Ask anything you want here!

Hopefully between me and some of the other experienced Bootcampers we can answer your questions.

I've been trying to sign up with and without using the spreadsheet but no success....what am i doing wrong?

eleven59 · 16/05/2016 12:47

Hi

I have some questions if anyone can help.

  1. is low carbing high fat a long term way of eating or do carbs have to be reintroduced.
  2. I'm on day 3 of low carbs but feel really tired today and felt shaky and sweaty about an hour after my run this morning. I ate some nuts and a couple of nectarines and some leftover turkey and felt better quickly but I'm still so tired. And a bit grumpy if I'm honest.. Normal?
  3. I'm confused about fruit - can I eat it or not?

thanks.

Titsalinabumsquash · 16/05/2016 12:55

Ive read some conflicting stuff about caffeine... Is coffee allowed? I've already had one with a splash of cream and no sweetener, have I already ballsed it up?!

stilllovingmysleep · 16/05/2016 13:12

Hopelass, when you have your baby obviously, not your bang! Grin (although I suppose having a baby is a bang!!)

Eleven, no you can't eat fruit in the first 2 weeks of Bootcamp. Not sure about aftet

CiderwithBuda · 16/05/2016 13:32

Theigloo - post on the main thread and ask to be added - if you are on phone or iPad there seems to be issues using the spreadsheet.

elecen59 - no fruit in first two weeks. After that you can have some berries as they are lower in carbs.

LadyAntonella · 16/05/2016 13:42

I have a bit of a Blush question. I'm a bit worried that I might get constipated on this WOE. I would usually take Fybogel if I was worried I wasn't getting enough fibre, but it contains aspartame I think, so guess that's out. I know nuts are a no no too but are seeds ok? I might try eating flax seed as an alternative. I've heard of psyllium husks too but I think I'd better not buy any more Holland and Barratt stuff or my DH might divorce me Grin.

Pengweng · 16/05/2016 14:04

Oh crap. Are we not allowed coffee? I've had 2 black coffees (don't have milk or sugar anyway)

LadyAntonella · 16/05/2016 14:33

I've had two teas and a coffee - all with cream. Didn't know it was no caffeine! Blush

MushroomTree · 16/05/2016 14:47

Where do we stand on low carb protein shakes? I struggle with breakfast so thought this might be a good alternative.

If it is OK, any brands people can recommend?

SoMuchToBits · 16/05/2016 14:50

I'm pretty sure that tea and coffee are allowed, so long as they are either black or with cream/almond milk, but ordinary milk is not allowed, as too carby.

Eva50 · 16/05/2016 14:53

Are slim pasta/noodles/rice allowed on bootcamp.

blackteaplease · 16/05/2016 15:07

No Eva59 they are not but you can use courgetti as a pasta replacement and cauliflower rice as a rice alternative.

There is a type of noodle made from veg you can buy but the name escapes me at present.

blackteaplease · 16/05/2016 15:08

Sorry, that should say Eva50. Wish there was an edit function on here.

glenthebattleostrich · 16/05/2016 15:11

Tea and coffee is allowed. In fact bullet proof coffee is a good way of upping fat.

glenthebattleostrich · 16/05/2016 15:12

Sorry, hit post.

Best to Google it but it's coffee with butter and coconut oil if I remember rightly.

Chai tea with coconut oil and a dash of cream is also lovely.

Hopelass · 16/05/2016 16:10

Thanks stillloving Smile
Can I ask another quick question.....how would I know if yogurt (or anything else) is low carb? Is there a figure that needs to be stuck to to make a WOE low carb? i.e. No more than Xg a day? Thank you!

Whistle73 · 16/05/2016 16:51

Hopelass

I think the rule is under 5g per 100g, but obvs the lower you go the better.Total is 3.8g per 100 I think.

blackteaplease · 16/05/2016 16:56

Tesco finest Greek yogurt is also 3. 8lb per 100g

trixymalixy · 16/05/2016 17:08

How bad would a day "off" in the middle of bootcamp be?

DH and I have started today, but we have my MIL's 70th at the weekend where we will not have much control over what we eat.I'm hoping it's a buffet with cold meat, but it may well be lasagne.

Would we better restarting bootcamp after it?

oldlaundbooth · 16/05/2016 17:32

Is coconut milk allowed?

BIWI · 16/05/2016 17:47

flipdoodle Can you not try taking a vitamin C tablet instead? Fruit juice is one of the worst things you can drink from a low carb point of view! Fried tomatoes are OK as long as it's in moderation - they are a fruit, hence the sweetness - and can get carby quite quickly.

DoingIt yes, stuff like Berocca is out because of the sweeteners, unfortunately.

theigloo I'm not sure, but I think you need to download an app to be able to use Google Docs on a phone/ipad

eleven

1) is low carbing high fat a long term way of eating or do carbs have to be reintroduced.

I eat low carb most of the time! You don't have to eat bread/pasta/rice/potatoes at all! (I do have occasional 'blips' - occasionally I'll feel like something high carb, but in general I've just got used to not having them)

2) I'm on day 3 of low carbs but feel really tired today and felt shaky and sweaty about an hour after my run this morning. I ate some nuts and a couple of nectarines and some leftover turkey and felt better quickly but I'm still so tired. And a bit grumpy if I'm honest.. Normal?

Yes, it's normal - it's called carb flu! Don't eat the fruit, or the nuts at this stage of Bootcamp - you're only prolonging the length of time it will take you to become fat-adapted. You will feel better very soon - in the meantime, you need to make sure you're keeping your electrolytes balanced, which means sodium, magnesium and potassium. Cook with salt, and put it on your food. You might find that a hot drink made from Oxo or Bovril or Marmite helps you. Other good foods are salmon, avocado, spinach and full fat natural yoghurt.

3) I'm confused about fruit - can I eat it or not?

Have you read Bootcamp rules?! No. Not at all in the first two weeks. After that, when we move on to Bootcamp Light, you can have some in moderation - mainly berries.

Titsalina I've posted about caffeine on the chat thread - it's allowed on Bootcamp. Just be careful it doesn't lead to you using loads of milk!

MushroomTree I don't like the idea of protein shakes - have you looked at the ingredients?! They're full of artificial stuff, which we're trying to avoid. You don't have to eat a lot for breakfast, but it's important in the first couple of weeks to have something, as this helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

Eva50 yes they are! There's a couple of recipes using them on the recipe thread.

blacktea that's what Eva was asking about! SlimNoodles is the brand. They're noodles made from the Japanese konjac. Shirataki noodles to the Japanese. Sainsbury also sell them now - but can't remember what the brand is.

Hopelass if you're looking at labels, i.e. if it's a manufactured food, then generally you're looking for things around 4-5g carbs per 100g or under. However, you also need to take into account quantities you're eating - so something like Colmans English mustard is 13g carbs per 100g - but I defy you to eat 100g of English mustard!

LadyAntonella if you're getting your carbs mainly from veg and salad, and you're eating plenty of fat and drinking plenty of water, then you should be fine. You may find that you're likely to need to go less often on a low carb diet - it's normal. Constipation is only defined as having trouble going to the toilet, or having pain when you go.

trixy it wouldn't be a good idea, I'm afraid.

OP posts:
BIWI · 16/05/2016 17:51

oldlandbooth yes it is! Sainsbury's coconut milk and coconut cream is 2.9g carbs per 100ml.

Be careful though - creamed coconut is 7.7g!

Iamdobby63 · 16/05/2016 18:07

Are we allowed to use milled flaxseeds in this stage?

BIWI · 16/05/2016 18:33

Well ...

Strictly speaking, no, as they are a seed. But they are very good for you, so I'm a bit divided on this one.

The only other thing to say is that some people have reported that they have impeded weight loss. So over to you!

BIWI thanks for your answer. No, I hadn't seen the rules but I've found them now.
