Xin nian kuai le!

Happy Chinese New Year. We're in week 8, and 8 is considered a lucky number in Chinese, so hopefully this week will be a good one for us all Grin

Here's the spreadsheet

A very cold week is ahead of us, so hope you all stay warm and safe

Well after seeing 'cabbage carbonara' mentioned on here so many times, my curiosity got the better of me so I found a recipe online and made it today. I only had red cabbage but it was yum!! Gave me a lovely warm feeling in my tum😀 It's a snow day here so I'm snuggled up on the sofa and watching St Elmo's Fire, stay warm and safe everyone! 💜

BerylStreep · 02/03/2018 14:37

What are the Lidl protein rolls everyone talks about? I've never seen anything like that in my Lidl.

BerylStreep · 02/03/2018 14:39

PrettyBird I have a friend from Pollockshields. She had her wedding there just over 10 years ago. I was very impressed with the architecture there, very beautiful.

BlackMozart · 02/03/2018 14:54

rshard they are definitely good and if like me you can get 9 rather than 6 out of the mixture you can reduce the carbs per scone too. Result!

ASDismynormality · 02/03/2018 14:57

BerylStreep the protein rolls are from the fresh bakery in Lidl. Very good!

Rshard · 02/03/2018 14:58

Thanks blackmozart, I’ll try for 9 too. Did you shape them by hand or use a cutter like ordinary scones?

BlackMozart · 02/03/2018 14:59

Ok I am admitting to a guilty pleasure. Food Network channel superstar The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. She’s on now and I love her. I woudn’t probably make anything she cooks - it is usually pretty carby - nor buy the cookbooks but she’s such so nice to watch.
Settles down with a blanket and another coffee 😊

BrassicaBabe · 02/03/2018 15:03

Can someone remind of of the microwave baby bel snack thingy?

Rshard · 02/03/2018 15:05

I watched her loads when I was off sick. It’s like crack tv. She did actually do a low carb episode that was shown the other week. Featured cauliflower rice butvas that was what I was making when I cut/broke my hand (reason I was off sick), I had to switch over!

Apparently she and her husband are among the largest land owners in the US.

BlackMozart · 02/03/2018 15:05

rshard I use a cutter, the plain side, and a medium size so it looks about the size of a regular scone.

BlackMozart · 02/03/2018 15:09

Yes I did see a bit of the low carb episode you are right, but not the cauliflower rice recipe.
Yesterday when browsing her cookery books I bought on my kindle the story of how she met her husband and came to the ranch. Looking forward to reading that!
I find her somehow very peaceful to listen too. She always seemed so chilled, funny and real.

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 02/03/2018 15:12

ilove that's such a good mantra to live by! Pleased the baber was was lovely

Rshard · 02/03/2018 15:58

Thanks for the cutter reply blackmozart

Sounds an interesting read, enjoy

Black Mozart

Where did you find the cheese scone recipe?

ShagMeRiggins · 02/03/2018 16:25

ilovecherries have you considered scarves and knitwear caps to stave off the cold?

I googled ‘scarves hats’ and it auto-filled to ‘scarves hats for chemo patients’ (which you’re not), but many pretty things came up.

Not sure what your personal style is—these caught my eye.

Also this one. All would be great with your amazing eyebrows.

alma hang in there. Good for you for holding yourself accountable and being honest with us. Try to turn the day around—you’ll feel better for it.

It’s on the recipe thread but here’s a screenshot that I took plantlover

ilovecherries · 02/03/2018 17:04

Yes, these are nice, Shag. The problem is I think everyone sees them as ‘chemo’ caps which makes me leary about wearing them. To be honest, it’s my neck that is horrified by the sudden exposure! My hair hasn’t generated much scalp heat for months. Im wearing a big scarf now.

ilovecherries · 02/03/2018 17:05

The brown one looks as if it has built in ‘pouf’ though. That might be an option.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/03/2018 17:06

I like that brown one! I've just been out in my cossack hat which is similar, but not as nice.

BerylStreep · 02/03/2018 17:14

ASD thanks for the protein roll info. Did you happen to be standing in Lidl when you replied, or did you already have a photo of the rolls?

YoLoHogwomanay · 02/03/2018 17:24

those cheese scones sound lovely. I've been wary about making 'substitute carbs' up to now I'm hard-core me but these have piqued my interest.

maybe like others, it's the weather. I just want to snuggle by the fire with hot buttered toast/crumpets/insert carb of choice here. I won't of course but need to replace this mental image with a better one. perhaps a hot almond milk hot chocolate will hit the spot later.

What almond flour do people buy? so far I've just bought ground almonds in the supermarket but the packets are small.

YoLoHogwomanay · 02/03/2018 17:29

brassica take 1 full fat babybel. remove rind and break into 4 pieces. spread out on plate leaving enough room for them to expand. micro on full power for 2 mins. lever them off the plate with a knife whilst still warm and bendy or they will stick like concrete when cool. they go nice and crispy.

mrsglowglow · 02/03/2018 17:30

I'm afraid I fell off the low carb wagon Sad It started yesterday when having bolognese and I had no pasta substitute (my shopping delivery was delayed) so although I didn't have the spaghetti I did have a granary roll at 30g of carbs. Today my daughter made some gorgeous white bread and I just couldn't resist a big slice warm from the oven. I've also become a little addicted to pistachios until I saw how many calories are in a little bag! On the verge of a fuck it moment now and cracking open wine and crisps, but will keep busy making dinner and talk myself out of it. I blame the weather as just looking out the window is making me crave carbs!!!,

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/03/2018 17:31

I have had a hot lunch, instead of my usual dinner - roast chicken and bacon and FLGV - in front of the fire with a bit of new (and therefore v interesting) research to skim through. I have eaten more than I need and am still bursting, but very happy and soporifific. I suspect dinner will be a sliver of apple, a sliver of (forbidden) cheese, a couple of walnuts and a glass of red wine.
