Week 3 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - we move on to Bootcamp Light!

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness once more

I hope that the scales reflect the efforts you've made over the last, strict apart from the cheating fortnight.

Now you have a choice. You can either move on to Bootcamp Light, which allows a bit of fruit (berries mainly), for you to include nuts/seeds - again, occasionally, and also a moderate amount of alcohol. Rules for Bootcamp Light are on the spreadsheet, but to make it even easier for you here they are:

1. Eat when you’re hungry - if you’re not hungry, don’t eat

In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you’re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don’t force yourself to eat. But don’t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food

Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs.

You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don’t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat

Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.
Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it – this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more – compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy

"You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn’t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you’ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this – but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day

Even if you’re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product – so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you’re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol

But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you’re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit

"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please – only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information – these are the carb counts:
Rhubarb – 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don’t forget you will need to sweeten this – and not with sugar!)
Blackberries – 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries – 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries – 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds

Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts – BUT – check the back of your packets as I don’t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Brazils 3.1g carbs per 100g
Walnuts 3.3g carbs per 100g
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Hazelnuts 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners

The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us – and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable – occasionally – to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

ilove, sorry but Grin. I read that thread and wondered if there would be any BCers who thought Elmlea was cream. What's the carb count? I know it's higher, but never mind, just stick with cream from now on.

CodLiverOil556 · 10/06/2017 20:22

3.9g per 100g is that high? Bloody hell, it's the only one that the NAAFI sells, I'll have to try and find cream in the German shops

CodLiverOil556 · 10/06/2017 20:24

Was going to attach a picture with my story post but got put off...then I thought bollocks to it so here it is, excuse the bra and pants Blush

AdalindSchade · 10/06/2017 20:24

It's not too high if you're only having a splash but if you have several coffees a day or add it to yoghurt then it's too much.

YoLoZammo · 10/06/2017 20:25

secretsignal same re photos. I've been a camera dodger for decades Blush

YoLoZammo · 10/06/2017 20:28

It's funny you talk about feeling like "me". I wonder if anyone else has the sense that they are in the wrong body? Inside I feel like me, but it's only when I catch sight of myself in a mirror or shop window that I don't recognise the image I see. That's not how I imagine I look in my head because I don't feel that way. Then I'm brought down to earth with what I actually look like/how others see me. Makes me feel ashamed that I've let myself get like this.Sad

YoLoZammo · 10/06/2017 20:30

Wow ilovekermit you look amazing!!

CaptainBraandPants · 10/06/2017 20:31

iLove that's about double the double cream I use, but as Adalind said, not too bad if just having a splash in coffee. Also, BLOODY HELL you are definitely doing something right because you look brilliant. I want a waist!

HemanOrSheRa · 10/06/2017 20:32

Wow Kermit you look fabulous!

CodLiverOil556 · 10/06/2017 20:35

The first photo was taken in Jan 14, second taken second week of boot camp. I'm about 3lb light and will take another at the end of BC.

It's been a hard slog and I was ready to give it up with all the low fat crap, I have a feeling the last stone is going to be easier but I'm mad at myself about the cream.

RedBeanie · 10/06/2017 20:37

Kermit wow! You look great!

YoLo I know that feeling - I see my reflection walking past shops these days and can't believe how big the bum is. But it's not really me, it must be the way the glass is, surely I don't look that big? I'm facing up to reality now, hence this WOE.

Asmoto · 10/06/2017 20:42

Your photos are really inspiring, Kermit.

GoodBadOrIndifferent · 10/06/2017 20:44

kermit amazing photos, thank you for sharing!

styledilemma · 10/06/2017 20:48

Kermit you look great!
You can definitely see the difference. I wish I had your waist!

OldBooks · 10/06/2017 21:05

Kermit you look amazing!

YoLo my problem is that 'me' is fat, have been since I was 10 years old. I don't know another me which frightens me. Even when I have lost weight before I wasn't skinny, never really got below a tight size 14.

I do have pictures of me with the DC, but I dislike them. DH took a photo earlier today of me and DD1 reading together and sent it to our family What's App group. I was upset and said how could he send a picture of me looking so disgusting. He was confused, he just saw a lovely scene of his wife and daughter sharing a moment that he wanted to capture.

WaaWaaWaaa · 10/06/2017 21:49

I'm the same Oldbooks. Me IS fat. I was 9lbs 13 when born and I've never looked back. There's never been a time where I've been a normal weight ever.

Kermit those pics are Amazing! I had a bra fitting today and was stood there in my bra and trousers with these mirrors all round and I was so disgusted I took pics. My back fat is practically wings 😥.

Anyways. I'm here now and doing well. I'm very inspired by you all. I have arthritis and Im very much hoping this improves as I just started on injectable medication this week.

Really fancied a vino tonight but didn't. One more week till holiday.

KOKO and I'll see you guys tomorrow!

Veryflummoxed · 10/06/2017 21:52

I love manchego cheese waa it's a fairly recent discovery for me. And Boots that weigh a stone. How do you walk in them?
kermit that is impressive.
oldbooks Flowersand jiminny Flowers
All those fabulous stories, so inspiring.

Lunch today was left over pork and veg

Dinner was a lc burger with melted Stilton a mega big mixed salad and hm coleslaw. Dh couldn't get any white cabbage for the coleslaw so used red. The result was interestingly pink but tasted delicious.

Between lunch and dinner (which was late) I ate a small meal of some left over veg.

Water, tea. Herb tea.

secretsignal · 10/06/2017 21:53

YoLo please don't feel ashamed, it's become so clear to me from this thread that everyone has their own complex reasons for food and weight becoming an issue, the big change I've found most helpful is realising I'm a comfort eater (hadn't admitted it to myself before) because sometimes I need comforting!! We're only human after all. But this plan seems to take away the cravings for sugar and stodge, hence feeling more in control. As others have said, onwards and downwards. And maybe I'll let DH take some photos this summer Wink

Mandelinka · 10/06/2017 22:09

Thanks to everybody for sharing your stories! Very inspirational.
I was a chubby kid, more of a puppy fat than o/weight, because I come from quite sporty family, my parents often commented on how round my face or how jiggly my butt was. I am still conscious of the shape of my face ( luckily I have cheekbones so my face has some angles to it)
I lost weight when I become teenager and stayed quite slim, size 10-12. When I got pregnant in my late 30's, I gained over 4 stones. I lost most off it but some of it crept back again. I love sweet things and used to binge on my days off than I would be very disciplined and eat well when at work.
I've tried 2:5 and absolutely hated it.
I was really unhappy with my body shape, none of my clothes fitted and my work uniform was bursting in seems. As I am insulin resistant and have mild PCOS, my sugar and carb binges were making me unwell and fat. Also I've noticed I would have horrendous mood swings after eating sugar
And than one day, I spotted the BC thread...

Bibs2014 · 10/06/2017 22:25

You look great, Kermit!

I went for a half hour run in this heat! Sooooo hot but glad I did it.

Swapped dinner from chilli con carne to burger, halloumi and salad ☺️

secretsignal · 10/06/2017 22:30

B: cold leftover pork belly
L: smoked mackerel salad
D: pan fried chicken, green salad, cheese, avocado and mayo

3 almond teas, 1 black coffee, 1 creamy coffee. Rubbish water, less than 2l.

WaaWaaWaaa · 10/06/2017 22:36

Lol flummoxed! 😂. Of course I meant Boots the Chemist! Although boots that weighed half a stone each would be an interesting excercise technique! 😀😁😀😁😀

Giraffeski · 10/06/2017 22:43

Ive been a carby twat this week. Have fallen headfirst into the biscuit tin and also a LARGE piece of flapjack.
I suspect its stress/boredom as DH is away all week and Ive been dealing with the sale of our house, plus trying to buy another one . WHY is it so fucking hard to buy a house, I've had estate agents generally being rude, dismissive and passing on (full asking price) offers to the vendors...
Add that to two of the dc having slapped cheek and the youngest deciding to spontaneously potty train...
Anyway, you can see the picture.
I need to deal with my emotional/stressed/bored eating impulses though, otherwise this will never stop.
I'm annoyed with myself because I thought being on holiday would be the issue but it really wasn't!
So get your big stick out BIWI, I'm ready. I suppose my punishment is having to go through carb withdrawal again.
BUT I think I've made a step forwards- previously I would have thought 'fuck it' and given up, but I can recognise how much better I feel on this WOE so I'm picking myself up again, and starting again on a strict BC.

ilovecherries · 10/06/2017 22:49

Pretty knackered today, loved reading everyone's stories, might do mine tomorrow. Today's food:
B: nothing
L: scrambled eggs (with cream) smoked salmon and buttered spinach
D: we were out with friends, but I was very restrained. No starter, then plain tandoori chicken - Asked for raita instead of sauce gave my rice and naan to other people. (I'd asked them to hold those, but they appeared at the table anyway) Drank a litre of sparkling water with it - asked for a wine glass rather than a tumbler, and then was a bit horrified by how few wine glasses there are in a litre (oops at previous wine consumption). Realised that often my notion for Indian food is really about the spices and flavours, and I don't actually need to stuff myself with rices and breads as well. Feel pleasantly full but not stuffed.

YoLoZammo · 10/06/2017 23:09

giraffeski KOKO it'll all work out in the end!

Thank you secretsignal Smile
