Starting today - low carb

Right it's time to get back in the low carb saddle. I basically follow boot camp rules. That works very well for me. I find getting into ketosis hard so making my public declaration of intent here. Planning to weigh and measure shortly.

So I'm starting today. Whingeing about carb flu all the way. Join me

Hi Notso my idea very similar, depending on quantities I'd do celeriac dauphinois or cauliflower cheese or creamy leeks. Serve the other veg plain or mashed and have with the sausages.

I came on to say Just had the flax bread for brunch. Went for both the boiled eggs and the marmite in the end (of course) with butter salt and pepper. It was GOOD and very satisfying. I had two slices and it was around 1carb a slice. Not strict boot camp I know but ok for light BIWI? I worry when something seems too good to be true.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 17/01/2017 13:46

The flax bread sounds lovely - I will try that at the weekend.

Posh lunch yesterday which ran to five courses and it wasn't hugely carby because the portions of veg were so small. Really delicious but I was stuffed afterwards. Didn't feel like eating anything till lunchtime today!

For lunch I've had some chicken soup with ff yoghurt. Not sure about dinner yet - might have mackerel...

Notso · 17/01/2017 14:03

Thanks for the inspiration, I'm doing sausage and mash with veg for the kids so I think I'll do the celeriac dauphinois for me with sausages. I have the recipe from the first time I did boot camp and had forgotten about it.
DH is back tomorrow night and my Mum can come in the morning so I'll be ok for then thank goodness.
Really pissed off at myself for eating the pasta last night.

Notso · 17/01/2017 15:47

Out of hunger and boredom I made the fake potato skins up thread. I overlooked the cauliflower so squeezed loads of liquid out of the before blending and I didn't add an egg.
I used a silicone tray so they didn't crisp underneath and fell apart on removal however they were really good. My 6 year old who likes neither cauliflower or potato declared them yum.

Notso · 17/01/2017 15:48

Overcooked not overlooked.

MrsKoala · 17/01/2017 20:01

Betsy - we buy 36-48 eggs a week when i'm low carbing. I eat 4-5 a day. DH has a couple a day too and i may bake with the boys.

Today i had a wobble and had a mouthful of xmas cake. It was the last bit. I have been starving all day. I think it's the breastfeeding. The last few days I just don't feel full, or i feel really hungry again 1-2 hours after eating.

Today
b - Avocado and mayo and 2 boiled eggs.
l - Pork chop and coleslaw
snack - 2 boiled eggs, mayo and a slice of cheddar
mouthful of xmas cake
d - Roast chicken, loads of skin, swede, broc, mayo.

Aderyn2016 · 17/01/2017 21:07

Hi all. Think I've had a readonable day today. Had 2 slices of flaxbread for breakfast with marmite and brie. A slice for lunch with half an avocado and dinner was egg salad with lemon and olive oil dressing and a generous dollop of mayo. Had 1 creamy coffee with cinnamon and a couple of mugs of mint tea.

It's true when people say that after a while vegetables taste sweet. I never really believed it before, always thought ' how can salad taste sweet?' But it really did.

Bought a bar of 85% cocoa choc for 'emergencies', but haven't touched it.

Can I ask about feeling jittery? Am a couple of weeks in to giving up artificially sugary food but am feeling tired but restless and hard to relax. Do you think it is the woe or something totally unrelated? Was also hoping this would help with my gastritis, but although I am a lot less bloated I still get stomach pain. Any wusdom would he gratefully received.

ClopySow · 17/01/2017 21:11

I've just popped in to recommend breast of lamb. Dear lord it was good. Seriously cheap, very fatty, really delicious cut of meat. Just bunged in the over with some garlic salt and olive oil. Amazing moist meat and lovely crispy fat.

BetsyM00 · 18/01/2017 00:04

Aderyn It takes longer for the body to convert fat into energy than it does carbohydrates, and it takes a good long time for the body to learn to do this at a faster rate.

When I've low carbed before, I tend to hit a point where just a short walk with the dog is hard work, in fact everything is hard. But within a few weeks I get really stompy and can walk for miles and miles. I reckon it's the body adjusting to fat-burning.

I'm not sure about jittery, but your tiredness could be this. As for stomach problems my GP says to give any dietary change a minimum of 3 months to see if it makes a difference. Cutting out sugar should reduce inflammation, but you've still given your digestive system a big shock. Give it time to settle.

Aderyn2016 · 18/01/2017 07:16

Thanks Betsy

Morning, got on the scales this morning despite saying I wouldn't. I've lost 2.5lbs since Jan 9 which, although not as much as I'd hoped, is not bad. My knee is still really swollen so I'm thinking some extra fluid there though. Must not become a scale hopper though, need to stay off now til the end of the month like I initially planned.

Today's menu chez Chester:
B: going to give [[http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/2014/07/egg-fast-recipe-snickerdoodle-crepes-low-carb.html this]] a go. Don't normally use sweeteners and I know not strictly BC compliant, but it looks so nice
L: two chicken thighs with mayo, some salad/veg whatever I have in the fridge
D: HM meatballs in Tom sauce with courgetti

Veryflummoxed · 18/01/2017 08:39

ClopySow we had Breast of lamb last night too. We had ours cut up and curry paste rubbed in then cooked in the oven. (Differing amounts of carbs in different kinds of curry paste, we use the lowest we can find) you are right, it is delicious. I enjoy cold the next day too. Not so long ago there is no way I could have stomached cold lamb fat it's amazing how much my tastes have changed.

ClopySow · 18/01/2017 09:05

I'm going to go and buy some more on the way home tonight flummoxed

It was about £2 for 2 small packs, but that was enough for two meals. So tasty. And lamb fat is gorgeous. I had mine with brussel sprouts dripping in butter and pepper.

BIWI · 18/01/2017 09:21

I've just bought Tom Kerridge's latest book The Domapine Diet which is a low carb recipe book. He's lost 11 stone doing this!

There's a very brief introduction, which is worth a read, but then some really good looking recipes. Although he does use artificial sweeteners, which is something I prefer to avoid.

Definitely worth a read though!

Veryflummoxed · 18/01/2017 09:25

I love sprouts with a good fatty meat. We often do the curried lamb with uncooked courgettie dressed with lime/lemon and mint and oil. Not made it recently, it was on the recipe thread, I'll have to go back for a reminder. And yes it is cheap. Smile

NotdeadyetBOING · 18/01/2017 09:30

Morning all.
That Tom K book looks v. interesting, BIWI May have to get it….
Drawing slight veil over yesterday. Note to self - don't buy tasty soft bread for the children as you will just eat loads of it yourself. GAH!
Otherwise have been v. good for 10 days or so.
Weight not falling off like a stone, but edging in the right direction.
On the plus side - finding rest of family enjoying quite a bit of the stuff I am making from The Real Meal Revolution (they normally moan like mad if I mention LCing).
Want to lose a stone. Can be slow - but MUST GO!

BIWI · 18/01/2017 09:48

Sorry - the title is The Dopamine Diet - got my fingers the wrong way round there!

What I thought was really great about the book was to see a chef finally realising that low carb could be a good option. I've never been lucky enough to go to either of his restaurants, but I'd hope it would mean that his menu is low-carb friendly.

ChesterDrawers · 18/01/2017 09:50

I can report that the snickerdoodle crepes I linked too tasted really sweet and artificial thanks to the sweeteners so I don't think I'll be repeating that any time soon. Shame because they sounded so lovely too. Still managed to eat 4 though Blush

That said, the eggs and cream cheese fried up really well so I will def try them as a savoury pancake without all the artificial shit.

Just hoping the seeeteners don't trigger my cravings, I've had them under control for a good while now.

Iamdobby63 · 18/01/2017 10:00

BIWI, I've also just purchased the book, some recipes are quite high in carbs for a carb sensitive person like me, however I think they could be tweaked a little as some of his portion sizes are very large. I try and find interesting veg recipes to jazz up my portion of the roast I cook for the family, I'm going to try the pulled lamb with mint gravy but will forgo the bisto! Just have the nice moist meat. (Hopefully - lol).

BetsyM00 · 18/01/2017 10:01

What sweetener did you use Chester? I've experimented with truvia/stevia in some 'sweet' fat bombs and ended up throwing everything in the bin; it all just tasted too chemically.

I can confirm that the pancakes taste just fine without it.

BIWI · 18/01/2017 10:35

Yes, agree re the carb counts. But he also uses ingredients that could be tweaked, e.g. using shallots for onions, etc.

And for maintenance, they're not bad recipes - even for Bootcamp Light lots of them would be OK.

(I was a bit surprised Shock about the Bisto Gravy Granules though!)

ChesterDrawers · 18/01/2017 10:56

Just some Splenda I've had in the cupboard for years. It tasted pretty awful TBH, if I wasn't so hungry I'd have binned it too.

Lesson learned though, I think I'd rather go without sweet stuff than suffer that again!

Iamdobby63 · 18/01/2017 11:39

BIWI, re bisto, I was the same but then as he explains that he consumes 90g of carbs per day a small amount could be incorporated. Plus as he states these are real 'man' portions.

I haven't calculated it yet but apart from a large portion of cauli couscous I can't, at a quick glance, work out why the Pork Kebabs and cauli couscous is 26g per portion?

Iamdobby63 · 18/01/2017 11:41

PS, I think Tom kerridge has done amazingly well especially considering what he does for a living.

nekobus · 18/01/2017 11:49

That's a shame about the crepes Chester, I just had a look and was going to have a go - let us know how you get on without the sweetener Smile

I've been so hungry these past few days. All LC but still, a lot of calories...

Today:
B - flax bread with butter and marmite, creamy coffee x2
L - heck square sausage and salad
D - smoked salmon, cream, prawns and courgetti
S - hopefully not too much but prob some brie & olives
