Starting today - low carb

Right it's time to get back in the low carb saddle. I basically follow boot camp rules. That works very well for me. I find getting into ketosis hard so making my public declaration of intent here. Planning to weigh and measure shortly.

So I'm starting today. Whingeing about carb flu all the way. Join me

Bookmarking - I'd like to join in. Have been low carving over a week and gained a pound so have been a bit depressed by the result. Still, I haven't given up...am plugging a head, I know I need to give it time. I certainly already feel more energetic, better within myself.

ClopySow · 12/01/2017 06:29

I just stepped on the scales and am 2lb up from yesterday.

Must stay away from scales.

Aderyn2016 · 12/01/2017 08:00

Chester, after I posted yesterday I had a bowl of strawberries with low carb soya yoghurt, so I did eat a bit more.

I'm not sure I understand this diet entirely. Am I meant to be sticking to 1200 calories like on a normal diet but made up of lchf foods or am I meant to be ignoring calories completely?

Anyway, am planning smoked salmon and cream cheese cloudbread rolls for breakfast. Have already had creamy coffee, so hopefully that should help.

DearPrudence · 12/01/2017 09:58

Ignore calories Aderyn, and I'd second doing what Chester said. I sometimes feel a bit of nausea when I've not eaten for a long time. For me it's hunger

I feel fully in the swing of things now. Worked from home yesterday so managed tons of water and proper mealtimes.

ChesterDrawers · 12/01/2017 10:21

Aderyn, have a look at one of the past bootcamp threads on here and check out the list of 10 rules on the spreadsheet in the OP. There's no need to count calories at all, in fact the more you eat the better sometimes, as long as your calories are coming from the right place. Strawberries aren't allowed on official bootcamp, but they are one of the lower carb fruits so a matter for you, I suppose - just keep an eye on whether they are giving you cravings for other baddies.

Feel free to ask any questions on here. I've been on several bootcamps, as have lots of others, and although I could do with taking my own advice a bit more, I am pretty clued up on all things LC by now. There's usually someone around who can help.

Aderyn2016 · 12/01/2017 11:31

Thanks Prudence and Chester.
I think the strawberries are helping me, as I am pretty sugar heavy in my usual diet so they are stopping me from feeling like I have given up everything I like. I am sticking to avout 100g of strawberries per day, which I think is about 6g carbs. Now I have learnt how to make cloudbread, that has been helpful because it is nice to have a sandwich of sorts.
Am totally off the g&t now so I think everything else in my food is pretty low carb now, so I would be surprised if I went anywhere near the 20g allowed yesterday or from now on.
I wish that I liked meat more though as it would make this way of eating a lot easier.

Cloppy and anyone else worrying about the scales - I have downloaded an app called Progress to my phone which lets me take "bra & knickers" selfies. When you take a new photo it gives you a very faint impression of your previous photo so you can line them up properly. Then it puts all the photos together like a slideshow so you can see your body shape changing. You can take a photo every day, or at a longer interval of your choosing (I am aiming for every 3 days).

I'm hoping using this app will help me control my scales obsession (which can be depressing and demotivating for me). God help the poor person who finds my phone if I ever lose it Grin

ChesterDrawers · 12/01/2017 14:10

If you haven't made this LC bread before I heartily recommend giving it a go. It's BC light cos of the almonds but it is so lovely.

I usually have it with lots of butter and marmite but today I sliced it thinly, toasted it and topped it with avocado, lime and chilli and it was amazing. I made my loaf on Saturday and it's kept really well in the fridge. Cos of the flax it's really filling too so you don't need loads.

I'll stop now, but oh dear god, it's good Grin

Aderyn2016 · 12/01/2017 14:42

That looks yummy.
What is flax meal and where can I buy it?

nekobus · 12/01/2017 15:15

That's my favourite flax bread too Chester, I have a loaf cooling right now! Toasted with butter and marmite it's lush!

nekobus · 12/01/2017 15:16

I get my flax meal in Aldi, Aderyn they also do it in Sainsbury's usually near the ground almonds, chia seeds etc

lottieandmia · 12/01/2017 15:24

The app sounds a good idea. I'm feeling a bit better today but occasionally I get weak.

Notso · 12/01/2017 15:47

Thanks for the welcome, I'm already seeing the benefit of LCHF as I'm not hungry yet.
For brunch (I never eat breakfast) I had the rest of my soup (which I wasn't looking forward to but it tasted better today so maybe it was the migraine that put me off it) along with some meatballs and mayo at about 11.
I do forest school in the afternoons and am usually famished when I get back. Not today though, am just having a green tea to warm up.
Payday take away tonight, so we're having curry which should be ok.

I like the sound of that app, but not sure I can take a bra and knicker selfie, we don't have a full length mirror.

Aderyn2016 · 12/01/2017 15:54

Thank you

MrsKoala · 12/01/2017 16:21

That app sounds fab. I will ask DH how to do apps Blush when he gets in.

Feeling really good today. Had breakfast and didn't fancy lunch till 2.30pm (usually i am ravenous by noon).

not sure what to have for dinner. I've got pork chops and sausages....hmmm...i have swede so may do sausage and mash.

ChesterDrawers · 13/01/2017 10:05

Morning all, how's it going?

I feel like I am really in the zone at the moment, and even though I haven't been moving much since I bust my leg, I can tell I've lost a few lbs. I'm not having cravings, even though the house is still full of Christmas treats and I haven't had a drink since last Friday although it is the weekend so that might prove to be more of a challenge than it feels at 10am.

Today's plan is looking a bit like this...

B: three medium eggs, butter, dash of cream
L: left over spag bol, bit of cheddar
D: seam bream in lime, chilli and ginger butter, swede, broccoli, cauli and asparagus (not lots of each, just finishing fridge veg before shop comes tomorrow) roasted in olive oil

I might have a BPC mid-aft too. Had one yesterday for the first time in ages and it was lovely, felt like a real treat saddo.

NotdeadyetBOING · 13/01/2017 10:27

Morning all. I am feeling quite in the zone too. Have been going about 10 days, I think. Only off 4 lbs, but feeling better and appetite definitely waning. Interested in the LC bread recipe above and have ordered some flax meal. Does anyone know if it is better than the Carbzone low-carb bread? That is quite tasty too and only 4g of carbs per slice. Have been making lots of things from The Real Meal Revolution which are great. Liked yesterdays cream/garlic/courgette gratin so much I am having it again today…..
Going to a dinner party tomorrow night and slightly worried about that as don't believe in rejecting food someone has gone to the trouble of making. I suppose I'll just have to be super good for breakfast and lunch.

Veryflummoxed · 13/01/2017 10:32

Good morning chesterDrawers and everyone else. I'm feeling much more on top of things.

Yesterday's food was

Brunch leftover (from evening before) cod with parsley butter, mashed celeriac and trees.

Dinner Bolognaise sauce with Parmesan and sprouts and cauliflower.

Snack/supper. Three types of cheese a few cherry toms and cucumber.

Water going well.

It's the left overs that keep me going with this woe. I struggle more on the days we don't have any.

Veryflummoxed · 13/01/2017 10:34

Sorry notdead crossed post or I would have greeted you tooGrin

NotdeadyetBOING · 13/01/2017 10:39

Morning, veryflummoxed! Grin
Glad you are feeling positive too - long may it last!

ChesterDrawers · 13/01/2017 11:28

That gratin sounds good Notdead - can you link? I've had a look on the site you mentioned but can't find it.

NotdeadyetBOING · 13/01/2017 11:47

Hmm - I just looked and I see what you mean. They have only put some of the recipes there.

So - here goes:

Serves 4

800g courgettes
1 onion, roughly sliced
Handful thyme springs (don't leave them out - they make all the diff!)
1 whole head of garlic - cloves peeled, but left whole
100g butter, broken into pieces
250ml double cream
Salt & peppter

Preheat oven to 200.
Cut courgette into rough chunks and chuck in ovenproof dish along with onions, thyme & garlic.
Dot pieces of butter all over the top and pour in the cream.
Add seasoning.
Bake, uncovered, for about 45 mins.
You can grate a bit of cheese on top too for extra yumminess.

MEGA-lush.

ChesterDrawers · 13/01/2017 11:52

Oooooh, that sounds amazing. On the list, maybe for tomorrow night Grin

BetsyM00 · 13/01/2017 15:03

I'm in the zone too. Smile

Day five for me and, other than a bit of a headache on Tuesday, I feel great. I'm not counting carbs or weighing myself and I'm not going to as I get obsessed and start spreadsheets! I have lost some weight, bizarrely I can feel it in the corner of my jawbone most.

The low carb bread looks good Chester, I'll be another trying it out this weekend.

ClopySow · 13/01/2017 15:07

I just made these amazing we ham and egg muffins. If anyone is interested:

Push slice of ham into muffin tray thingies
Put in some finely chopped leek
Wee dod of cream cheese
Pour in egg mixed with double cream
Grated cheese on top
15 mins at 180.

Seriously - delish.
