Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The Big Stick is Back!

BIWI · 05/02/2018 06:42

Morning all!

Many thanks to @prettybird and @BerylStreep for running this Bootcamp so well, so far. It's been a bit weird watching from the sidelines Grin

However, I'm back. Back in the UK, back at work and back on the wagon.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for this week

I've noticed that there's quite a bit of 'slippage' going on over the last week or so. I know that we're able to move on to Bootcamp Light now, but be very, very careful that this doesn't lead to too many carbs. And remember to keep the water and the fat up.

Good luck this week

Guy - for inspiration, go and have a read of the Les Parisiennes de Mamansnet threads in Style and Beauty. They're into the fourth thread but the first two in particular have some great advice. Even if all you do is get motivated to wear red lipstick! I never used to wear bright red lipstick, but after asking for advice, I am now the proud owner - because I'm worth it Grin - of a Dior 999 lipstick (my favourite) and a Chanel Coromandel lipstick. I sent ilovecherries over and she now has some Chanel Coromandel too Smile

You can also find advice on ways to update what you already have and how to work with your own body shape.

prettybird · 09/02/2018 12:27

titsbumsfannythelot - boiled eggs are good for breakfasts on the run. Some people make egg muffins, which can help up the veg intake. Or think continental and have some ham and cheese.

BIWI · 09/02/2018 12:30

Welcome @Rayna37!

@GuyMartinsSideburns - this jumped out at me:

I just haven’t done much by way of exercise due to feeling so bloody tired all the time

You said something similar yesterday, and so I say again - you're not eating enough!

B- coffee and milk, water
L- fancying cauli rice and something? Chorizo and onions?
D - no idea yet, dd wants to make soup after school, I think I'd like omelette and salad

This is all pretty low carb, but also low fat and low protein - and so low calorie and low energy! I know you've talked about finding it difficult to eat, but seriously you're not giving your body enough nutrition.

In terms of weight loss, it's not always good to keep everything low - the homeostasis mechanism means your body will be trying desperately to keep everything the same - you're not feeding it enough for it to switch to fat burning.

This, on top of the stress and cortisol is really a recipe for no weight loss.

I'm glad you've chucked out some clothes, as it means you won't have those 'hanging over you' - focus on the you that you are now, and buy lovely clothes for that!

Flowers

I'm not trying to harangue you although I know it must seem like it but just want to help Smile

That's ok Biwi, feel free to get your stick out if needs be Grin

You still don't think that for today would be enough? I've just had chorizo and cauli rice with onion and red peppers, pint of water. I'm stuffed. I'll have olive oil with the salad later, and could add some cheese too? I really don't know how to eat better because this honestly feels like enough, fullness-wise. I've got yogurt in the fridge, I could try and have some of that later?

I'm already feeling like I could use a nap Confused

Pretty - thanks il go and have a look! I already have most of the mac oranges and reds but there's always room for one more Grin

blackteaplease · 09/02/2018 12:43

I have just had a lovely lunch of buttered white cabbage with sausages and been pondering willpower whilst eating.

I think the key to sticking to something is enjoying it, not just tolerating it for an end gain. I have dallied with various forms of exercise over the years but never seem to stick at one for long as quite frankly I'd rather be sleeping. I have had insommnia for years but I have also had 8 years and counting of non-sleeping dc. However, I have rediscovered my love of dance and have been attending a weekly class for a year now.

Same with this diet, the food is delicious and as an aside I am losing weight (apart from the Christmas deviation). I can see that this is the future of my eating habits whereas any previous "diet" has been abandoned as soon as I hit the target.

Scabbersley · 09/02/2018 12:51

10000 steps before 12.30! Then a delicious lunch buttered sprouts and sausages with delouis mayo (I eat that mayo at every meal tbh)

ilovecherries · 09/02/2018 12:58

Oh Guy, please don't apologise. I suspect the feelings are always there, and it does them good to get an airing now and again. And you put into words what I often struggle to articulate. My DH is a lovely man, was devastated himself at the time, and kept everything else afloat while I lived at the hospital. But once it was over, for him it was over, whereas I was left feeling as if I had PTSD. Much better now, but the slightest mention of a sore throat or a bloated tummy from said DC has me almost in orbit with worry.

StuntNun · 09/02/2018 13:00

Beryl reduced alcohol tolerance is typical when you eat low carb, and also worse hangovers. There isn't any consensus as to exactly why. One idea is that the liver is too "busy" with gluconeogenesis to effectively process alcohol. Another is that the metabolism of alcohol uses some of the same enzymes as ketone production and the breakdown of fatty acids so the different pathways compete with each other. Yet another theory is that it's to do with the low amounts of glycogen stored in the liver meaning that the alcohol gets into your system much more quickly.

ilovecherries · 09/02/2018 13:00

On another note: M&S chicken pakoras!!! 2.2 gms of carb in a whole pack. Delicious with a FLGV and some homemade raita as a dressing.

Almahart · 09/02/2018 13:12

Ilovecherries one of mine was dangerously ill for years too and it was traumatising. I love your posts I find them very inspiring I admire you greatly

Right - breakfast was sausges and scrambled eggs, lumch smoked mackerel and celeriac remoulade, dinner will be something on the move as am going to the theatre tonight. Might get a naked burger from Leon. on 5th day of no booze and won't drink tonight. Am deterimined to make it to day 7. I did have a diet coke with lunch but can live with that. Next week is weightloss week - am going to really go for it

prettybird · 09/02/2018 13:15

Ooh - I love pakoras Grin - one of the joys of Scottish Indian restaurants Smile (Couldn't understand why you couldn't get them in Indian restaurants when I moved to England Confused). I'll need to look out for them Smile

prettybird · 09/02/2018 13:22

Meant to add that dh explained the difference in Indian restaurants to me: Scottish Asians (and therefore the restaurants) are mostly Punjabi, whereas the English Asians are mostly of Bengali origin.

There are obviously exceptions to that Smile

I love where I live in Glasgow, with a vibrant Asian community on my doorstep - and means I can buy spices, coconut flour and coconut oil easily and cheaply (bringing it back to HFLC relevance Wink)

titsbumfannythelot · 09/02/2018 13:51

Thanks @prettybird.

I think you must live fairly close to me!

ilovecherries · 09/02/2018 13:56

Alma. Sniff :). And thank you, that means a lot. (suspect we are all in danger of handing out group hugs, thereby sentencing ourselves to mumsnet jail till we can behave appropriately Grin)

ilovecherries · 09/02/2018 13:57

Yes, where we are living just now (Cumbria, so not THAT far south), it's impossible to get a curry as I know it. I miss proper Glasgow curries.

prettybird · 09/02/2018 14:01

I'm in Pollokshields titsbumsfannythelot Smile

I love it here even though I'm a Northsider by upbringing Smile dh claims that I'm not really a Glaswegian as I was brought up in Bearsden/Milngavie Hmm

abbey44 · 09/02/2018 14:19

@StuntNun, RangeRover - the statins...I'll keep taking them till my next blood tests in April and see what my cholesterol is then. I'm guessing that with my changed eating habits being better established by then, if they're making an underlying difference the numbers will have dropped by a noticeable amount. And then I'll have more justification for talking to the doctor about whether I need them.

Guy - after everything you've been through, you probably need to get used to just being kind to yourself and accept that little by little you will get there. If you feel you need to sleep a lot, it's probably your body telling you it needs some time to recharge and heal. I hit a particularly dark patch after my dad died unexpectedly as we were sitting talking, and for about a year or so it was as if I was blundering about in a fog. I thought I was fine, or should be, at the time, but looking back I really wasn't. There were days on end when I couldn't do anything and stayed in bed, I drank way too much and my eating habits went haywire. Lasagne and boxes of Maltesers were my staple diet, I think (not great for a diabetic... Blush ). For a long time it felt like I was never going to find my way out but, I don't know, little things started to fall into place among the rubbish, and though it's taken a long time to deal with everything, I think I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. I still have bad days occasionally, but they're not as bad, or last for as long, as they were, but I've learned to accept that it takes time. The support in here makes a huge difference when I don't feel up to it by myself - I hope it does for you too Flowers

TimeIhadaNameChange · 09/02/2018 14:33

Well I only went and blinking did it! Finish Week 9 of Couch 2 5 K, that is!!!!!!! I'm just a little bit chuffed with myself, as you might be able to tell!

Honestly, if you'd told me when I started it that not only would I complete all 9 weeks, with no repetitions, and would actually be running 5 km non-stop by the end I would have told you you were crazy! But I managed it. Ok, so it takes me just under 40 mins to run the complete distance, but I'm not bothered about that. And, the really strange this is, I love it! It's good for me mentally, and it's helped my tummy go down.

If anyone here is thinking about it, go and start it. It's good fun!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 09/02/2018 14:37

Rshard · 09/02/2018 14:37

Well done time, that’s fantastic! Parkrun next?

BrassicaBabe · 09/02/2018 14:43

Time bloody well done!!! Grin

TimeIhadaNameChange · 09/02/2018 14:54

Thank you!

Rshard - I've been thinking about a Parkrun. Unfortunately, the nearest one is about 100 miles away! However, we'll probably be in Glasgow at the end of the summer for a week, so I've already told DP I might disappear on the Saturday morning and head to the nearest one there. There's also a race in Inverness in September which I might enter. Originally thought about the 5K but am not thinking of doing the 10. Or even the half marathon. I think sense might return at some point, though!

Rshard · 09/02/2018 14:59

Ah that’s a shame time, keep checking though as there seems to be new ones all the time so there might be one a bit more local one day! Yes to bring a parkrun tourist! I did one in Weymouth when we were on holiday. Also gave a vague plan to seek ones local to dd’s swimming galas.

Appaloosajunction · 09/02/2018 15:13

Ilovecherries
Thanks for the M&S pakora tip
Though I may live to regret it! Grin

What a lovely bunch you all are on this thread.
