MrsK - my DS has sensory issues relating to food, for a very long time he had (still has to an extent) an extremely restricted diet and we worried he was not getting everything he needed, he also hasn't touched milk since he was weaned. He is now in year one at school and has finally started to try new foods, it helped massively that the first few things he tried were things he liked as it created a positive association with trying unknown foods. He can still be massively resistant to new things and even to foods he usually eats no problem but we are slowly expanding his accepted foods and he will now eat certain cheeses, yoghurt, a few types of meat and even a few vegetables etc rather than just sandwiches. Last night he sat down with us and ate some fried rice and battered chicken from DPs Chinese takeaway willingly, he even tried the lemon sauce although he didn't like it, this is massive for him as he has refused chicken in any form since he was a baby and won't touch any kind of sauce! He is getting better with food and slowly starting to understand that sometimes we have to eat things, even if we don't like them, to keep us healthy. I generally let him get on with feeding himself although he does need encouragement (and supervision) but even now if he is feeling stressed out about things, even with food he likes, if it needs a knife and fork to eat it I will sometimes have to feed him to get him to eat it. I don't know if any of this is helpful but I just wanted to try and reassure you that even with a really restricted eater things do get better. I would try getting him to try new things but not force the issue or make it a big deal, as long as he is eating something try not to worry, and if he does sometimes need a bit of help that's ok too.

That sounds tough Birds . We have been lucky with DS in that his palette is quite varied to taste. It's the texture he struggles with. So anything mashed and spoonfed to him will be eaten (not pasta tho). Anything left in a chewable form and dry or left to him to eat will be left. He will happily eat chicken livers and fish and spices etc. He won't touch fruit or certain foods with his fingers.

It makes snack times hard because things like finger foods and chopped fruit and veg are a no no.

Apart from biscuits of course. He seems to manage to touch and eat those. Hmm

Beryl - that fish pie sounds lovely. Thank you. I've never put boiled eggs in but i might try for a change.

Fish pie question - Does your 'sauce' curdle? Mine does every time. It always has a cottage cheese consistency. I am thinking it may be the smoked fish. I used to think it was the lemon, but i stopped using it and it still curdled Confused

sassandfaff · 18/03/2015 10:55

mrsk there is a cheat fie pie on the recipe thread, where you use Philadelphia garlic and herb soft cheese for the sauce. Might be easier for you.
(Obviously not if there are allergy issues)

BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 18/03/2015 11:26

AF has rocked up most unexpectedly. Which explains a few thing Blush sorry for the slight rantiness.

MrsK your description of your Dh's solutions made me laugh. Ds used to suggest he go live with his dad when I told him to tidy his room. Hmm

Romey not sure there is a low carb alternative to jelly tots Blush totally over whatever it was last night, and feeling all is right with the world food wise. I do really enjoy this woe but I think not being able to have the treaty things like cream and any thing dairy wise has side swiped me a bit too much atm. I'll get there but it will take a bit of time to adapt. And in the grand scheme a minor blip vs a massive derail has to be worth the minor blip. Not planning on making a habit of it though. I have a cunning plan. Wink

bettybigballs · 18/03/2015 11:35

STS this week but overall happy with my losses. Going to really watch our for carb creep this week, want to start shifting weight again, i've really slowed down.

Would someone be able to post that link to those pork dumplings / gyoza things recipe? I've had a look at the previous weeks thread but can't for the life of me find it. Thanks! B x

BerylStreep · 18/03/2015 11:43

Mrs K mine doesn't curdle. Might have something to do with taking it off the heat before adding the creamy sauce?

almahart · 18/03/2015 11:52

How are you getting on sass (sorry chester). I finally had two black farmer sausages and some scrambled eggs at about half eleven. Was very hungry by then, but not blood sugar/irritable hungry.

MrsK you are amazing, dealing with all you have on your plate. My family is full of asd, both diagnosed and undiagnosed (!). It is exhausting having to plan and think for other people. I do hope you can get some time for yourself though. Sorry to hear the baby is unwell

imustbepatient · 18/03/2015 11:59

MrsK I hope the Drs appointment helps to sort things out for DS2's bug and it isn't anything serious.

Multiple Flowers for coping with everything you have on your plate. I really hope some changes can be made to your set up which help you, but of course within the confines / realities of the situation.

Still just KOKO here. My body seems ridiculously determined to hold onto its fat, as I have had such little loss over this BC. I always knew this would a long process for me to lose the four and a half stone but I really do need to see some sort of results now and again, in order to keep up the motivation!

sassandfaff · 18/03/2015 12:00

alma I was really hungry, but decided to wait. Put 3 eggs on to boil, took the bins and bottles out, bumped into elderly next door neighbour who likes to chat, came in to the eggs boiling and had to judge how long they had been on for, mistimed it so the whites were still soggy, threw one in the bin and re boiled the other 2.

Then decided to stab the fat bomb loaf with a knife to get bits off.

Not a great start........ Grin

Mrsstevejones · 18/03/2015 12:04

Hi SayraT - i adapted the recipe from

fromweelicious.com/2010/07/29/spinach-ricotta-bites/ - Ricotta Bites

250g ricotta
1 cup of cheese - mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan - i like strong ones but whatever
2 L eggs
Cooked and cooled ingredients - broccoli, chorizo, chicken, sausage, ham, leeks - again whatever - about 1 cup full.
Salt, pepper, garlic, herbs, chilli

Mix all together and put into greased muffin or fairy cake tins, pop in the oven for 15-25 mins at 180 degrees, should be slightly brown. Great for lunch or breakfast - i microwave with extra cheese on top.

Chorizo and chicken is nice. Ham, sp onion also yum. Bacon lardons and leeks with mustard.

Would love to hear any other flavour combinations. I make them nearly every week, my kids love them.

Gcalgske · 18/03/2015 13:18

I feel rank and sorry for myself.
DD has a high temp since yesterday (38.8) and been up most of the night bathing forehead and administering calpol. Desperate for pizza and coke. Made a cheesy crisp in pan and topped with tom purée, pepperoni and mozzarella and a pint of coke Zero. Had to be done - still v low carb but dairy again :(

mootime · 18/03/2015 13:27

Sorry to hear so many people are feeling rough.
Just wondered if anyone had tried to do 5:2 with bootcamp? I know some people do 16:8 type fasting, but I don't think that would work for me.
Just wondering if it might be something to help me deal with my inability to reduce meal sizes etc...

Notso · 18/03/2015 13:35

Hi all. Dropped off the thread last week. Had a terrible Saturday for bootcamp, chips, chocolate, crisps, washed down with a lot of Bacardi and proper coke Blush got straight back on the wagon Sunday though probably drank a bucket of tea. Had a 2lb gain but was hangover free unlike my previous low carb nights out.

Need to catch up with the thread now.

BIWI · 18/03/2015 13:38

Quadrophonic
Hello, jumping in, I've been lchf for a year now, losing 2.5 stones. I had a health check in work a few months ago which was largely ok (still had too much body fat) but cholesterol all ok at 4.7

I had an eye test today and the optician asked if there was any history of cholesterol problems in the family as she could see cholesterol in my eye??

Now I'm worried, im only 42 and like this WOE, it keeps my weight down and I feel very healthy on it. She suggested I visit my GP but I'm a bit afraid they'll say to stop this WOE. Anyone else had this??

Sorry, Quadrophonic, I saw your post earlier and meant to come back to you, but I forgot Blush

This WOE is supposed to be very good for keeping your cholesterol 'in check'. However, the other thing to know is that for women (I assume you're female, but obviously could be wrong!) lower cholesterol, especially as we get older, is actually not a good thing. It's associated with higher rates of heart disease.

That said,

a) I'm not sure what seeing cholesterol in your eye means
b) it sounds like the issue might be a familial/genetic issue, which is different from 'ordinary' concerns over cholesterol.

And I don't know enough about that to be able to advise you. StuntNun might know more.

But if in doubt, I would go and see your GP - just be aware that chances are you'll be pushed on to statins at the first whiff of high cholesterol. Cynic, moi?

There was chat on the fathead fb group about increases in cholesterol whilst you are losing....hmm will try to dig up some info.

BIWI · 18/03/2015 14:04

Generally, it's very worth reading the work of Dr Malcolm Kendrick on cholesterol.

His book is really interesting too

Gcalgske · 18/03/2015 14:06

This was linked to/talked about - it can reduce bad cholesterol in the longer term but increase the good. You have to be careful to get Dr to do a full panel apparently as the 'headlines' will probably just say 'too high, give statins'.

Mrsstevejones · 18/03/2015 15:41

Hi Mootime - i very successfully combined 5:2 with LCHF in last Mays bootcamp - i was warned by BIWI that i wasnt eating enough but it did the trick for me and i lost 1st 7lb in the 10 weeks - I havent fasted this time around and then i had, had a baby a few months earlier. My weight loss hasnt been as speedy this time around but now i weigh slightly less and i havent fasted.

Heres how i did it:

I ate dinner on sunday at 6pm then on the monday i had a BPC for breakfast and one for lunch - aprox 500kcal. Then i had my normal dinner - occasionally something a bit more carby e.g a Lloyd Grossman jar of curry sauce 5-7g carbs per 100g which i served with cauli rice and chicken thigh.

I did the same on thursdays. After an initial period of adjustment i felt great and really got into the swing of it. I might start doing it again actually. I was walking loads with the kids as the weather was nice so that will have also had an effect.

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Mrsstevejones · 18/03/2015 15:42

Sorry i should read my messages before i post them but you get the drift!

mootime · 18/03/2015 16:26

Thanks MrsSteve.
So you sort of fasted from 6-6 rather than over the course of one day?
That's an interesting way of doing it, but would only work for me on a Sunday eve as DH has a silk if we don't eat together.

I'm going to try it over the next two weeks fasting mon and Wednesday (Thursday is my day with the kids...)
It's worth a try to get things moving in a last push !

JuanPotatoTwo · 18/03/2015 16:51

Hi, hope no one minds me butting in. I've been low carbing right along with you all but, not having anything sensible or interesting to contribute, have restricted myself to the questions thread. But today I got my mother's day present from ds2 and really wanted to share it - nobody else quite appreciating how chuffed I was! Behold!

Week 9 Low Carb Bootcamp - the belated Chat thread!!!
JuanPotatoTwo · 18/03/2015 16:53
