From previous experience, the first few weeks of Bootcamp chat threads move very quickly, so having a thread dedicated to questions means that you stand more chance of getting an answer quickly!

So if you have any specific questions, post them here.

Hello hello! Totally new to bootcamp, sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick already but my question is: is it ok to try to do Bootcamp when BFing?
I have a HUGE appetite at the moment (DS2 is 5mo) and my sweet tooth is the worst it's ever been, so I want to try low carbing but reckon Bootcamp might be necessary to keep me on the wagon as such.

I'm in a similar position Soon but my DD is a bit older. I think there is a Bootcamp light with some extra carbs allowed but I can't find the food list at the moment.

I've been low carbing about two weeks and I'm totally shattered after running about 5k. I can normally manage 8or 9! Is this the carb flu i've heard tell about or is there anything I can eat that might help? I succumbed to a banana this morning and felt instantly better.

Glad to hear it's a temporary thing! It was just a bit soul destroying that I'd lost weight and was feeling pretty good on the diet but couldn't actually run. I'll stick with it. Any tips on good foods to eat post run? Normally I'd have a banana pre run then porridge and fruit after...obviously not an option now!

I have been hovering around the low carb threads for ages. I do SW, but feel I eat too many carbs. However, I eat very little meat or fish, don't really like it them. Is it possible to low carb and not eat meat/fish? Where do Quorn alternatives stand?

Rhubarb - the first couple of weeks are tough for your body because you're switching it from burning carbs to burning fat. It does mean that exercise during this period will feel much harder. However, once you are keto-adapted (i.e. burning fat rather than carbs), you will be fine. Indeed you may see better performances.

If you're interested, there's a really good book called "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance" by Drs Volek and Phinny. They have been researching low carbing for a while, with a specific focus on athletes.

When I was running (that all went to pot once I started having to commute to a job rather than working from home!) I used to run in a fasted state - didn't need to eat carbs for fuel, as there is plenty of bodily fat to use up.

After your exercise, protein is a good thing to eat - eggs are ideal, or some full fat natural yoghurt.

Water ?? Is this pure water or does my green tea count ? Thank you

123Jump - you can eat low carb and be a vegetarian, but it's not quite as easy as it is if you eat meat/fish. Rose Elliott has written a low carb diet for vegetarians, with a really good recipe book to go with it Might be worth buying a copy?

If you have a look at the recipe thread you'll find some vegetarian recipes as well

SoonMeansNever - Bootcamp isn't a good idea as it's very low carb - you'd be better off following Bootcamp Light (which means you eat carbier veg and also add in some fruit, in the form of berries, and also nuts/seeds).

Sorry, what about Quorn mince/chicken pieces? Are these suitable for low carb?

Also, how do you know how many carbs you can eat in a day?

123jump the point of bootcamp is that if you follow the rules and eat from the allowed lists of food, you don't need to count carbs - your carb intake will be at a weightloss level.

Re Quorn. If the carb count is below 3% or so, it would be ok for bootcamp. I don't know much about it as I think it's horrible processed stuff! Briffa isn't keen on it...

Here goes:

• Are chickpeas, lentils and beans (e.g. speckled beans, not green beans) allowed?
• What you do you mean when you say 'check the carbohydrate content'. What should I check for? I'm assuming it's not just high carbs = bad, low carbs = good. Or is it? If so, what about creme fraiche or camambert cheese for example?
• Is there no calorie counting at all? Again, I'm a bit confused when you say get a sense of vege portions to start. Is there a recommended number of grams per serving?
• I understand the principle that we should favor the low carb veges. But how much of the higher carbs - still on the allowed list - can we eat in these first two weeks? Eg butternut which is on the allowed list but high in carbs
• Is (fresh) lemon and lime juice allowed in these first two weeks (e.g. a squeeze of lemon over food, rather than a glass of lemon juice). Or does that count as fruit?

It is just that i don't eat much meat, so for certain things it is good to use as a substitute for me.

No they aren't allowed.

It is pretty much high carbs = bad, yes. Look at the label - under carbohydrate content, look at the values per 100g of the food (be careful, as quite often labels will also give a 'per serving' figure as well) which is the % of carbs. On the first 2 weeks of bootcamp you stick to foods around or below the 3% mark.

If you stick to the veg on the allowed list, you don't need to worry about serving sizes to start with. You never, ever count calories on bootcamp.

No butternut squash on bootcamp, afaik.

Lemon and lime juice is surprisingly carby, so go easy. A squeeze here and there is ok though.

Yup. Good eh?!

As you get near your goal weight you may have to tinker with portion sizes and reducing dairy/stuff you think might stall you. But to start with, just stick to the rules and don't worry about amounts, portions, counting carbs or calories.

I've been having Fybogel to keep me regular. Is this allowed in bootcamp?
