Week 6 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - we're racing on!

BIWI · 26/06/2017 07:26

Morning campers!

Here's the spreadsheet

Some good losses reported already this morning!

Four weeks left, so we could still see a good half stone disappear if we're vigilant.

The hot weather looks like it's disappearing this week, so hopefully anyone still struggling with water retention should find some relief.

But good luck to us all

Anybody else reading the Overweight Colleague - How should I help her? thread.
Apparently the woman eats cheese and shock horror mayonnaise and the 'poor woman' needs educating on how to eat healthily.

I'm having to sit on my hands. Grin

StuntNun · 29/06/2017 20:27

Congratulations Scooby. I had a low carb pregnancy with DS4 although it was carbier than it should have been until the nausea passed. I just kept eating in the style of Bootcamps Light but didn't worry too much about carbs in sausages, gravy, sauces etc. I definitely favour a large age gap over a small one Nasch but you don't always get much say in the process. I'm so blessed to have four children and one angel baby. Our gaps are 3.5 years, 6.5 years and 2.5 years and the 2.5 year gap is definitely the toughest one. DS1 was at nursery not long after DS2 arrived which made life easier. When DS3 arrived then DS2 was old enough to mind him for five minutes while I had a shower. But the small gap between DS3 and DS4 has meant a period where shitty sleep reigned followed by a terrible-twos/threenager combo that is lasting forever. All while DS1 and DS2 gaily enter puberty. It's pretty brutal in the StuntNun household at the moment!

styledilemma · 29/06/2017 20:30

Notso I saw that recipe and also thought maybe some flaxseed or coconut flour could work instead of cornflour.

ilovecherries · 29/06/2017 20:32

I'm having a lovely holiday. Our villa is gorgeous so we have stayed pretty close to base. I've jogging/staggering/fast walking at least 5K early every morning. About 6am!! I'm amazing myself! Spending hours in the pool, and using my dynabands every day because I just can't face doing Jillian Michaels on a tiled floor. I'm still doing 16:8, and I think my food has been absolutely on point - usually eating out for one meal a day, and cooking the other. No alcohol, and none of the usual holiday junk. And I'm having a great time, with no feeling of deprivation.

And bizarrely, I've had no mozzie bites this year (touch wood). I react very badly normally, and one year in Portugal ended up admitted to hospital for 24 hours on IV antibiotics because I got a nasty cellulitis in my leg. This year none, so fingers crossed it lasts - the others all have bites, so there are def mozzies around. I wonder if I smell different? I'm using industrial strength repellent, but I always go that, and it's never worked in the past.

styledilemma · 29/06/2017 20:37

ilovecherries I was wondering how you were getting on!
I'm on holiday as well. I'm not doing too badly food wise but have allowed myself a tipple or two every day, so not doing quite as well as you on that front!
I haven't snacked at all though, which I'm quite proud of and I have done a ton of walking and some swimming. So alll in all I have managed to keep from putting any weight on whilst still enjoying some good meals.
Interesting about the mosquito bites.

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 29/06/2017 20:47

Dd is 20 months, so what would that work out at, about a 2.5 year gap Grin oh dear.

We wanted to get the little kid years over and done with, I want to retrain at some point and I just can't see me ever having the energy with really young children so the plan is to just mooch along work wise till I can ship them off to school. Currently me and DP both work part time so we don't have to pay for any childcare, although we are thinking of sticking DD in preschool a few days a week when she's 2.

If we had loads of money I think we'd have loads of kids.

Naschkatze · 29/06/2017 21:03

Stunt I think you must be superwoman... Grin I look at people with toddlers and newborns and am in awe! And you had two older boys as well.

Oh Scooby.. just read you'll have a newborn and a toddler. It'll be fine! Looks easy! Confused

Style Well done for looking at the positives and enjoying your holiday without going completely off the rails!

How are the alcohol free BCers getting on? I haven't had a single drink WinkGrin

FinallyHere · 29/06/2017 21:15

ilovecherries Glad to hear you are enjoying your holiday.

I'm using industrial strength repellent, but I always go that, and it's never worked in the past.

I had exactly the same experience with mosquito bites, or rather absence thereof. That in itself would convince be about LCHF, if i needed convincing.

Notso · 29/06/2017 21:28

Style thanks I'll make those tomorrow and also well done on the holiday front.

Stunt your gaps are similar to our four, 4 years 4 months, 6years 6 months and then 16 months. They are now 17, almost 13, 6 and 5 and I feel we are out of the frying pan with the younger two and in to the fire with the older two.

PlymouthMaid1 · 29/06/2017 21:30

Ha ha I just had my Tesco delivery and the man couldn't believe that I was rejecting the substitutions ... Low fat Mayo (hiss) and chopped onions instead of the shallots ordered. Luckily the mozzarella for my first try at fathead pizza was there as well as the cream and seedy peanut butter.

MOIST · 29/06/2017 21:40

Namaste bitches. Evening all

Looooong day at work plus a placenta client to sort out this evening

B. Cream coffee
L (at 15.30!) stir fry veg withmarscapone
S. Olives, cheese, celery
D. Loads of beef burgers that need eating.

Must not mix up beef burgers and placenta.

SayrraT · 29/06/2017 21:40

I want to ask you all for advice. Not to do with weight but something else. I should probably start a new thread in another topic (and I might) but I feel better talking to people I know Grin

Anyway, I'm looking for some careers advice! Currently I'm 2 years into a 3 year post-doc, I don't think I want to do another post-doc but I don't know what I want to do either!

I got my PhD in 2016, it's in veterinary parasitology (I mostly have experience in molecular biology). I love working in the lab but I DO NOT want to become a group leader, I have no bright ideas so can't (don't want to) apply for my own funding.

I also like being outside, the part of my PhD (and post-doc) I enjoyed the most was going to farms to collect samples then processing those. I do also like writing but don't fancy being a scientific writer.

What careers do you all have and are there any you'd suggest might be good for/utilise the skills of a science PhD?

In an ideal world I'd be a research assistant but with the freedom to direct my own research (if I wanted to). Unfortunately most posts are advertised as one pay scale and responsibilities for an RA and another for a post-doc so not really possible to do that.

I live in Scotland within commuting distance of both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

MOIST · 29/06/2017 21:55

I cook placentae and dream of a PhD. Grin

Ana999 · 29/06/2017 21:55

Hi All - quick question. How many carbs per day are we aiming for in bootcamp? I read somewhere (can't remember where) that for a low carb diet you should not eat more than 20g carbs. Just wondered if this is correct? TIA.

Ana999 · 29/06/2017 22:02

SayrraT - Pharma? esp companies specialising in veterinary medication or farming?

Or environmental science/companies or organisations studying/preserving the environment?

NamelessEnsign · 29/06/2017 22:04

Sayrra I'm not very wise but I can tell you two things: don't automatically rule out being a leader; I swore I would never want to move into management but I'm now a director and love all the strategic decision making and big picture stuff Grin.

Also, the publishing industry is crying out for scientists rather than arts students so you could go a long way in academic publishing if it appealed to you at all 😀.

SayrraT · 29/06/2017 22:11

nameless I find it difficult organising my students so don't think I could cope with an actual group/team to manage Grin

ana on BC there is no carb limit, if you follow the rules you'll be fine. BIWI designed it to be easy with no counting required. I think I'll have to look at other options like your suggestions as well but I'm also wondering about what I could do that's totally different.

I have a qualification which allows me to artificially inseminate cows so I had a look for jobs today! I've also always fancied being a truck driver but can't afford to do my HGV licence (I'm saving though!) is anyone an HGV driver?

Ana999 · 29/06/2017 22:18

Sayrra - Not wanting to sound negative....what about the health aspects of sitting for hours driving. Bus drivers were found to have higher levels of cardiovascular disease in research done years ago. I'd imagine it would be the same for truck drivers....And you said you like being outside.

Ana999 · 29/06/2017 22:18

Sayrra thanks for the reply.

C4pinkwheels · 29/06/2017 22:40

Style would it be a mumsnet first for us to storm the other thread - to the tune of The Lunatics are Taking Over the Asylum of course.

I don't have the energy to reply and thank everyone individually for the good wishes, offers of help, food deliveries, offers to storm the GP surgery and ideas for dinner. It's awesome, you lot are awesome what the hell will we do when bootcamp finishes.

There were lots of comical moments today, there always are when I arrive on any ward, HDU view me as a set of dodgy lungs attached to a body - what they're not used to is dealing with a body as broken as mine and definitely not one that comes with so many bloody attachments, no nurse can ever get there head around the fact that I put my own indwelling catheter in at night and when I'm not well enough to do it DH or my PA will do it. So where I go there is a lot of kit that goes too, especially if I'm expecting to stay the night.
You are only allowed one small bag of toiletries in HDU and of course any special equipment that you need, it all fits into one case but that case is the size of a single bed.
The nurse that met me to do my admission today started by telling me I wouldn't be needing the case, so I asked her if she would take out my medical equipment and special dietary supplements, poor girl she pulls out day splints for legs, walking splints, night splints, resting arm splint, grip splint, function splint, night arm splint, bandage to go in night splint, catheters lots of catheters, night bags, indwelling catheters, pump for irrigation system, irrigation system, rectal catheters, barrier creams to prevent pressure sores, ventilator, eye drops, medication, more medication, cuddly toy, iPad, chargers and pork scratchings lots and lots of pork scratchings. I'm sure she was looking around for hidden cameras thinking she was being set up at one point.
The really funny bits were all about ketones, I wish I'd written them all down some of the best were:
Your body produces ketones when your internal organs begin to shut down - it's taking a long time to shut down because it's been six weeks already and I'm still here.
Ketones are a sign that you are overwhelmed with infection - um no they are not
You've got a UTI because you've put yourself into ketosis - no I've got a UTI because my bladder doesn't work.
If you're in ketosis for more than a few hours you will fit - WTF
Ketosis puts a strain on your heart - WTAF

the staff are fantastic, don't get me wrong but they work within such narrow specialisms that when someone comes along that crosses over loads of them it doesn't work at all and you have to be really proactive in your own care.

Giraffeski · 29/06/2017 22:59

c4 I think lots of HCPs confuse ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis (which is what it sounds like some of them were talking about)
One is a medial emergency, one isn't. You'd hope that doctors would know the difference Grin

Giraffeski · 29/06/2017 22:59

StuntNun · 29/06/2017 23:00

Ana Bootcamp is set up so you don't need to count carbs, just follow the rules. Most people lose weight easily enough on somewhere between 20-50g carbs per day.

Sayrra it may not be a long-term career plan with your qualifications but have you ever thought about coaching?

Notso in my experience children are a lot less intense work once they hit 5 years old. My boys are 14, 10, 4 and 2 at the moment. I don't think four children are four times the work of one child though. Going from one to two was pretty hard but after that it gets easier with each child. The 2-4 year stage seems to be the tricksiest; before and after threat isn't too bad. We have a few additional needs and that does make things more complicated. I have one with ADHD and ASD, one has dyslexia, at least two are gifted, and three have food allergies.

I'm bucking the Bootcamp trend by getting bitten more than ever before. It's not mozzies though but midgies and black flies.

C4pinkwheels · 29/06/2017 23:03

Sayrra I have no careers advice to give you other than don't rule anything out, I used to have my own business consultancy and I know that more and more companies who are forward thinking are employing people for their actual skills rather than for their qualifications. Weirdly inseminating cows sounds cool.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 29/06/2017 23:54

How are the alcohol free BCers getting on? I haven't had a single drink

Okay until tonight. And I'm the stupid one who proposed the whole idea of no alcohol!

Apologies. My husband and I are having a very, very difficult time in our relationship. We have been in counselling since last winter and I am also going to personal therapy sessions.

Tonight we discussed the possibility of separation, and we did so over a bottle of wine. I waited a long time to reach for the alcohol, but reach I did. Had no appetite, though and haven't had dinner. (Though had massive lunch and don't feel deprived at all, just no appetite).

Sorry all--I did think I could make it these last few weeks. And I can, starting tomorrow.

On a positive note, I've been photographing myself in the bathroom mirror and see a huge change in my body (if not weight) since March. I'll post pics as soon as I can but want to say to those who are feeling disappointed--keep doing this. Do it better than I do. Do it at your own pace.

Just. Do. It. (TM) Grin
