Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The Big Stick is Back!

Morning all!

Many thanks to @prettybird and @BerylStreep for running this Bootcamp so well, so far. It's been a bit weird watching from the sidelines Grin

However, I'm back. Back in the UK, back at work and back on the wagon.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for this week

I've noticed that there's quite a bit of 'slippage' going on over the last week or so. I know that we're able to move on to Bootcamp Light now, but be very, very careful that this doesn't lead to too many carbs. And remember to keep the water and the fat up.

Good luck this week

Have just popped in to rave about roasted courgettes. I think I used too much olive oil (I really need to get a grip on how much oil I use; it's far too much even for this woe) but they satisfied my craving for greasy and salty.

I can now put to bed my craving for crisps and chips!

Rshard · 09/02/2018 15:37

NSV to report. So I ordered a top from Boden, in two sizes as I wasn’t sure but the smaller one fits me a treat! It felt tiny as I was putting it on but it fits! Does anyone look at themselves in smaller clothes, perhaps more fitted or in a brighter colour in a detached kind of way? Can’t just be me?

Rayna37 · 09/02/2018 15:57

Rshard love a bit of parkrun tourism. I did my 50th different course almost exactly this time last year, then it all came to a bit of a standstill, what with being pregnant Grin.
The quality of the cafe afterwards is crucial: got to be a proper breakfast, with eggs, not just bacon sandwiches or worse just cakes!

Rshard · 09/02/2018 16:19

50 different ones? That’s awesome rayna37. How far from home was the furthest?

Rayna37 · 09/02/2018 16:27

We did one on a gorgeous weekend away in Copenhagen, that would be the furthest, and two fabulous ones while on holiday in Ireland: Kilkenny and Bere Island. We mostly don't make stupid special journeys but just squeeze them in when visiting friends and family or on the way somewhere. Next new one will be one that's just started on the campus of my old uni, on a weekend away in March.

Rshard · 09/02/2018 16:36

Copenhagen?! Wow. I bet the one round your old uni will be lovely and nostalgic. I’ve not even been to my home parkrun recently, not even a run since I cut/broke my finger but planning on getting out tomorrow. I’m def going to try and find one near a gala soon, might be Corby though! Not quite Copenhagen!

Scabbersley · 09/02/2018 16:36

Quite pleased. Someone bought me a bottle of Johnny walker black label for Xmas and I've just googled whisky and carbs :

"Whiskey (and Scotch / Bourbon) Whiskey is made from fermented grain, usually combining rye, wheat, corn, or barley and comes in around 35 – 50% alcohol by volume. Even though it's a dark liquor, all whiskeys do not have any carbs (or sugars) added – making it a great drink for someone on a ketogenic diet"

In case anyone was thinking of hitting the hard stuff Smile

Scabbersley · 09/02/2018 16:37

0.1g per 100

Spiderkitty · 09/02/2018 17:57

Those roasted courgettes sound good SchrodingersFrilledLizard courgettes have gone on the shopping list!

I've really been enjoying meal planning (sad, I know). I like that I can make the same meal for all of us pretty much and just add wedges or a jacket potato for DH and DS (they don't like celeriac!!) and just dish up DS's before putting butter and salt on mine. So much easier that doing two different meals which I was doing on Slimming World.

B: Greek yoghurt and prawn mayo in a lettuce leaf wrap.
L: 2 boiled eggs, salad, mayo, cheese and big salad
D: Pulled pork done in the slow cooker with buttery celeriac mash, green salad and mayo
S: Greek yoghurt with a bit of cinnamon

Couldn't finish my dinner, which is unusual for me, but felt nicely full, so will be having the rest of the pork and celeriac for breakfast tomorrow!

CurlsLDN · 09/02/2018 18:46

Hello! Can I join?

I stumbled into a boot camp thread last Saturday and was so inspired I started on Sunday.

I started off weighing 16.6st, and am now weighing 15.12st. 8lbs off in a week!! Is that really possible?

Kleptronic · 09/02/2018 19:01

Sure is CurlsLDN but it will be mostly water. StuntNun knows the science properly, but as I understand it, the dropped carb intake means you have been using up glycogen store in your muscles and liver. Glycogen is stored by bonding it with 2 water molecules, so as it is used, water is released. A lot of water.

It'll settle down to about 1-2lb a week. That said, it does seem to be the more we have to lose, the quicker it comes off, for the first 2-3 weeks anyway. Then, it is not uncommon to stay the same for a couple of weeks, because we've become fat adapted. As in the body has now switched to using fat for fuel, insulin is low, blood sugars are steady, and then we start to feel much less hungry, and naturally eat less. As long as we keep up the low carb and high fat with plenty of green veg the natural calorie deficit results in weight loss, with no hunger.

Someone with a better way of explaining will be along shortly, I'm sure!

Welcome :)

BIWI · 09/02/2018 19:03

Welcome @CurlsLDN and well done! Yes it is absolutely possible. On one memorable Bootcamp we had someone lose 12lbs! Just don't go expecting that every week Grin

@TimeIHadANameChange - well done! I'm just about to start Week 5.

I did C25K back in 2013, and was really chuffed with myself when I managed to break the 30 minute barrier (I think my fastest was 29.33) but then started my current job and simply didn't have the time or the headspace to carry on with it.

But DH has been running for about two years now, and I can see the impact/affect it's had on his body/muscles, so I'm determined to get back into it and find a way to fit it into every day.

If only I enjoyed running ... Grin

B buttermint tea, bowl of chilli
L bowl of chilli
D avocado and spring onion salad with oily vinaigrette and basil leaves. With some slices of mortadella.
W 2 litres so far I would think.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 09/02/2018 19:14

biwi and time, I am so impressed with your running! I am trying to run every day in February (there is a thread in Exercise), but am very slow and stop a lot and generally only run for a mile in any case. But it is just about getting out there, so I am proud of myself for that.

BIWI · 09/02/2018 19:38

I'm not very fast at the moment - a definite plodder!

OP posts:
GuyMartinsSideburns · 09/02/2018 19:48

Plodding will always be better than standing still Grin I’m looking forward to getting back out too, I remember the first time I did 10 miles I was so chuffed, didn’t imagine I’d ever manage that. Smile I find the hardest bit is getting my kit on and my arse out the door!

BIWI · 09/02/2018 20:01

That's true! I was supposed to go yesterday morning, but it was too cold and I was too tired!

Flowers to those who have been through the mill.

NSV today is that I'm down another notch on my belt, and DH said I looked nice. Scale victory is that I saw 93.6kg again on the scale today, so that means it's real.

Food today:
B: coffee w almond milk & dash of cream. Ham cheese & tomato omelette.
L: nothing other than another coffee with AM&C
D: IPD Butter chicken with buttered spinach.

Currently having a seedlip with fizzy water and dash of diet tonic. Day 9 of dry Feb Smile

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 09/02/2018 20:49

Can I ask for any keto flu tips other than more fat and salt?

ilovecherries · 09/02/2018 21:28

Yuck, opened a pack of chicken thighs and they were off. In date till Sunday as well. Anyway, made a (huge) vat of sautéed Savoy cabbage, leeks, broccoli, spinach and courgettes (aka FLGV) with chillis garlic and lemon. Stirred through some grated cheese and baked in oven for 15 mins. Both absolutely stuffed, and it was delicious.

BumbleBeef30 · 09/02/2018 21:37

B mushrooms, egg, pint of fruit tea
L three spoonfuls of peas
D rib eye steak, celeriac chips and lettuce
W about 2 litres, trying to drink another three pints before bed

blackteaplease · 09/02/2018 21:39

Oh my in laws do not get this. DH explained to them in advance what I could eat. .In their defence they've been away all week and got a quickie tea but it was salmon en croute, breadcumb mushrooms, new potatoes and broccoli. DH ate all my carbs for me.
Luckily after a week here at Christmas I was expecting this so had an avocado and some cheese late afternoon.

Nan0second · 09/02/2018 21:58

Finally delurking to belatedly join boot camp please!

I’ve been following the rules along with the diet doctor advice.
I started 4 weeks ago on Monday and lost 3.8kg (and my second chin) in the first 3 weeks which is the fastest I have ever lost weight. Ideally I’d lose another 8kg but I’d be overjoyed to lose another 6kg.
I have so far been totally strict.
I do have polycystic ovaries so it is unsurprising that this woe is working so well for me.
Some wobbles with cravings when I’m tired or bored but I’ve managed to stay strong so far...

SoMuchToBits · 09/02/2018 22:22

BadlyParked, I would say plenty of water too. When I first started low carb I had a bit of a headache for a few days and lots of water helped with that.
