Evening all!

I'm starting this thread now as I have to leave early for work tomorrow. and I know how keen you'll all be to weigh-in first thing, so won't want to wait until I can get round to getting it up and running Grin

Here's the link to the lovely shiny new Spreadsheet of Fabulousness ]] for which many thanks, SayrraT.

Your name should be on it, but if it isn't, just add it at the bottom. Don't try and re-alphabetise the list - Sayrra or Wombattoo will do that later.

And don't touch the blue cells!!!

Definitely finding it easier to drink - have already polished off my 2 litre jug of water.

Lunch has been boiled eggs, ham and mayo with a couple of Serrano ham/manchego cheese "rollitos" from M&S and 1/2 pack of chorizo crisps. I am such a sheep Grin

I'm very interested in the Keys v Yudkin debate. I had read both but had not really translated Yudkin into the sensible advice we get here on bootcamp.

I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but it makes sense to me that given the choice between 'eat non-processed’ food, reasonably sparingly' and plugging low fat (high sugar) products that aren't as filling and satisfying and you get hungry quicker and end up snacking more , if i were a food manufacturer, rather than a food producer, I would see the attraction of a 'food' which make people want to eat more. Just like the 'soft drinks' with added sugar (and sweeteners) , which don't quench thirst the way water does and instead, make you want another one. Sigh. It was obviously in their interest get the low fat high carb message out very widely, so people thought they were eating healthily.

Feel foolish for being had, soooo glad to have found bootcamp and this lively community. Thanks, all.

Sadly, I suspect my GP isn't one of the enlightened ones :(. About a year ago I was in there actually crying about my constant weight gain. I begged him to look at my low fat food diary. He refused and said 'it's simply about energy in and energy out. If you are only eating two sticks of celery a day, and you gain weight, it means you are eating one stick too many. It's a simple equation and anything else is an excuse'. And then he referred me to the fat clinic where the nurse talks constantly about whether I've 'been good or naughty this week'.

CaptainBraandPants · 23/05/2017 14:33

ilove Flowers When you have lost a shed load of weight, go back to see the GP and the nurse at fat clinic tell them about all the delicious "naughty" food you have eaten and lost weight.
Seriously, ignore, stay on here for support and consider changing GP, if possible. Honestly, there are enlightened medics about. I'm one

dustmotesinthesun · 23/05/2017 14:46

Stunt i need to read up on resistant starch. I only know some people eat cold cooked potatoes to get it. Interested in prebiotics too.

dustmotesinthesun · 23/05/2017 14:47

And yes Ilove you show him! He'll be dazzled in 10 weeks time. He sounds like a dinosaur

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 23/05/2017 14:50

Damn you lack of paragraphs.

notevenamum1 · 23/05/2017 14:55

I have been feeling pretty shit since starting this (yes, only yesterday!) yesterday I felt hungover despite not having drank for 2 weeks, I felt so very tired and had an unquenchable thirst even after 3l of water! Slept 9 hours last night and still woke up feeling really really tired. Had a quick Google and it looked like carb flu is a thing. It seems to be withdrawal symptoms!! This afternoon I dragged myself to an express spin class. I really really didn't want to but I'm so glad I did because I feel a million times better now. Hope this might inspire others to do short exercise session and hopefully feel better xx

ShastaBeast · 23/05/2017 15:02

I was told to try a Mediterranean diet by the GP. When I asked if that meant high fat low carb she said no, low fat! Olives, oily fish, cheese, fatty meats and full fat yoghurt is what I view as Mediterranean. Maybe with some pasta thrown in.

MaryThorne · 23/05/2017 15:22

@notevenamum1 it absolutely is a thing. This is really useful (as is most stuff on the Diet Doctor's website): www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects#inductionflu

Plenty of salt and fat is key. I've mostly remembered to have enough salt but I was starting to get a headache this afternoon and, after a glass of water with half a teaspoon of salt in, it's already easing off. It sounds gross but it really does work and isn't actually that bad!

HemanOrSheRa · 23/05/2017 15:28

Well I am waiting for the overwhelming afternoon exhaustion which usually hits me as soon as I get in from work just after 2pm. It's not happened yet. This is the first afternoon for a very long time that I haven't had to have a lie down and a nap before DS gets in from school.

GetReady · 23/05/2017 15:54

Has anyone tried fat bombs for breakfast? I haven't, but am liking the idea! (Not sure they're boot camp friendly?)

Just been reading Wired to Eat and they have three recipes; (see pics!)

Opinions??

BIWI · 23/05/2017 15:54

@notevenamum1 Of course it's a thing! Why do you think I/we write about it on here? Hmm

Sugar (aka carbs) is a highly addictive substance, and when you cut it down/out, you're withdrawing from it, like any other addictive substance.

(And also, fyi/others information, if you're giving up caffeine you're likely also to experience withdrawal symptoms)

It's only short-lived though, and should only last for about 3 days

Don't give up if you're experiencing it!

Cherrypi · 23/05/2017 16:01

I really want a biscuit. I thought we had pork scratching but we don't.

GetReady · 23/05/2017 16:01

BIWI? Do you 'do' fat bombs?

HemanOrSheRa · 23/05/2017 16:09

Don't crack Cherry. Have you got anything crunchy at all? Celery or cucumber even? I just had a nose in the fridge and ate some olives (and pork scratchings, sorry). I don't know why. I'm not even hungry Confused.

StuntNun · 23/05/2017 16:10

GetReady I wouldn't advise fat bombs at this point. They can have a place at weight maintenance and they can be a good low carb treat. BUT you shouldn't need to be eating practically pure fat foods at this point - you want to be burning your body fat too, whereas at maintenance you want to maintain your level of body fat so you need a larger proportion of your calories as fat. One problem with fat bombs is that they displace more nutritious foods, you should be eating plenty of vegetables. A bigger problem is hat fat bombs are easy to overeat. You'll hear of people making a batch and putting them in the freezer to avoid eating the lot in one go.

Finally, Yudkin wasn't LCHF but he warned about the perils of sugar way back in the 60s and 70s and that's when sugar consumption was massively lower than now. The thing I like about his book is that he makes it absolutely clear what is based on experimental evidence in humans, what is based on animal experiments and what is conjecture. So you know exactly how much weight to give to each of his arguments. The amazing thing is that he was pretty much right about everything... and he was hounded out of the scientific community for insisting that sugar was bad.

JiminnyCricket · 23/05/2017 16:11

GetReady the whole point of bootcamp is eating proper food, which fat bombs aren't.

Although technically fine, you'll find them unsatisfying and worse, moreish!

dementedma · 23/05/2017 16:11

hungrrrrrrrry!
And now have to go to a meeting where there will be sandwiches and wraps and the like.
grrr!

Cherrypi · 23/05/2017 16:11

I have cucumber and celery being delivered sometime before 5. I had some more cheese. I've had loads of cheese today.

HemanOrSheRa · 23/05/2017 16:17

Could you make some cheese crackers? They don't take long. It's just small mounds of grated cheese baked until golden. They cool and go crunchy. BIWI posted the recipe here. It is the second post on the thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/low_carb_bootcamp/1447493-Bootcamp-Recipe-Thread

ASDismynormality · 23/05/2017 16:21

ilovecherries. I've just finished an NHS funded course for pre-diabetics. The advice was to ignore current government healthy eating advice and eat a LCHF diet. I also saw a gastroenterologist last week and told her I was eating LCHF and she told me to keep going.

Worship. Sadly I'm not surprised. I'm sure there are higher levels of depression in parents with SEN children and I read there are also higher divorce rates!

The name Yudkin looked familiar so I had a quick google. I used to work in Prof John Yudkins diabetic clinic pre children. By the looks of it he was the authors son. A very tenuous claim to fame!

ASDismynormality · 23/05/2017 16:22

dementedma. Pick the nice low carb fillings out to eat.

styledilemma · 23/05/2017 16:24

notevenamum, you're braver than me going to spin today!
I too started yesterday and I cancelled my spin class for today as I was worried I wouldn't have the energy levels to keep up.
Maybe I shouldn't have cancelled? Hmm

styledilemma · 23/05/2017 16:44

Does anyone know if Dioralyte is suitable to use as an electrolyte supplement? Thanks.
