children burn up such a lot of energy that I really think it won't make any difference to them. I seriously, seriously wouldn't be looking to prevent them enjoying the same treats as their friends, so I'd still include crisps and chocolate/biscuits (as much as these are allowed in a packed lunch)
