Morning all Flowers

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1W-L3Zo6bEtw-zwqIVGRzCfGSgX0ZUxlC3snVbEb-J-g/edit?usp=sharing Here's a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness ]]

If you haven't already, have a really good look around it - check out all the lovely stuff on the tabs at the bottom.

And here are the rules. Print these out and make sure you keep them handy:

1. Eat three meals a day
If you're not adapted to low carbing, then you must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, and it doesn’t have to be absolutely first thing, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry between meals. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack).

After the first two weeks of Bootcamp we will relax this, but these two weeks are critical in terms of helping you switch easily to a low carb way of eating - and if you start to feel hungry, it makes things much harder!

A typical high carbohydrate diet can mean that snacking is a routine part of your day. Once your blood sugar levels are stable, by eating low carb, you should find that you no longer want to snack. But the rule of thumb here is ‘if you are hungry, eat!’. (Just make sure you are only choosing low carb snacks, of course!)

2. Avoid processed foods.
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals - meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins bars.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat will not make you fat. Honestly! But it will keep your appetite satisfied, and it sustains your body’s energy requirements perfectly. Fat does not provoke an insulin spike, unlike carbs which do (a lot) and protein (a little). Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. Make sure that you focus on eating those vegetables that are 3-4g carb per 100g or less, and this will ensure that your carb counts are kept low. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

5. Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited)
Dairy can impede weight loss for some people. If you drink tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day.

There are a lot of carbs in milk, so if you are having several cups of tea/coffee per day, you will quickly rack up your daily carb count (e.g. 1 medium latte contains more than 12g carbs!) You may eat cheese but again, don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. I think Total Full Fat is the best, but other posters have also discovered a good one at Lidl.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it.

Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol
Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After the first two weeks of Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds
Whilst these make a very good low carb snack, and can be added back in after these first two weeks, they are very moreish and can quickly become very carby. Also, carb counts vary enormously. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest.

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners
Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

Finally, TKMaxx can be good (and cheap) for frocks.

singadream · 13/10/2017 14:16

Oh. 😭

What about the tinned tomatoes question?

NotAPuffin · 13/10/2017 14:30

Another pound off for me today : ) I'm lighter now than I've been for 15 years, though I'm bigger than I was then - I must have had a lot more muscle, even though my lifestyle was just as sedentary. Still, after losing over a stone and a half I'd expect to go down a clothes size fairly soon!

I just had a lovely salad box for lunch: leaves, broccoli, dressing, feta, chicken, pesto and a slice of emmental. I'm stuffed and it was delicious : ) And while it wasn't hugely fatty (it was quite light on dressing and pesto), I'll be making up for that later with a duck breast and some creamy mushrooms for dinner. Yum.

newbebe · 13/10/2017 14:35

Struggling, I checked the scales only lost 0.5 kilo since Monday, everyone seems to have lost more? I know I should wait!
Breakfast 2 xeggs scrambled
Lunch pork and veg homemade curry with green cabbage.
1 x coffee with milk
2 x tea with milk
Could murder a biscuit/ buttered toast.

Veryflummoxed · 13/10/2017 14:39

Singadream if it’s got milk in it’s likely to be carby. Tinned tomatoes use in moderation and check carb count on Tim.* They vary greatly.*

Veryflummoxed · 13/10/2017 14:41

Cross post and I just have no idea what is happening with my bold.

cafeaulaitpourvous · 13/10/2017 14:45

Egg and bacon things are breakfast muffins

Sorry for the more descriptive thing but I have a problem with words and I know what I want to say but I can’t find the right words ,, luckily I started with this after my degree finished last year!

HolgerDanske · 13/10/2017 14:48

Newbabe

I'm sorry you're struggling. Flowers

But really? Everyone else? I think only a few us have posted losses, so really there could be quite a few people who haven't lost much yet. I don't actually think I'll lose much at all this week, if anything. I've already had my initial whoosh a few weeks ago, and this week I'm on my period. I've also not drunk quite enough water. I am not going to worry about it. Honestly, it will happen for you.

Try to switch your thinking to Non Scale Victories. Focus on mindful eating, try to work through the cravings and ride them out. Do something else nice for yourself. And if you don't know what else to do for yourself to make yourself feel good, then maybe that is part of the issue?

Are you drinking enough? Because that's one of the most important things to make this WOE work.

Keep on keeping on. It will happen.

Almahart · 13/10/2017 15:01

Good day so far, breakfast hard boiled eggs with Boursin, olives and lettuce

Lunch pork escalopes with roasted garlic broccoli and cauliflower

thedayismine · 13/10/2017 15:03

Thanks BIWI I feel slightly better that it wasn't just a bad choice on my part - will look for bare naked version next time but they are mainly for DH who misses pasta and noodles etc - I am encouragingly not that fussed !
See pics for the product info.

Newbebe = half a kilo is over a pound which is great going in less than a week.

I started BC in May. It took me 4 months to lose a stone. Yet at the same time I went from a pair of size 12 jeans straining to do up (should really have bought a 14 but couldn't face it) to being at the point where size tens had to be held up with a belt.

As I said earlier in this (?) thread, go and take some selfies. Take some whole body ones, then some of your particularly wobbly parts. Then take some more in a month and compare. I can guarantee that if you stick to this woe you will notice a difference, regardless of what the scales say.

Veryflummoxed · 13/10/2017 15:06

Newbabe I agree with Holger when someone gets on the scales and sees a loss they post it.* A lot of people not loosing think “everyone else is loosing” and don’t post. Lots don’t weigh very often. As another wise person once said on here. “It didn’t take you four days to gain that weight, your not going to loose it in four days”. KOKO and the loss will come.*

NOMOREoatcakesandcheese · 13/10/2017 15:52

Hi everyone. I’m back from a few days in London seeing my niece. I’ll catch up tomorrow. Eating was fine although I wasn’t quite sure of the content of some meals like hidden sugar in salad dressing etc I tried v hard to stick LCHF

newbebe · 13/10/2017 16:26

Thank- you, I had a fruit of the forest tea, onwards and up- wards!
Meatballs and veg for tea.

prettybird · 13/10/2017 16:27

Half a kilo is fab less than 5 days in newbabe Smile That's two packs of butter (or lard Wink) that you are no longer carrying around inside your skin.

wombattoo · 13/10/2017 16:28

Ouais - you have friends here Smile. We will keep you company till DH gets home.

To those who are nervous of the approaching weekend, remember that strict bootcamp is only 2 weeks. Try and give yourselves the best chance by being strict for this 2 weeks. Can you plan some low carb treats so you don't feel you're missing out? Perhaps make the meatza as I am told it is as delicious as pizza.

On the last thread Stunt posted about some alcohol free gin (I think. Pour some sparkling water into a wine glass so it feels more special. (I will try and practice what I'm preaching Grin)

Sayrra It sounds as though you are enjoying the conference too much!

Well done to those who have seen a loss, for anyone else, remember that we are all starting from different places, weights etc. It is early days. If you stick with it, you will lose.

KOKO Thanks

SayrraT · 13/10/2017 16:57

Grin I am wombat and I've had an invite to spend a month in Spain to learn some new techniques so I'm very pleased.

I am drinking wine but I am actually not a drinker at home at all so when I'm at a conference then I will drink.

I reading but sorry for not replying to lots of questions, someone had a question about tinned tomatoes? What was it? Tinned tomatoes are ok, I think Sainsbury's are lowest carb. Especially if you are using them in a dish for several people.

OuaisMaisBon · 13/10/2017 17:05

Thanks, wombattoo, you are kind Grin I've asked the husband to take photos of his meals out (he's in his home town of Athens, on business but obviously will be out with friends (they're mine too!) quite a bit) so I don't regret not going with him, because I know there's no way I can low carb when we're staying in a hotel in Greece and eating out a lot!
I've been enjoying my flavoured water today and have drunk a lot more of it than I usually do of the ordinary stuff. I also made a celeriac gratin (may have overdone the cream there) which is meltingly delicious and is all I've had to eat this evening. I've now retired upstairs to avoid the wine in the fridge. And the chocolate.
Wishing everyone a good evening!

prettybird · 13/10/2017 17:34

You can low carb when eating out in Greece - I've managed it most of the time when I've been on holiday.

Plenty of Greek salad, tzatziki, wherever the aubergine dip is called, souvlaki, lamb steaks, steaks..... Smile

....and of course, Greek yoghurt Grin

CarbyDiem · 13/10/2017 17:39

Evening all. I am EXHAUSTED! My brain hurts. New job and too much for my poor tiny brain.

B. Egg muffin thing
L. Egg muffin thing, celery, avocado, spinach
D. Pork belly i think, with more salad.

I'd very much like a glass of wine.

GrumpyOldFucker · 13/10/2017 17:43

I’ll post my vindaloo sauce here just in case it’s not low carb enough (we had it the day before bootcamp started. It does also contain wine but all the alcohol will boil off.)

It does make a lot - certainly serves 4, 6 too if they’re not greedy and possibly 8.

Chillies are to our taste, i.e. a fuckton, but adjust as desired.

Vindaloo Sauce
★★★★★

  • Low carb, Indian, Sauces Prep 1 ∙ Cook 1 ∙ Makes 4 ∙ Difficulty Medium INGREDIENTS

2 packets Waitrose chicken stock(any stock obv, just so I know the ml. I think they’re 250 each?)
250 ml dry white wine
3 tablespoons vinegar
3 x large red onions (finely chopped)
5 garlic cloves (chopped)
5 Birdseye chillis (chopped)
¼ teasp cinnamon
1 teasp ground coriander
1 teasp ground cumin
1 teasp cayenne
1 teasp turmeric
1 teasp ground ginger
2 teasp mustard powder
2 tabsp garam masala
2 tabsp tomato puree

DIRECTIONS

Reduce the first 4 ingredients in a pan.

Gently fry the onions, garlic and chillis until very soft but not coloured.

Add all the dry spices and continue to gently fry.

Add in the tomato paste, fry a little more.

GrumpyOldFucker · 13/10/2017 17:45

Looks like the bottom of the instructions got missed off:

Stir the curry paste into the liquid and blend. (Super high speed blender on green smoothie mode is best, makes it really smooooth)

Simmer more if the sauce still needs reducing. When done, add salt and vinegar to taste.

Escapepeas · 13/10/2017 17:50

There is an alcohol-free, zero calorie, sugar-free gin substitute called Seedlip. It’s actually really nice. There are two flavours and it costs about £25 per bottle but you need a tiny amount then top up with ice and tonic.

Not many shops sell it yet but you can buy it for same day delivery on Amazon.

wombattoo · 13/10/2017 17:54

That's the one peas. I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called.

DrDiva · 13/10/2017 17:57

Are you lot all frequenting my local Waitrose? They had masses of pork scratching yesterday and today they have sold out!! Shock Grin
