Week 1 Early Spring Low Carb Bootcamp - at last!

Evening all!

Just getting this out there, so that everyone knows where to go/what to do in the morning.

Here's the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I'd like to say a massive thank you and Flowers to Sayrra and Wombattoo who set this up and maintain it for us all.

PLEASE don't touch anything other than the cell where you input your weight.

If your name isn't on the list, just add it to the bottom, and it will be magically re-alphabetised to include you.

It's called the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness because of all the information and resources that are available to us. Look at the tabs at the bottom - the rules are there, along with the veg counter, and all manner of resources for you to read up more about low carbing.

If you can't access it, or can't input your weight, just add your weight to the chat thread, and someone will do it for you. (I believe it's difficult to do it from your phone).

But more than anything else, a massive good luck to you all!

All I can say to you is follow the rules!

It does work, but only if you follow them.

Good luck everyone.

Anyone else here with depression? I've had it for years and usually just fine managed with meds. But doing the boot camp this week I have gone on a massive low. Then when I thought about it I think I had the same last time I did low carb....

Wondering about a link?

BIWI - am trying to get back on it today but feeling not going to last

dementedma · 11/02/2017 13:22

Interesting snow . I came off Citalopram a few weeks ago and I was ok if irritable. I'm finding myself getting more down as this week goes on. I think Low carb( BC lite) is going to be better than no carb for me. Finding it very difficult.

Hesdeadjim · 11/02/2017 13:26

Aye I'm fine guys :) I was a bit put out at the time but when I looked at what they were buying it was 90% low fat sugar packed yogurts, huge amounts of fruit and weight watchers ready meals, so I had a little 'woohoo' moment when I realised that's not me anymore, and for lunch I'm about to dive into egg cups made with proper streaky bacon and FULL FAT CHEDDAR!! I cannot tell you how much I've missed proper cheese!

Steak and a mushroom cream sauce for dinner as well, haven't eating this well EVER.

I'm only on day 2 so I'm feeling pretty good, bit worried though that carb flu is going to hit me smack bang in the middle of the week next week when I'm working Sad, but there's nothing I can do about that and if it gets me to a healthy weight it's worth it long term.

jenisnotmyrealname · 11/02/2017 13:33

demented what is BC lite - not heard of that? For me being well mentally has to be higher priority than being the weight I would like to be

Hesdeadjim · 11/02/2017 13:42

Are lentils allowed? Can't find them on the spreadsheet. TIA

mrwalkensir · 11/02/2017 13:57

Lexa47 and Hesdeadjim I just made some muffins as the oven was on for the celeriac Grin . May have been better without the paper cases as they probably made it more leaky and less crispy, but still v tasty ( chucked a bit of spinach in) . Gobsmacked st how rude those people were!

Jen that's probably not what it's really called, bit when the first two weeks of BootCamp are over, we can have a bit more stuff like fruit, honey, nuts etc. It's less restrictive so more doable.

BursarsFrogs · 11/02/2017 14:02

Lunch out was lovely, and grilled halloumi and avocado salad with lots of parmesan and a caesar dressing was lush.

snowdonstreet Sorry you're feeling very down. Flowers There's definitely a link between carbs and moods, I'm sure, but I think it's probably not straigthforward or the same for everyone. I've known of a couple of people with bipolar disorder who found they couldn't keep their carbs too low, as the extra energy pushed them towards mania. I have various MH issues, occasionally depressive, but I think I personally feel better when I'm eating low carb. Then again that's probably because I feel more in control of my eating, which always affects my mood.

SayrraT · 11/02/2017 14:08

demented BC isn't (shouldn't be) "no carb" you should be getting carbs from your veg.

jen BClite comes after the first two weeks of BC. Have you read the rules? It's all explained there.

You can relax a little there and introduce some fruit and nuts (not honey though!).

pk78 no lentils, have you looked at the carb count?!

CaptainBraandPants · 11/02/2017 14:09

Jen as *demented said, it is the less restrictive version of BC. After two weeks, you can choose to stay with BC, or go to BC lite - or do a combination of both. E.g, I try to just do BC lite at the weekend.
You are allowed nuts, berries, alcohol - all in moderation. It allows things like almond flour, which makes more interesting recipes doable. Not sure you are allowed honey though! Grin
Hesdead glad you aren't disheartened by the comments. You are absolutely right about the crap they had in there basket as well. Your egg thingies look lovely, as do mrswalkens

Imissmy0ldusername · 11/02/2017 14:27

Feeling a bit meh and bleh today. No idea why! Probably not entirely helped by volunteering to make some peanut butter cups for DH's long shift at work tomorrow. I made a nice enough version of a pie my mum used to make - it involves egg (I may be getting a little bored of egg!), butter, cream, seafood & cheese. I popped some asparagus, mushrooms & broccoli in, for balance. Suspect I need more veg with the next few meals.

Hey ho, I'm off to visit a National Trust property with DM tomorrow - I'll be taking a picnic to have on the train. It'll be nice to get out & about - I've only been to work & back the last week or so.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/02/2017 14:47

Can I ask a question even if I'm not 'officially' boot camping? Smile

I'm wanting to maintain the weight I'm at (lost just under a stone low carbing) so how many carbs do you reckon is ok now? I started last September by cutting back to

BIWI · 11/02/2017 17:22

Hi @MrsJBaptiste the amount of carbs you can tolerate varies from person to person, so you're going to have to do a bit of experimenting.

Dr Briffa says that a low carb diet is 100g carbs or under per day; he also suggests that each meal should aim to be no more than 30g carbs.

If you were following the Atkins diet (properly - most people don't!), when you reach your desired weight, you increase your carbs every day by 5g (I think it's every day, sorry can't remember - it's a long time since I read the book) until you reach a point where you start to gain weight again. But that does mean that you have to make sure you're weighing/counting your carbs every day, which you may not want to do.

Sorry that there's no easy answer here!

Whoops. I'm having a glass of red wine! In my defence, this is really my week 4 although I had planned to follow boot camp for another couple of weeks before going lite. I shall just have the one.

snowdon street I have depression (on fluoxetine) although I have been pretty good since before Christmas. I think starting amitriptyline for fibromyalgia gave me a little boost. I find this WOE helps me but I have also stopped eating anything containing gluten as it doesn't agree with me. I'm feeling really good atm. Your mental health is most important.

Blubberfull · 11/02/2017 18:04

Last night was a big event with a tasting menu and accompanying wines, I knew this was coming and for the first time instead of sabotaging the whole day I was good until dinner. Today however I have succumbed to carbs and think my week will be a write off. Cross with myself but trying to not get into a mindset that I have to restart on Monday. Help me ladies see that it will be better to start on the wagon again tomorrow instead!

Lucy7400 · 11/02/2017 18:10

I have been snacking alot today. I am so hungry which I put down to having soup at lunch. I dont think its all bad:

B scrambeled egg
L carrot and coriander soup , 2 babybels and a bowl of greek yogurt
Snacks 2 more babybels, olives, red pepper , celery and some chedddar.

Dinner is nearly ready, chicken cooked with olives, onion, pepper and pesto with kale fried in butter.

I bought Sweet rhubarb tea as recommended by someone here. It is delicious. I have also been checking out recipes in theth Diet Doctor. They look.hrray so will be giving them a go next week.

BIWI · 11/02/2017 18:13

@blubberfull Today however I have succumbed to carbs and think my week will be a write off.

Why write the whole week off? If you get back on the wagon straight away, drink plenty of water, keep your carbs super low and - if you can - do some/up your exercise, you should be OK. But don't make an excuse of it! We all have times when - for whatever reason - we can't avoid a high carb meal. But you have to be super vigilant to not let that lead to a carb fest.

If this is wrong, I don't want to be right Grin

Flat iron steak with a cream and mushroom sauce:

Butter in a pan, throw in 3 cloves of garlic and cook until butter browns off. Throw in your steak and let it do it's thing depending how rare you like your steak. When done, take steak out of the pan to rest, then chuck in 50ml double cream, a teaspoon of whole grain mustard and a couple of handfuls of spinach.

Took 10 minutes start to finish and I'm in heaven! Grin

Hesdeadjim that looks and sounds gorgeous! (Feel smug that supermarket twats are eating shitty WW ready meals!)

Today was good though a bit low on veg, breakfast was boiled eggs, bacon and mayo. Lunch was two frunkfurters with mustard, dinner was chicken tikka with broccoli rice. Am down 2l of water and about 1.5l of black coffee (which I am pretty sure my body thinks is water). Carbs at

Hesdeadjim · 11/02/2017 19:08

ragz134 I just finished eating it, it was better than sex Grin

DP just finished it, then about 2 minutes later said '.... oh yeah! There weren't any potatoes!' Hmm he knows that I'm on a new diet and it's low carb and his only objection to coming on it with me was 'I'll be hungry without potatoes with my meal'... he's currently complaining how full he is!

I've got a niggling headache and I'm pretty tired this evening, so I'm settling down with the dogs to watch ninja warrior, extremely satisfied and I have that contented, 'yum' feeling that you get after an awesome meal :)

Weirdly, I crave takeaway (pizza) like mental when I'm on weight watchers and crisps and anything full of fat but even after I've eaten it I don't feel happier. I just ate that steak and i loved it, but the very first thing i thought when I put it in my mouth was 'oh god, this is really bad' even though in my head I KNOW it's what I'm supposed to be eating! It's as if I've been on a diet for so long, I assume all food that I enjoy is bad for me and makes me feel this inate sense of guilt. What on earth is that about??

Musicianofbremen · 11/02/2017 19:09

I'm really getting into this now and the scales are finally on my side.

B: scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
L: ball of mozzarella with tomatoes, olives and salad leaves
D: duck breast with stir fried tenderstem broccoli, mange tout and spinach

dementedma · 11/02/2017 19:33

Steak with a mushroom, onion and cream sauce for dinner, with broccoli.
