Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half

Morning all.

A very early start to this week's chat thread, as I'm 8 hours ahead of the UK right now.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness one more time

Hopefully by now, low carbing is starting to become a habit rather than a hardship. We're out of the dreaded weeks 4 & 4, so for those who haven't seen much movement on the scales, things should start to get going again now (although don't expect to see huge losses from here on - around 1-2lbs a week is a normal and healthy rate of loss)

For those who aren't seeing any movement in the bathroom Grin make sure you're eating plenty of fat - see how you can find ways to add more fat to your diet. Similarly water. And look at what you're eating, and be sure that you're getting your carbs in the main from veg and salad.

I have noticed that there's a fair bit of slippage cheating starting to creep in, and I'm calling you all on that! Remember that this isn't an especially forgiving way of eating, and if you cheat, you won't lose!

But good luck for the rest of the week

Flowers

Hi all - thanks for all the supportive messages. The 10 year relationship really did need to end, but instead of facing up to it I sought carb comfort and we all know what that means ! 4weeks of controlled , enjoyable eating with no hunger surges just helped give me the energy I needed to address it . LCHF has really put me back on the rails again in more ways than one . In terms of the BBC/ Tom Kerridge/ Government attitudes to LCHF Pretty , its not “ too hard “ for the general public - what could be simpler than BIWI.s rules? It’s just the massive economic implications to the food industry who would of course be reluctant.to see us lead a low-carb life . Imagine going in to Tesco’s if they removed all the carby or pseudohealthy low fat food ! Also there is far less profit to be made by selling food in its natural unadulterated state. Its the same with diabetes and the drug companies, if all Type 2 diabetics ( not so much type 1 as that’s a bit more complicated ) adapted a LCHF lifestyle they wouldn’t need any hypoglycaemics at all. Hypoglcaemic drugs are another multi billion dollar industry which they are not going to let go of lightly. You can bet that the D of H / BBC get bombarded by counter propaganda to LCHF by the economic giants . Even Michael Moseley and Hugh Fearnley Whitting thingy avoid wholly backing the low carb message. thankfully Tim Noakes and Gary Taubes are experts who seem to have the balls to challenge the status quo - some of heir lectures are on you-tube well worth viewing . Rant over - KOKO everyone!

Oh finally back in here after having been logged out, trying to find my password etc. It means I’ve read everything but failed to keep up so well done for the many great losses and sorry to those dealing with many real life challenges. Here at BlackMozart HQ I am crossing anything that can be crossed but not eating chocolate whilst my eldest DD grapples with her first job interview - a day long assessment centre - and then later will get her Masters degree classification.

I put on a 1lb this week - would a kind poster please add that for me - but it was expected due to 25th wedding anniversary celebrations, curry and a bottle of wine over the weekend. I have had three very good days so far this week and intend to stick with it through the weekend. A celebratory glass may be taken with DD but that can wait until Monday when she’s finally leaving uni for good and coming home.

Prettybird the Blood Sugar Diet is ripped off based on Prof Roy Taylor's research at the University of Newcastle which uses the shakes to reverse diabetes.

Cherries the messages on saturated fat and cholesterol are changing. In the latest US nutritional guidelines they have removed the recommendation to limit dietary cholesterol. And there have been a lot of news coverage about saturated fat being unfairly demonised.

prettybird · 14/06/2018 11:36

I remember reading about someone having an epiphany (and then having the same one myself) when pushing a trolley down aisle after aisle of "low fat" products in the States, surrounded by morbidly obese Americans who were busy filling their trolleys with these products ConfusedShock

I get really angry when the council's facilities company (Cordia: what's called up here an Aleo, an Arms Length External Organisation) who supply the food into schools sent around a leaflet telling us, as parents, to give our primary age children low fat cheese and low fat yoghurts. Angry Needless to say, I ignored that Grin

At one point they were consulting to stop all school kids leaving school premises (including secondary schools) in order to try to force them to eat school meals! Shock (No added salt, no added sugar in any of the desserts, bug that's ok because they use apple juice and sweetener instead Confused; teachers keep a supply of salt sachets to make their own portions palatable Hmm)

3stonedown · 14/06/2018 11:42

@BlackMozart updated for you on spreadsheet

Gammeldragz · 14/06/2018 13:42

prettbird we got the same message here about giving kids low fat. I wasn't even LC then and I laughed at it.

Came to work without a packed lunch today so had to hunt in Asda, managed to find a tapas thing for £2 that had cheese, chorizo and a few peppers/tomatoes. It wasn't as LC as I'd have likes but less than 10g for all of it. Also found a new dark chocolate, Heidi 85%, which is very nice.

Seafour · 14/06/2018 13:54

Haven't caught up on the thread yet but feeling very frustrated because I've gained 2lbs again.

Family and pa keep telling me I'm not eating enough......
Could this be accurate?

Yesterday I ate

B bpc
L stick of celery filled with soft blue cheese, pork scratchings
D chicken & bacon salad with oily dressing & mayo

Today

B bpc
L omelette
D venison stir fry

I'm drinking loads of water and have one coffee with cream per day.

Rayna37 · 14/06/2018 14:18

I'd say definitely not enough seafour but it's ok I've had your portion too Grin

Pretty disastrous lunch! Standing with 20lbs of baby in a sling for 2 hrs to see the Queen and Duchess visiting Chester maybe not my best plan and dived into the nearest good restaurant with high chairs afterwards. There was bread with pate and a pork chop with some carby bits (apple, carrots, tiny taste of dauphinoise etc).

Leelaseye · 14/06/2018 14:32

That doesn't sound like a lot of food at all seafour.

I've had what feels like the most awful sugar crash this afternoon. I ate 3 teaspoons of peanut butter earlier (14g carbs per 100g) - could this have caused it? I've not felt so wiped out since starting boot camp.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/06/2018 14:55

Thanks for all the supportive comments everyone, reading back my post is does sound like i have had a life saving spinal operation or something which isn't the case, just minor surgery in my back which make sitting on sofas and breast feeding rather painful because of where they cut.

feeling much better now especially as i have lost all but one lb of what i gained already.

onwards and downwards

@prettybird

Ug completely with you about Tom Kerridge, i watch his program but then stopped in disgust at his betrayal! its hardy surprising they all lost weight when they are all being filmed!! what was the point of tom even being there if he wasn't going to use the method HE used, honestly, its fear of going against the status quo. (shakes fist at Ancel Keys!!)

i actually thought the vlcd program was more interested as at least it debunked on myths.

RE low fat foods. im frustrated by the govs eat less move more scheme as it offered 'food swaps' all of which were choosing low fat versions or sweetener versions of foods! it even offered money off those foods.

My health insurance offers rewards for healthy behavior but gave me a red mark because i dont eat low fat stuff. MADNESS!!

ilovecherries · 14/06/2018 15:27

It doesn’t seem a lot to me, seafour, but I always prefer to eat my calories rather than drink them. It seems quite light on green veg

farine · 14/06/2018 15:38

I think I'd be ravenous if that's all I ate seafour. Can you up the portions or introduce a few snacks? I'd definitely increase the veggies at lunch and dinner

For lunch I had a chicken thigh slow roasted with lemon, garlic, thyme and olive oil with a massive bowl of mixed tomatoes in oil with salt and oregano.

Travelling this evening so will need to pick something at a service station - probably go for mini chorizo, cheese and maybe some celery? If anyone has any great service station recommendations let me know.

Going to ease off water now as can't get stuck needing the loo! Had about 2 litres so far and will drink more when I arrive but perhaps a little under today

StuntNun · 14/06/2018 16:06

Seafour it does depend on how active you are since you are a wheelchair user. Do you think that substantially reduces your calorie requirements? Some of the foods you listed are calorie dense so could it seem like it isn't much food in terms of amount to others? Having said that the omelette and venison today are potentially lower in fat than optimal. Was yesterday's chicken white or brown meat? I know you're on a mission to lose weight in time for your big event but 2lb up could easily be a blip, you aren't necessarily doing anything wrong.

abbey44 · 14/06/2018 16:44

Oh Lord, I'm almost hyperventilating with excitement here and I've just got to share it - I know you lot will understand what this means. My new pair of jeans just arrived and I've tried them on and THEY FIT! They're a 12... OK, they're Next so generous, but even so...a 12!! I've been feeling a bit meh over this BC as the weight has been coming off pound by grudging pound, but this has motivated me a whole load.

And just so you can see the difference, here's the photograph of me taken last August which kickstarted all this off. I was SO appalled when I saw it that I set myself the target of getting back to a size 12 (I was 18/20 then - those white trousers were busting at the seams and I had to wear the long top as I couldn't fasten them properly Blush). The other picture is me today. Tell me honestly though - do they make me look a bit mutton dressed as lamb? My perception is still a bit skewy, if you know what I mean. (If they do, I'll only wear them in the house Grin)

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 17:00

I have some beautiful tuna steaks for dinner tonight. Any inspiration re marinade/flavours?

prettybird · 14/06/2018 17:00

Not mutton dressed up as lamb at all - you look fab abbey44 ! SmileFlowersStarGlitterball

I have a similar pair of white trousers that this time last year I could barely wear and that are now baggy on me! Smile

BTW: I took my Size 14 Chinos back to M&S after the belt disintegrated. I tried on the Size 12s but they were still a bit tight (that nasty horizontal wrinkling on the thighs and gaping pockets Blush). So I exchanged for another pair of Size 14s - but I am keeping them "new" for as long as possible, so that if I have a whoosh, I might take them back (unworn) and get the Size 12s after all Grin

Nan0second · 14/06/2018 17:00

abbey44 you look brilliant and the jeans really suit you :)

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 17:00

(Will have a look through recipes but it’s so much fun when someone replies with a recipe that she absolutely adores and wants to share with the world Grin)

3stonedown · 14/06/2018 17:06

abbey congrats on the 12 that's amazing. I can't see your pictures due to my rubbish app but I'm sure you look fab!

devoncreamtea · 14/06/2018 17:12

The jeans look great on you abbey.

Well done as well for sticking with it for nearly a year now! That's some iron will power 🙂

Nan0second · 14/06/2018 17:15

Tuna steak - watercress and Stilton sauce?
I usually go plain to be fair and then use stir fry veg to make things lively (soy, fish sauce, garlic, ginger)

Waswittyonce · 14/06/2018 17:15

Wow Abbey, you look fabulous! And no, you certainly don't look like mutton dressed as lamb, put that thought out of your head right now!

Gammeldragz · 14/06/2018 17:16

abbey the jeans look fab, Congratulations. Not mutton at all, though you could wear a floaty top as they are quite tight, just to balance it out a bit.

seafour have you calculated your BMR, calories required before exercise. I'd imagine your calorie requirements are lower than someone more mobile, but probably not as lower as you think? I would try to have more veg and fat, as others have said. Maybe cut out the BPC unless there's nothing else you can have at that time of day (pre make a batch of mini pastryless quiche, or some hardboiled eggs?).

ShagMeRiggins · 14/06/2018 17:18

I've been feeling a bit meh over this BC as the weight has been coming off pound by grudging pound, but this has motivated me a whole load.

Well that’s how it went on, you donkey! Grin

Really pleased to hear you motivated, and thanks for photo. Looking good.

farine · 14/06/2018 17:20

abbey you look tres chic in that outfit. Such an amazing transformation from last year! You must be giddy with joy
