Morning all! Have just had the week at hell at work, so not been around much. Food wise things have been going well for me - IF, aka skipping breakfast has definitely paid off. I haven't been weighing, but can tell from my clothes that everything is going in the right direction. My downfall has been too much booze though!

I started back on C25K last week, although things at work meant I was only able to do one run as opposed to three, but next week things are much better so I'll get back on that as well.

I have a tricky week from the food point of view, as I'm working every evening, and won't have access to facilities to re-heat left-over food, so I'm going to have to do some thinking about what kind of food I can take with me each day. I'm working in central London though, so hopefully there will be plenty of places hear by to buy something!

@FinallyHere

I just wanted to pick up on this comment:

I've been feeling virtuous at keeping low carb. and doing intermittent fasting, while serving myself ginormous portions of meat with a few veg

You're eating too much protein and not enough veg. Remember that our ratios are supposed to be fat:protein:carbs; that looks like you're doing protein:fat:carbs instead.

The reason you need to watch your protein is that it can also result in gluconeogenesis, which impedes weight loss. Read this, from healthline.com :

Protein is a very important macronutrient, which most people aren't getting enough of.

It can improve satiety and increase fat burning compared to other macronutrients (1).

Generally speaking, more protein should lead to weight loss and improved body composition.

However, low-carb dieters who eat a lot of lean animal foods can end up eating too much of it.

When you eat more protein than your body needs, some of the amino acids in the protein will be turned into glucose via a process called gluconeogenesis (2).

This can become a problem on very low-carb, ketogenic diets and prevent your body from going into full-blown ketosis.

According to Volek and Phinney, a "well-formulated" low-carb diet should be low-carb, high-fat and moderate protein.

A good range to aim for is 1.5 - 2.0 grams per kilogram of bodyweight, or 0.7 - 0.9 grams per pound.

ilovecherries · 01/10/2017 09:09

I didn't quite meet my SSS goal of being in the 12s. I saw 12.13.5 a couple of times last week, but not consistent enough to be real yet. However 13.3 is absolutely solid, which was a pound a week, so I'm fine with that. If I keep that up till the year end, I will be nudging the 11s by then. Given I saw 16 on Boxing Day last year, I'm ecstatic.

GammeldagBooks · 01/10/2017 09:23

*Why do you think that is, books? hmm

Not to pick on you, by the way, but there's so much falling off wagons lately, I feel we're in the pioneer days in America. Myself included.

What's going on, guys? Is this some sort of September curse or are we just making excuses and not doing the emotional work (let alone the culinary) that's required to change our lives and way of eating.*

That's ok clear. I think you hit the nail on the head with the "emotional work". I seem to have been unsettled and anxious since I went on holiday at the end of August.

Excuses for not eating well:

  • Stressed by work
  • Desperately trying to squeeze in phd study around work & childcare
  • DDs sleeping through not guaranteed so usually have around 6 hours broken sleep, constant feeling of exhaustion
  • DH has constant pain in abdomen that gp can't diagnose, waiting for referrals but it's making him miserable and depressed meanwhile
  • Hormones and periods very messed up, never sure if I will come on unexpectedly, never sure if I am having an anxiety episode or if it's 'just' bad pmt
  • My house is a permanent mess & I can't get on top of it
  • DP just bought a bungalow round the corner from us and they expect me to be housekeeper and gardener for them

I KNOW that eating badly isn't going to sort any of this out but I don't know how else to cope with feeling stressed & anxious, or rather I am not prepared to do the emotional work right now. It's hard.

I should add that I don't go crazy, I am very hard on myself so I get disappointed at the smallest slip. I am not exactly eating huge piles of mashed potato or anything, it's a square of DDs toast or a milk choc button or something. Just little mindlessly sneaked 'treats' which then give me indigestion or gas.

Tl;dr it isn't quite automatic to stick to the woe, my levels of stress/anxiety/tiredness have gone up recently and I don't have the mental energy to put into following the woe consistently

GammeldagBooks · 01/10/2017 09:29

Oh and I should add that the woe itself becomes an added stress. As in, I see that I am not losing consistently or I know I haven't been sticking to it as well as I should and then I get miserable about what a failure I am and then hey! Guess how I cope with feeling miserable about how fat and useless I am?? By eating!! Hurrah vicious circle! I still look very fat - I am still very fat despite losing a stone and a half I am still in morbidly obese BMI range so while it is nice to see some looseness in clothes etc I still feel a lot of self disgust when I look in the mirror

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 12:48

c4 glad today is finally #LolaDay. Along with going home and having Alfie cuddles. You must be ecstatic.

oldbooks i think one of the important things on this journey is to find alternative ways to relieve stress/reward/punish ourselves other than comfort eating or drinking.

On the other hand you could take steps to reduce the actual stress in your life. That has mostly been my approach.

FinallyHere · 01/10/2017 13:44

Morning all, and thank you BIWI message received and understood. Home from a walk and wolfing down a great bowl of veggies, with bacon bits.

BIWI · 01/10/2017 15:14

... with lots of fat, I hope? Wink

Llareggub · 01/10/2017 15:28

I had spinach fried in butter.. Omg it was SO nice.

lilydaisyrose · 01/10/2017 15:48

I need help (not judgement, just help).

I am 5w or so in & had lost 8lbs but have been sabotaging over the past few days. I allowed myself a day off, haven't found my mojo since and then that turned into eating a terrifying amount of crumpets yesterday & a load of dairy milk today.

I totally relate to this post:-

I am so incredibly annoyed with myself. I'm enjoying the food and the WOE. I enjoy cooking nice things for myself and not eating the beige food the rest of my family like. I seem to be on a sabotage mission and I hate it. I am determined to turn this around. I have been shopping today and my fridge is full of yummy LCHF foods and ingredients.

I am hoping that posting here (& not lurking) will help.

Thiswillbemyusername · 01/10/2017 15:57

I read the entire thread to make sure I am up to date when I make my first post and not one person read/replied to mine. Bloody charming :P

HippadoppaloppaGammeldag · 01/10/2017 16:21

Steady on this - discussion points were made and C4 has been on HDU, so I think she's entitled to be excited about coming home and getting her new dog.

Welcome to LCHF! The thread moves so fast that not all posts are remarked upon. I for one definitely saw your post earlier but I've not had a chance to reply on the thread until now.

Hope you are enjoying Lola C4

lily just made a conscious decision to go for it as of now. The longer you do it, the easier it is.

I made a delish lunch - crispy bacon, shredded chicken, mushrooms, shallots, spinach, kale, smoked paprika and garlic. All baked in the oven with a load of olive oil. There's some left for tomorrow as well, chuffed about that!

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 16:47

this hope you are not flouncing! Wink loads of my posts get ignored and I'm a regular. I just accept that nobody cares or loves me. Grin Wink

In relation to you this and lilydaisy you really can't "Just have a day off" on this WOE. It's all or nothing. Because your body needs to adapt to burning fat rather than sugar/starch and it can't easily just swap between the two on different days. You will pay for a day off (aka carbytwatness) not just on the scales this week but also because you come out of ketosis and chemical and physiological changes take place in your body which then take time to reverse. Also the bloating, water retention and feeling shiteness on top of weight gain. Its just not worth it. Others know the science behind this. I just keep it simple - stick to the BC rules and you will be fine. If you are going out or have a family occasion then just plan ahead and take food with you. That's what I do.

Has anyone been able to buy these? coffeeblocks.com/ they look good but only sell in the US?

ASDismynormality · 01/10/2017 16:48

this. Welcome to LCHF. At the moment this thread is mostly posted on by a small number of people and not always much about this woe. I think once the new bootcamp starts there will be lots of new people, people really focusing properly and it will feel more inclusive. Hope the party didn't set you off track.

lily. You can turn it around and will!

Sorry to hear so many suffer from stress, it is very a much a cycle of feel low so eat which in turn makes us feel low. Like yolo I have trying to take steps to reduce the stress from my life, a few minor adjustments have made a huge difference.

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 16:49

Oh and welcome newbies. Forgot to add that!

There is so much help and support here for you. And sometimes we will give your bottom a slap for being a carby twat. Which you should of course reciprocate as needed. Smile

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 16:51

Good to hear you have reduced some stress triggers ASD like i have. My main one was my cocklodger of a husband. Grin

ASDismynormality · 01/10/2017 16:59

Ha ha yolo mine is my inlaws, still see them but since total emotionally detaching I feel much better!

Never heard of the coffee blocks but I imagine it would be easy enough to make something similar at home that would last in the fridge for a few days. Wouldn't fancy adding in any yolk powder but the vanilla part sounds good!

ASDismynormality · 01/10/2017 17:03

Actually saying I have managed to reduce stress is true but today I made the decision of which secondary school I want my son to go to , he has special needs and I am going to have to fight the council to send him there so soon I will be very stressed!

Gammeldragz · 01/10/2017 17:27

ASD I hope you find your groove again with the WOE and reduce the stress.
c4/gammeldagfinder hope you got home okay and have managed Lola and Alfie cuddles!

I have initiated a friend into the WOE! We went shopping together and she was interested in my weight loss, I wasn't pushy at all. Just talked about it (last time I suggested it, it wasn't taken well, so I learned my lesson!). Got a message later in asking a few questions so I encouraged a bit more and she committed to giving it a go. I'm really pleased to be able to help her (especially as she has several health problems that will be greatly improved by weight loss) and share all the knowledge I've built up over the past 9 months.

Lunch - olives and feta
Dinner - pork chops, kale and a few carrots.

Start a new placement tomorrow on frailty ward and am rather nervous - first proper ward setting and back to 12.5 hour shifts (up at 5:30!). Will be making a packed lunch and coming home to DH's chili for dinner. Hate eating so late but can't be helped.

ASDismynormality · 01/10/2017 17:48

ragz. Good luck, hope all goes well.

BIWI · 01/10/2017 18:15

@Thiswillbemyusername

You are very, very welcome! These threads do move quickly though, so you will sometimes be missed.

It's really, never, honestly not deliberate.

HippadoppaloppaGammeldag · 01/10/2017 18:50

How did everyone who was doing Super Strict September get on? I did really well, so chuffed with myself for keeping it up! I'm going to keep on until the next bootcamp (not long to go, eep!)

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 18:55

Calling all Lchf experts - this thread needs you:

YoLoGammelZammoDag · 01/10/2017 19:10

ragz good luck. I really want chilli now

ilovecherries · 01/10/2017 19:13

Don't fret This. It moves fast, and we've been excited by random other things this weekend. I post here every day and posts frequently aren't replied to specifically, but the discussion encompasses them. I just assume when domeone says 'well done!' That they mean me (self centred) Grin

Lily, just start again and go for it. Keep making good choices. I'm not sure about other people, but I wouldn't risk 'treat days' yet. It's easier to just keep on without them. It's not that I'm super-virtuous, it's just easier. You CAN do it.

Hippa well done on SSS

And do we have Lola pictures yet?
