Welcome! From experience, the first couple of weeks of every Bootcamp sees very fast moving chat threads, and so if you have a question, it's easy for it to be missed.

So post anything you want to ask on this thread and I and the other experienced low carbers will try and keep and eye on it and give you our best answers.

stuntnun and shebede just wanted to mention olive oil and coconut oil are not great from a health point of view once you heat them. they are ok to add to cooked food though which i do for extra fat. vegetable oils are not great from a health point of view regardless of whether you heat them or not so avoid sunflower, rapeseed, vegetable oil etc. the only fat i cook with is animal fat or butter. (if i was vegan i would prob use coconut oil though as it tolerates heat better than olive oil)

nearly1stonelighter · 22/05/2015 20:03

I usually cook at 220 C (428 F). Recommended oils are in bold (you need to be on the website, not the app to see the picture). I won't use palm oil as it is not produced sustainably so i use clarified butter mostly. I do use dripping, duck or goose fat for roasting. I am not sure of the smoke points for those but I think they are high.

Thanks BIWI and Nearly-
I've not really changed the amount of protein to any great extent apart from consuming more eggs than previously.
I had full blood tests done just last year and had no underlying problems with any organs. I think I need to chill a bit, take the painkillers and wait to speak to the do on Tuesday.
I had been using rapeseed oil and more recently cooked in the oven using coconut oil. I think I'll try ghee or lard now if I roast anything. Made celeriac chips earlier - would probably be crispier with lard.

shebedee · 22/05/2015 20:30

Crab- thanks to you too. Good advice.

StuntNun · 22/05/2015 21:07

Nearly I thought coconut oil was fine for cooking at a high heat and olive oil is okay so long as it isn't over the smoke point.

Thanks Patapouf
Don't come too close though Blush

I was wondering what impact wine should have on this WOE? I know we shouldn't be having any at all but I did have some last weekend and last night and I seem to have already put the weight back on that I lost in the first week! As you can probably guess from my username wine is one of my favourite things but I really need to lose this weight so if it has to go so be it. Do I really need to abstain completely for this to work? I've been 100% on track apart from that so didn't think it would make a big difference but I can't think of why else I would have put the weight back on. Thanks in advance.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 23/05/2015 12:14

Wine I love wine too much and unfortunately when I drink it does mean that I don't lose much weight that week, if any.

The body uses the alcohol as fuel, which means it's not burning fat. According to how sweet your wine is, there may be some carb content too.

WineCheeseSleep · 23/05/2015 17:29

Thanks for the advice Crabby, I guess I know what I need to do!

shebedee · 24/05/2015 13:08

If you have a carb blip (pretty big one even though it was just an evening)- how long does it generally take for one's system to get back to fat burning?

HarlotOTara · 24/05/2015 15:17

Hi,

I started low carbing 5 weeks ago and have lost 10lbs. I feel physically so much better as a result as I was suffering from awful wind and stomach pains and was burping for Britain, glad to say that has all gone. Was disappointed not to lose any this week. I have read on hear about a stall happening about 5 weeks is this so? Is there any tips or info about this? I did have a glass of wine on Friday, would that make a difference?

nearly1stonelighter · 24/05/2015 15:33

stuntnun coconut oil is only ok up to 350 F or 176 C.

nearly1stonelighter · 24/05/2015 15:34

shebedee i think it takes 2 days.

Patapouf · 24/05/2015 19:59

Everyone is different Shebedee some people only take half a day to fall back into ketosis, for others it will take 2-3 days,

BillyJoel · 24/05/2015 23:15

Water - i have no problem drinking lots of it, but do have a problem being the loo so often. Ther we are large parts of my day and week when i only have limited access to a loo as quickly as i need it if i drink the necessary amounts of water. Long car commutes with no services etc, and then away from the office on visits in remote places with no loss. Of course there are toilets if I search hard enough, but if I drink enough water, i don't have enough time to get there. From previous low carb woe, i know that drinking or not drinking the water makes the difference between me losing or not missing weight.

Anyone got any tips to basically make me drink enough without literally pissing my pants, other than Tenalady?

BillyJoel · 24/05/2015 23:16

Apologies for the typos- i hope you get what I mean.

shebedee · 25/05/2015 10:45

Thanks Pata and Nearly - I feel back to normal today but have more hunger pangs. It is a real shock to feel the impact that sugar has on your system. To take something positive away from my experience, it has been a real lesson learnt. I felt a bit poisoned yesterday. Weight has sts so will stay on BC for a few more days.

nearly1stonelighter · 27/05/2015 07:35

BillyJoel what about drinking a pint of water every hour you have access to a loo, but with no water an hour before travelling and during travelling?

BIWI · 27/05/2015 09:05

You won't have to forego wine forever, WineCheeseSleep - but certainly whilst you're doing Bootcamp.

Wine has carbs in it - and if you're like me capable of sinking a bottle of wine, you will be consuming a lot of carbs, and also a lot of calories. I know we say that calories don't count on Bootcamp, but it's a lot of extra calories added to your day, that would be better spend on other foods.

Add to that the fact that your body will burn alcohol as its first source of fuel, so all the time you're drinking, your body is burning that and not fat.

When I first started low carbing seriously, it took me 10 months to lose 2 stones. It took me so long because I allowed myself to drink wine at the weekends, or if we went out, or if I was on holiday. I figured that you have to live as well! Whilst I would have loved to lose the weight in far less time, on balance this way suited me best.

Choose your best!

Billy, i drink as much as i can (usually a litre before and with breakfast, and then one following it) and stop drinking for about an hour before leaving (making sure to wee before i leave!). I have disability related continence issues, but am yet to seriously wet myself while out with this increased water consumption Grin Then, i take a litre water bottle with me, so as soon as i'm on my way home, i can drink it

justonemorethread · 27/05/2015 14:58

Hi Biwi I seem to remember you have a blog with recipes? I'm sure that's where I saw the cauliflower pizza recipe.
Now done a few searches and I'm obviously not searching with the right words… Could you give a link?

BIWI · 27/05/2015 19:16

Here you go

I haven't blogged for a while as I've been a bit busy but shall remedy that over the next few weeks I hope.

Thanks Beyond. I took your advice about water today and it worked a treat.

runmummyrun123 · 30/05/2015 18:46

What am i doing wrong? i have no energy whatsoever. 6 weeks ago I ran a half marathon and since starting this woe i am struggling with 5km. Help! Any ideas why this might be happening as feel better in self with fewer carbs.

BIWI · 30/05/2015 19:04

It takes a bit of time for your body to convert from burning carbs to burning fat. Be patient, and soon you will find that your performance is as good (if not better) than it was before.

If you're interested in the science this is a really good book about how low carb eating and athletic performance can work really well
