Week 2 - May '18 Low Carb Bootcamp - my favourite week!

BIWI · 21/05/2018 07:20

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet

I love this week, seeing how much weight people lose, and especially as it's always such a surprise for newbies and those who feared that this WOE wouldn't work!

I hope you've all seen good results.

If you haven't - don't despair, but have a think about the week just gone. Look at what you were eating/drinking and consider how well you followed Bootcamp rules.

Any problems, as ever, post them on the thread.

Any tips on how to fry up shredded cabbage? Just throw some butter in a pan and the cabbage or is there anything that can go with it? Or can I do a version of bubble and sqeak?

Destinysdaughter · 25/05/2018 18:49

farine You can make cabbage carbonara which is nice, with bacon, mushrooms and garlic. Sorry I don't have a recipe, someone made it on the last BC.

clare8allthepies · 25/05/2018 19:04

Hope you feel better soon Seafour Flowers

We also had kebab for dinner, DP and I got a chicken one and a doner one and swapped half over. Yummy!

ScienceNut · 25/05/2018 19:26

Wow just made a yummy dinner, good dollop of buttered Corgetti, add a dollop of double cream, salt papper and dried parsley. Then add a fried in butter sea bass fillet on top. Was scrumptious!

8.3lb off so far!

HoweverI do have a question, going round to a friends for a chinese tomorrow, what can I order or do I need to take dinner?

Twoo · 25/05/2018 19:44

Seafour sorry to hear you’re not well. Flowers

LeapinLizards · 25/05/2018 19:50

@Seafour that sounds really serious. I feel quite alarmed on your behalf. Hope you are ok Flowers

Made a delicious salad tonight, had it with chicken stuffed with marscapone, garlic, thyme and parsley. Yum! It's from The Guardian, here's the salad recipe

Turkish-style slaw (pictured above)
Prep 20 min
Serves 4

Juice of 1-2 lemons
10 ripe cherry tomatoes, deseeded and juice kept
1 garlic clove, lightly crushed
½ small red onion or 1 shallot, thinly sliced
2 spring onions
1 bunch radishes, cut in to eighths
¼ small white cabbage, finely shredded
â…› red cabbage, finely shredded
1-2 chillies, finely chopped
â…“ cucumber, deseeded and julienned (skin left on)
2-3 large handfuls flat-leaf parsley, chopped
2 handfuls fresh mint, chopped
1 large pinch pul biber (Turkish chilli flakes)
Salt and black pepper

To serve
3 tbsp Greek yoghurt
1 tbsp harissa
1 tbsp pistachios, chopped

First juice the lemons, mix with the juice from the cherry tomatoes and the garlic and set aside.

Combine all the vegetables in a bowl and refrigerate. Five minutes before serving add the herbs, chilli, seasoning and lemon juice mix to taste. If you add the salt and lemon too early you’ll end up with a salad that’s far too wet and lacks crunch.

Serve the yoghurt, harissa and pistachios on the side.

clare8allthepies · 25/05/2018 20:22

That sounds delicious Destinysdaughter I love herby salads.

Laska5772 · 25/05/2018 20:30

I had 2 chicken thighs roasted in oil garlic and lemon, with spinach rocket and watercress, avocado and courgettes and mushrooms sauteed in evoo and more garlic l.. was Yum..
I was really hungry before I ate it, now stuffed. (everyone else had sausages, chips, coleslaw and french bread with their chicken.. .....actually I just didn't want any of that at all Smile..

water with a slice and ice .. instead of Wine

Leelaseye · 25/05/2018 20:52

Urgh...totally fell off the wagon tonight and had wine. I'm caring for my very elderly Nan whilst my mum (her regular carer) is on holiday. Between that and my kids I was a bit frazzled.
Feel utterly shit about it as I've not deviated up till now Sad

JuneBalloon · 25/05/2018 21:24

Am hiding in bed so as to resist temptation. BIL is visiting this weekend... he's a vegan. He's going to have to make do with lots of frozen ready meals!

Goodasgoldilox · 25/05/2018 22:30

Seafour it sounds as if you are coping with some very serious stuff... and yet still following this bootcamp. You are inspiring.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 25/05/2018 22:51

Totally agree with @asgoodasgoldillox - @seafarer you are amazing! Don't know your history but my goodness you sound so positive. Inspirational in fact, thank you.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 25/05/2018 22:53

Sorry - got your name wrong @seafour in previous post.Grin

MumOfAPickle · 25/05/2018 23:41

Happy Friday everyone! seafour really hope you're doing ok Flowers

Weekends are so hard, I definitely associate the end of a busy week with relaxing with a drink and some junk food! However, have stayed strong today. DH was out tonight which makes it easier for me I think as he does have a habit of bringing me a glass of wine!

Had a late breakfast of the last bit of my cauliflower cheese bake that I've been eating for lunch all week. Bit weird but did the job!
Lunch at a friends but she knows I'm LC ing so there was chicken wings, salad, smoked salmon etc so plenty for me to pick at.
Dinner was fab! Had egg and (celeriac) chips! With some garlic mayo for dipping - absolutely lush! They do the delouis garlic mayo in Waitrose and it's something like 0.5g carbs per 100g!

Koko everyone!

Ooh and I weighed this morning and I was another pound down - if I can keep it up over the weekend I may be in danger of a mini whoosh (unheard of for me)

Seafour · 26/05/2018 00:10

Thanks everyone, I have some complex health challenges due to a high level spinal cord injury. So quick explanation:
My right arm and hand are pretty useless, little feeling other than pain and not much useful function. I have patchy paralysis from chest to butt, I have some feeling and function in the front of my thighs, nothing from the knees down.
The most serious bit is a completely paralysed diaphragm, no cough reflex and no automatic swallow reflex.
No working bodily functions other than the ability to unashamedly enjoy sex and orgasm Blush
I pee using catheters, crap using an irrigation system and breathe using some very small but mighty muscles in my chest when I'm well and awake and my breathing gets taken over completely by machine overnight and during parts of the day, if I'm unwell or generally can't be arsed to breathe for myself.
I do have a fully functional left arm and hand and my brain isn't too bad either.

Add all that together and you get one fully functional limb and respiratory failure

ItsalmostSummer · 26/05/2018 03:36

Okay, I think I just indulged a whole lot of whipped cream. It was totally worth it Grin

ItsalmostSummer · 26/05/2018 03:39

Sorry to hear that Seafour. I havent followed your story here but that sounds pretty hard. Well done to you for doing low carbing :)

Mightybanhammer · 26/05/2018 06:37

Morning All

I hope I can post my success so far as am not strictly a boot camper and I have been eating a little fruit, but otherwise following the same low carb high fat regime.

At the start of May I was the heaviest I had ever been, miserable, very unhealthy, tired stressed and bloated. I had insomnia, hot flushes and palpitations at night. Last year I lost a lot of weight but piled it back on v rapidly and more besides. Although I love to cook, i had fallen into the habit of eating take aways and ready meals. And drinking too much alcohol. Taking next to no exercise.

I weighed myself today and I have lost 12.5 pounds already. I am visibly slimmer. I can cope with stress so much better. I've joined a 10000steps a day challenge at work and am smashing it with a 13 000 step average so far ( not bad with an office job) ! Miles ahead (literally) of some of my younger colleagues.

I get up really early, refreshed and ready to go. Sleep brilliantly. No palpitations and the hot flushes dialled down to about 2 out of 10 ( 8 or9 before). I am energised, focussed and happy.

I feel amazing- and feel much slimmer inside than I actually am if that makes sense. 3 to 4 stone to go I reckon, but loving it this far!

I'm making a conscious effort to eat more fish, which has been a revelation. You can buy sealable bags to cook the fish in - add butter oil, s and p and herbs- yummy - satisfying and doesn't leave you feeling over full.

The other thing is eating slower and recognising when I am full and shock horror - leaving food if I have eaten enough.

Loving it! Grin

StuntNun · 26/05/2018 07:09

Epic dinner failure last night after everything in the veg drawer turned out to be mouldy Envy except one very elderly yellow pepper. Then it turned out that the Szechuan ribs DH had bought took 2.5 hours to cook (only discovered at 7:30 p.m.) We ended up getting Chinese takeout, only discovering while on the phone to order that they have a minimum order number of three items for delivery whereas we only wanted two. So far too much food was eaten. It was all low carb stuff, just too much of it. Our local Chinese takeaway does this amazing crispy fried lamb with big lettuce leaves instead of pancakes which is a fab low carb alternative to crispy fried duck and really easy to make yourself with leftover lamb or beef from a roast.

Anyway, I'm going to aim to eat less today to compensate, which seems to be what a naturally slim person would do automatically. I'm planning to only have two meals today and see how my hunger levels go. I'm making the traditional astronaut breakfast of steak and eggs then hoping to make it through to dinner with just a snack at lunchtime. DH is making duck legs for dinner so he'll have to forage for FLGV to have with it.

farine · 26/05/2018 07:15

Grrrwwwww, put on weight again, what's going on? I promise I am following bootcamp rules to the letter so why the gain? I'm now heavier than I was on Monday morning weigh-in? Slow loss I can accept but weight gain doesn't make sense.

StuntNun · 26/05/2018 07:30

Mighty thanks for sharing your success story, it's really motivating to hear that you've seen such huge improvements in your health as well as losing weight. I'm heading into perimenopause myself and after watching my mum suffer through years of hot flushes and end up on HRT it's reassuring to know that I might not suffer as much thanks to my diet. Well done on increasing your steps, that's a big boost to your health as well.

I'm a big fan of whipped cream too Summer but have a look at the calories before you indulge again, it's 5.5 times as calorific as wine!

Pickle what a great friend you have to cater for you with lots of low carb food. I'm sure you particularly enjoyed your lunch.

Get back on plan ASAP Leela wine isn't the worst thing you could have had and it probably won't have derailed you unless it was a couple of bottles!

Science for your Chinese takeaway I would go for dry ribs for a starter and something like beef in black bean sauce for a main as one of the least sweetened sauces. Have a look at their veggie sides as you may be able to get mushrooms or cauliflower or beansprouts to go with it.

Farine I microwave shredded cabbage with a little bit of water then drain off the water and drench the lot in melted butter.

StuntNun · 26/05/2018 07:33

Farine my weight fluctuates massively over time so it's difficult to see the overall downward trend unless you look at monthly weigh-ins. Could that be happening to you too? Have you checked your measurements? Sometimes your waist, hips, or bust get smaller even when the scales don't change or go up. List out your food for the last two or three days and we can make suggestions.

TheGherkin · 26/05/2018 07:36

Hello everyone. Happy weekend!

I have a NSV of sorts to report. I ordered some clothes from Sainsbury’s (25% off at the mo). I was feeling fat when I ordered and it’s all too big so will have to go back.

SeaFour are you still up for the great North run? I’ve done no training whatsoever so suspect you could go faster than me. But I’m still game if you are Grin

antimatter · 26/05/2018 07:48

@Farine I braise my shredded savoy cabbage with 100 g of butter,1/3 cup of water for about 8-10 min on the stove with the lid on.
I sometimes add florets of broccoli after 5 min to save time. Then just some salt just at the end.
