Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread

BIWI · 28/09/2014 23:18

From previous experience, the first few weeks of Bootcamp chat threads move very quickly, so having a thread dedicated to questions means that you stand more chance of getting an answer quickly!

So if you have any specific questions, post them here.

THanks Crabby. More questions, I hope you don't mind:

  • I thought anything on veg counter list on BIWI's spreadsheet is permitted - hence the butternut. And bean sprouts. Do you mean to tell me [sob] that we can only eat the veg listed at 3g of carbohydrate per 100g [sobs mount].That, um, doesnt leave much [sobs turn into wails].
  • So the hummus I just bought, which is 9g of carbohydrate per 100g is out? [wails get louder]. Ditto the creme fraiche at 4.1 carbs per 100g??? And the cream - also at around 4g of carbs if I remember rightly.
CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 14:21

User the ingredients list is:
Each single dose sachet of granules contains 3.5g Ispaghula Husk B.P., in an Orange Flavoured base containing Aspartame E951 and Saccharin Sodium Sweeteners, Potassium Bicarbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Polysorbate 80, Silica Colloidal Anhydrous, Citric Acid and Beta - Carotene and Riboflavine, Sodium Phosphate Colouring

So carb count probably negligible but full of artificial sweeteners, which we try to stay away from on bootcamp. Do you suffer from constipation? Personally I'd take milled flaxseed instead, but I'm going to leave this for BIWIguru to answer!

My double cream is 2.3%, so fine. My creme fraiche is 2.6% and 4.1% sounds pretty high - are you sure you didn't buy the half fat one (that's got modified maize starch in because they took out the fat so it tasted shit Hmm and hence a higher carb count)?

aNote no worries. It's a big fat NO to hummus, I'm afraid - you'd better hide that before BIWI comes after you with her big stick. Wink

I'll go and look at the allowed veg list now but I'd be surprised (and very pleased!) if butternut squash is on there. On previous bootcamps it's been verboten, and you certainly shouldn't be eating it in the first fortnight when you're not even allowed berries etc. Don't worry, there's plenty of delicious stuff you can eat. Grin

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 14:23

Sorry the cream paragraph was in answer to aNote not User.

aNoteToFollowSo · 29/09/2014 14:31

Thanks again Crabby. So much for my big bootcamp shop - I'm clearly going to have to do it again, and hunt down the 'right' cream, cream fraiche and similar.

BUT but but - my camembert cheese package says it has ZERO carbs. Not a gram. Shurely shome mishtake here ?? Why would cream have carbs and cheese none? This low carb business is a whole new universe.

Am gutted about hummus :(

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 14:33

Hmmm... squash is on the vegetable carb count list, as are carrots. Both I thought were too carby for bootcamp, but I will await BIWI's judgement on this. I've been eating both this month whilst eating lowish carb and still lost 7lbs, but generally for bootcamp you want to stick to veg that are below 4% definitely and below 3% ideally. I adore butternut squash but you can certainly taste the sugars in it lovely and sweet. Grin

dementedma · 29/09/2014 14:35

advice re low carb and diabetes please for very overweight DH.
Is it safe to low carb?

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 14:42

aNote most cheeses are very low carb (this pleases me greatly, as am a cheese fiend!), although you have to watch the softer ones - cream cheeses, boursin, are a bit higher and cottage cheese is too carby. Most are fine though. Cream has a few more and milk has more still. Yoghurts vary enormously - Total greek yoghurt is ok but I just brought a big tub of probiotic natural yoghurt for DD's smoothies and that's around 8% Shock.

It does get easier, I absolutely promise! You just have to read read read the labels to start with until you learn what's allowed and what's not. It's second nature to me now (which is not to say that I don't have long periods where I eat all the carby crap anyway - but at least I'm doing it knowingly Grin).

Websites are your friend - if you go to the website of the supermarket you buy from, they usually have nutritional info for each product. Like this so that you can check for lower carb products. Tinned tomatoes, for instance, vary a lot.

And don't call me Shirley. Grin

(quote from Airplane, for anyone who thinks I've lost the plot). Wink

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 29/09/2014 14:50

Ello! Just checking in for a lurk. Still plugging away at it, got given a slow cooker from my Nan and planning to cook some stewing steak in there. Now off to read the thread in more detail.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 15:05

Hi Gilbert this is the questions thread - chat thread is here Smile

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 15:07

Ma yes lots of people with T2 Diabetes low carb to control their blood sugars. There are a few experienced bootcampers who do so and I'm sure they'll be along to give you advice.

gillyginger · 29/09/2014 15:45

Just wondering is unsweetened almond milk ok, quite like it in my coffee ,and is it ok to drink Apple cider vinegar on low carb thanks

kukesi · 29/09/2014 16:08

What sausages do people use, Im not feeling any of the ones I have tried recently.

miffy49 · 29/09/2014 16:53

dementedma Depends if you're Type 1 or 2. Also if insulin is involved. Its ideal for Type 2. I was pre diabetic and sliding rapidly into full-blown Type 2 and its got me back into normal ranges in no time. Smile I know of some Type 1s who are doing it with great results but you have to be very careful if insulin is involved as your glucose can drop quite quickly as you go over to fat burning and you may need to alter your doses.

miffy49 · 29/09/2014 16:54

Is there a plot Crabby? I don't think I ever had it to lose it! Grin

kukesi · 29/09/2014 17:17

There is a lower carb recipe for hummus using courgette, it does have tahini so maybe boot camp light. Not tried it though.

will this link work

kukesi · 29/09/2014 17:17

Fanfuckingtastic my link worked! There will be no stopping me!

kukesi · 29/09/2014 17:27

Rhubarbcrumbled
Your user name sucks, I think the only thing I have craved on this WOE is crumble and I don't usually eat puddings, taunting me Grin
Anyways until someone much clever comes along, fat balls main ingredients are fat, on this WOE the main food group you should be eating is fat as this is where energy comes from, so fat balls are a simple way to up the %, or have as a snack if hungry.
I reserve the right to be wrong!

Pisseslikeahorse · 29/09/2014 17:45

Afternoon all

I'm back for a 3rd BC (actually haven't really come off since May) so have done well but want to have another push to a decent target weight and round down and up a couple of figures. Smile

good luck all

Pisseslikeahorse · 29/09/2014 17:48

whoops wrong thread

ChesterDrawers · 29/09/2014 18:06

Is half an average swede (mashed) too much for 1 meal? I've not eaten a lot today and have made cottage pie for tea. But I used a whole swede between two of us and now I'm worrying. It's got a leek, a courgette and a shallot and a generous glug of cream in the mash. Does that sound ok?

Rhubarbcrumbled · 29/09/2014 18:09

Sorry kukesi... maybe I'll change for the rest of bootcamp! Thanks for advice on fat bombs. They sound foul then I read the recipes and thought surely not! I'm thinking one of those post running might do the trick.

So, a new name...hmmmm....

MrsGuyMartin · 29/09/2014 18:12

Crumbled here. For the purposes of bootcamp I've name changed!

kukesi · 29/09/2014 18:24

MrsMG I feel a bit shitty now, I was just jesting with you.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 29/09/2014 18:25

Ah but after your first fortnight you can have crumble...
feastwithoutregret.wordpress.com/2014/02/01/berry-crumble/

because a world without crumble is not a world worth living in
