Starting today - low carb

lasttimeround · 01/01/2017 08:18

Right it's time to get back in the low carb saddle. I basically follow boot camp rules. That works very well for me. I find getting into ketosis hard so making my public declaration of intent here. Planning to weigh and measure shortly.

So I'm starting today. Whingeing about carb flu all the way. Join me

I'm convinced i'm doing something wrong this time. No weight loss and i'm hungry all the time. I was never hungry last time.

Bibblewanda · 23/01/2017 19:28

I had salmon and courgetti with creme fraiche for dinner. Fried the salmon in coconut oil. First time using coconut oil and have to say I wasn't a fan - I'd not expected to really be able to taste coconut but I could and found it quite sickly. Does anyone else find that?

wombattoo · 23/01/2017 20:30

I weighed this morning and have gained as I expected but I have been back on track today.
Flibberty that is a fantastic loss.
Clopy It can be useful to post examples of what you have eaten for a few days and then guidance can be given.

Aderyn2016 · 23/01/2017 20:38

Messed up this evening. Visited my sister who gave me dark choc with orange filling. That cost me 17g carb! Should I skip dinner?

ClopySow · 23/01/2017 20:46

Ok.

Today:
B cheese leek and egg muffin - like a mini quiche but with no crust and coffee with cream
L salad with chicken, olives, parmesan, oily dressing
D salmon fillet and braised cabbage
S another muffin

Yesterday
B Coffee with cream
L 2 muffins with salad and mayo
D Salmon with braised cabbage
S Tuna mayo with cucumber

Last week, breakfast was usually muffin or boiled eggs with mayo, lunch was a salad with ham/cheese/olives/prawns in oil with mayo. Dinner was lambs breast/pork belly/chicken thighs with skin on with buttered brussels/cauliflower mash. Snacks were olives/muffins

I've had at least 4 pints of water a day

BIWI · 23/01/2017 22:09

I think it could be a couple of different things that you might want to tweak, Clopy.

First, your protein choices over the lat couple of days are all pretty lean, this also means that you should be looking to eat more fat. (Like you did with your protein last week)

It also looks to me like you're not eating enough at mealtimes. If you're still hungry, and you're needing to snack between meals, this would suggest that you need to eat more.

I don't know how much you have to lose, but it could also be that you need to drink more water. (Check the table in Bootcamp rules, which you'll find on the spreadsheet)

The other thing, though, is to ask how long you've been doing this? Weight loss isn't linear, and it seems particularly to be true when you're low carbing!

Lucysdiamonds · 24/01/2017 06:08

I've just started lowcarbing today. I've lost weight successfully before with this woe but also know I'll feel much better.

I'd not much in today but have tesco shop coming today.

How will I know if I'm in ketosis?

Today I had bacon and eggs for breakfast with a tsp mayo, butternut squash soup, scrambled eggs and a snack of cold roast beef. I've drunk lots of black decaff coffee and water.

I know I've not had much veg .. had nothing in but will eat better tomorrow.

I need to lose 2.5 stone.

ClopySow · 24/01/2017 07:08

I thought salmon was a good fatty protein?
The braised cabbage was with LOTS of butter and a bit of cream.

I cut dairy out a lot more yesterday and lo and behold the scales have gone down by 4lb. I think that's my answer. I looked at the chart for water and i need to be drinking another couple of pints a day. Thanks BIWI.

chatnanny · 24/01/2017 08:05

Sorry brainstorm, can't find the flax bread recipe that Betsy used, it had almonds in too I think. Have the flax now and can't find the recipe! Can anyone help as all ready to go!

BetsyM00 · 24/01/2017 08:20

chatnanny The low carb bread recipe was posted upthread by ChesterDrawers.

I used 1 cup = 165g of flaxseed and 0.5 cup = 60g of ground almonds which worked out really well.

ChesterDrawers · 24/01/2017 09:26

Morning all, still feeling good and loving this WOE. Only problem is my house is starting to smell a bit 'foody' thanks to all the fatty meat and frying. We did have burgers last night so I'm blaming them but bleurgghh, it's one of the things I hate about this WOE. Currently have candles burning everywhere as it's far to cold to open the windows.

Today's plan:
B: not feeling the love right now. Might have some yogurt and cream in a bit
L: well I have left over burger mix so might cook that up with some salad maybe (more smells!)
D: salmon in Parma ham, broccoli, asparagus

Bibblewanda · 24/01/2017 09:41

Hello all

Hard boiled egg, leftover salmon fillet and half an avocado for breakfast here.

Ok so one thing I've found is LCHF is expensive - any ways round this? Cheap meals?

NotdeadyetBOING · 24/01/2017 09:43

B: 2 slices low-carb bread with lashings of butter
L: roasted veg with pancetta in butter
D: Low-carb cottage pie (recipe from The Real Meal Revolution).

Will try to shift lazy arse to gym at some stage too.

Veryflummoxed · 24/01/2017 09:52

Ok braved the scales this morning. It was not good.

Yesterday I had breakfast natural yogurt

Snack two thin slices flax bread toasted with butter and marmite. Coffee with cream. (At different times)

Late lunch. Some leftover buttery veg and a small piece of pork.

Dinner. Steak. Dressed leaves. Mushrooms and avocado.

I'm having to get up a lot at night so tired, this is not helping my appetite and causing me to snack. Also I'm not drinking enough water. So I know what I need to do (any other suggestion will of course be welcome) now I've got to do it.

We done Flibberty. That's fantastic.

Aderyn2016 · 24/01/2017 10:10

Breakfast was 2 boiled eggs with buttery spinach and mushrooms. Have made low carb bread for later. Am drinking gallons of mint tea to keep up the water.
Not sure what to do for lunch and dinner. Maybe fried chicken and salad.

Flibbertyjibbit · 24/01/2017 12:54

Silly question - is flax meal and flax seed the same thing?

Thinking of making the low carb bread recipe as really fancy toast with marmite.

Bible I have been meal planning (so I don't waste anything) combined with shopping in lidl/aldi and not found to much of an increase in food shop. Fatty meat tends to be cheaper. I did an online shop with Tesco last week - they have 500g beef mince for £1.69 so I made burgers by mixing mince with 1 beaten egg and 25g grated parmesan, served with lettuce DP had chips.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 24/01/2017 13:15

flibberty, I used flax meal with mine which is more like flour. I used the same proportions as Betsy but reduced it to 3 eggs as I found 4 eggs made it a bit too moist for me.

It is very quick and easy to do though and I refined my second batch as the first attempt wasn't quite how I wanted it. I also added some dried rosemary which makes it even better to eat with a good cheese.

Flibbertyjibbit · 24/01/2017 13:30

Boldly Where did you buy your flax meal? Thanks for the tips.

Thought of another cheap meal Bible - I made cauliflower soup, it gave me 6 portions out of 1 cauliflower (£1) Chop up cauliflower, cook in vegetable stock then whiz up. I then scattered 15g cheddar on the top. You can also serve with crispy bacon which is nice, the cheap packs are fine if you are going for crispy bacon.

CaptainBraandPants · 24/01/2017 13:35

Well done on that fantastic loss Flibberty
Still going well here. I felt "snacky" last night, I think because I hadn't drank enough in the day. Had some frozen berries with Fage yoghurt which seemed to do the trick.
Had sausages with roasted veg and cougetti in cream cheese for dinner last night, a favourite all round (especially the dog).
I'm out tonight, so not sure what I'll be having, but I'll be good. I won't be late home, so if need be, I won't eat and have something once I'm home.

MiniCooperLover · 24/01/2017 13:46

BibbleWanda, I found that using the solid coconut oil but I have a liquid one now from Asda and thankfully there is no strong coconut smell or aftertaste.

Bibblewanda · 24/01/2017 14:10

Lunch was broccoli fried in butter with a hard boiled egg and feta.

Ok so I'm going to admit something - I just ate a Freddo. This is the first bit of milk chocolate I've had in 3 weeks (I've still been having a small amount of 85% dark chocolate). That freddo tasted so sweet as to be sickly. Seriously - it's set my teeth on edge. This is a good thing right? A sign I might be on the way to kicking the sugar???

Bibblewanda · 24/01/2017 14:10

Oh thank you mini, yes mine is solid.

GuinefortGrey · 24/01/2017 14:22

I am still 100% staying low carb (will be 3 weeks tomorrow but had an awful picky day yesterday. Just didn't feel satisfied no matter what I ate and I ate ALOT! Have AF to thank for that I think. Today I have made BIWI / Tom Kerridge's almond soda bread as was craving a carb fix and really didn't want to succumb. Mine didn't look quite as good as BIWI's (didn't rise as much - think my pan was too big) but the consistency was very much like soda bread and tastes fantastic warm and smothered with butter! A real cosy treat Smile

RupertsMum2 · 24/01/2017 15:11

Another headache this morning but gone now.

B. FF Greek yogurt, 1 sausage, coffee with cream
L. Chicken thigh, coleslaw, half avocado, green salad & mayo
D. Chicken curry and cabbage

Aderyn2016 · 24/01/2017 16:30

Made a low carb bread which tastes like a non sweet cake. Don't know if it the same recipe as BIWIs.
3 eggs
75g ground almonds
Half teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
3 teaspoons lemon juice
2 dessertspoons of butter
Mix and bake for 20 mins at 150 deg c.

If you want to make it more cake like, you could add sweetener.
