Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread

BIWI · 28/09/2014 23:18

From previous experience, the first few weeks of Bootcamp chat threads move very quickly, so having a thread dedicated to questions means that you stand more chance of getting an answer quickly!

So if you have any specific questions, post them here.

Why have I got the munchies today?

Fat - tick
Water - tick
All other things - tick

Sometime when all is going well and weight is coming off, I feel the need to sabotage myself, No idea why, think it's those kind of munchies.

BIWI · 08/10/2014 17:15

Holy - because it's a nice round number Grin

I did the last one for 5 weeks, but it was a slightly different (and even stricter) format.

But to be honest, it's entirely up to you how long you do it for.

The critical thing is the first two weeks, to get you into the swing of things, and into fat-burning mode from carb-burning mode. Then after that it's up to you.

Why do you want it to be shorter, as a matter of interest?

Hello! Found the questions thread!

I have a sore throat and headache from a cold coming, is lemon and ginger tea ok?

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/10/2014 19:23

Oi! What you're doing 'ere, missus?!

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/10/2014 19:28

BIWI I only stop bribg in ketosis a couple of weeks ago because I stalled and wasn't kosibg anymore. So I decided to 'bulk up' (I train 5 days a week, 3 x weights and 2 days if cardio/ stretches/ farting about at the gym). So I reintroduced some fruit and baked some almond flour scones. I'm now on about 70 carbs a day. Weight the same.

Sorry, to answer your question, I have a couple of celebrations at the end of November and I'm not ready to start the boot camp just now, so thinking next week or the following for 4 to 5 weeks.

I'm guessing I'm actually at my optimal weight but I'm hoping to gain muscle so would like to drop a bit more fat before that.

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/10/2014 19:29

Ooops, sorry, buttery fingers on ShitePhone!

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/10/2014 19:32

Peeps, stay away from those jelly stock cubes. The have glucose syrup in them Hmm
Unless it's common knowledge and I only recently caught up.

Pisseslikeahorse · 14/10/2014 11:26

hello all, just found out my bathroom scales are really bad, any suggestions on whats a good set / make to buy ?

SayraT · 14/10/2014 13:40

pisses I bought a Salter set of scales from Argos, they weren't too expensive (but do feel quite flimsy there were sturdier ones) but they have a 15 year guarantee.

I known that body fat monitor things aren't very accurate but these scales can measure fat and water percentage.

I tested them out with various people and the BF %age that was given for each person seemed close enough.

Me: 47% when I started now 42%
OH: refused to measure (he was at that time, 5ft 9 and weighed 8st 7lbs) but his BF measured at hospital was 4% so fair enough
Friend 1: measured at 24% (she is about 5ft 6, 9 stone)
Friend 2: measured at 37% (she is about 5ft 4, 12 stone)

This is them scales

miffy49 · 14/10/2014 14:16

I got some Omron ones recommended by a fellow BCamper during the 5wk BC but can't remember who! They do body fat, visceral fat & skeletal muscle. As SayraT says, the body analysis scales aren't really accurate but the newer versions do seem better than the original models. They have helped keep me on track because I was getting a bit peeved about being stalled but they have actually shown that whilst my weight is pretty stable, my fat % is going slowly down and my muscle % is rising a bit.

I would have thought that one of the analyser scales would be an investment given your exercise regime. There were several on Amazon at various prices.

Can someone tell me about kale crisps please

ChesterDrawers · 14/10/2014 18:37

All you need to know about kale crisp Janx is that they are a-maze-ing Grin. They are my new fave thing.

I've tried a few recipes but my fave so far is just 1tsp olive oil, and good grind of salt and pepper and Parmesan. You can basically use any flavourings you fancy. Have a google and see if any take your fancy.

I remove the big stalks, pop them in a bowl, drizzle on olive oil and really work it in, add flavourings then cook at 150c for 10 mins. Pop into a bowl, demolish then cook some more.

Repeat til you have no kale left Grin

janx · 14/10/2014 19:16

Thanks -I am looking forward to them!!

janx · 14/10/2014 20:16

Omg -crispy kale!! Where have you been all my life?

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/10/2014 20:22

Will have to try it. I tried to cook a bag of kale in a normal way (i.e. like spinach) and it was vile. I Then reheated it in the pan following day and the crispy bits were rather nice.

So urs, it seem the crisps are the way to go.

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 15/10/2014 12:42

BIWI or someone equally helpful Smile

How many carbs to eat to maintain the weight? I do weights 3 days a week and 2 days off circuits/ yoga/ pissing about at the gym.

miffy49 · 15/10/2014 13:11

That's like asking how long is a piece of string! I'm afraid you just have to find your own tolerance point as it varies for everyone. The rule of thumb seems to be to add in around 5gr carb a day and wait a week to see what effect it has. If you still lose you add in another 5g and keep going until you find your balance point.

If you don't like counting carbs you just slowly add more complex carbs until you find what you can eat. I think some people stick with eating very low during the week and having weekends to eat pretty much what they want. Do you lose fast on BC? If so you may have quite a high tolerance level. If you struggle you may find you will always have to be quite conscious of what you eat.

pootlebug · 15/10/2014 19:03

Also HolyQuad you don't necessarily need to add carbs - you might find a level of carbs that you are happy with but that given your exercise levels you consciously need to add fat to maintain weight.

janx · 15/10/2014 19:37

My fussy son just ate crispy kale.... I shall be buying more!!
On another note -can anyone recommend an exercise I can do at home to work on my back fat?

Liveinthepresent · 16/10/2014 07:02

Morning bootcampers!

Two questions ( still greedy)

  1. Friend coming for dinner tonight - ideally wanted to have something slow cooked at the ready so we can eat as soon as DC down - can anyone suggest any recipes I can't trawl the recipe thread before work it's too big! Was thinking maybe some pork and chorizo and shallots but I used to bulk these sorts of things with pulses so am a bit stuck!

Also can anyone tell me where to find blurb on why weight loss may stall weeks 3/4 so I am better armed to deal with it,

Thanks

BIWI · 16/10/2014 08:40

There's a lovely recipe on the recipe thread for slow cooked pork with coconut - can you not search for it?

Also, StuntNun has done a really good explanation about weeks 3-4. Wish I could remember it but hopefully she will see this and come along and help.

Quick help needed - is 3.5g carbs per sausage too much. I'd usually have three.

DH got the wrong ones out of the freezer but I don't want to eat them if they are going to mess up the diet.

I think I already know the answer Sad

Liveinthepresent · 16/10/2014 22:00

thanks BIWI i found that one i think - is it the ginger one? I was too late for tonight but had it in mind for the weekend as DH will love it.
There is so much info on here but its not always easy to locate while at work and using iPhone.

BIWI · 17/10/2014 13:46

Oh yes - I tend not to bother much using the phone app!

Chester - that's pretty high if you're going to have 3 (sorry I didn't see this yesterday). You should be getting your carbs from veg and salad mainly, not from processed foods

Look out for The Black Farmer sausages - they're really tasty and very low carb
