Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The cheating stops here

StuntNun · 02/06/2014 06:33

Hello again and it's time for weigh in. The cheating seems to have edged up a bit in the last week so I want to remind everyone that cheating is a really bad idea and will hinder your weight loss. It's called Bootcamp for a reason. We only want ten weeks from you and the cheat foods will still be there at the end of Bootcamp. But for now no cheats please. Next time you're tempted remember it isn't the last scone/cake/wine in the world.

If you need a reminder or you're joining Bootcamp partway through, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can also track your weight on the Weight Tracker.

As promised last week I've written some info on the science behind diets...

How do we lose weight?

First, why don't low fat restricted calorie diets work? It comes down to homeostasis: our bodies actively resist change. For some reason in humans our resistance to weight change appears to be asymmetric, that is we resist losing weight much more effectively than we resist gaining weight. Most of us have experienced first hand the gradual increase in weight over time, or the more abrupt but still unshiftable weight gain that happens with pregnancy. Basically it's easy to gain weight but difficult to lose weight. So we go on a reduced calorie diet, eating 1800 calories while our bodies are expending 2000 calories. We may lose some weight at first but eventually eating 1800 calories becomes the norm and our bodies resist the change by dropping the metabolic rate to match calorie output to input. But, and here's the problem, the metabolic rate might drop to reduce calorie expenditure by 300 calories rather than 200 in order to regain the lost weight and get back to our normal weight. So weight loss stops, we get disheartened and quit the diet and our reduced metabolic rate allows the weight to pile back on and then some, just in case we encounter this artificial famine again in the future.

So what's different about a low carb diet? One of the key rules of Bootcamp is to eat when you're hungry. This works to prevent the reduced metabolic rate that scuppers a reduced calorie diet. When you start eating a low carb diet and you have exhausted your glycogen stores, the liver starts converting fat from your diet into ketones. Your muscles start using ketones and then adapt to using fatty acids for energy. Your brain uses ketones and glucose from your diet along with glucose produced from protein by gluconeogenesis. The low levels of insulin induced by a low carb diet allow fatty acids to flow freely in and out of fat cells. It is this free flow of fatty acids from your fat cells that allows you to lose weight on a low carb diet without restricting calories. Your muscles cannot distinguish whether fatty acids came directly from your digestive system or from your fat cells, they just use them up as needed. As you adapt to the low carb diet, there is a reduction in your appetite in response to the ready availability of energy at all times. A low carb diet works simply by allowing your muscles and liver to freely use fatty acids released from your fat cells.

Good luck for the coming week. Keep on keeping on.

Ooff back on plan today but eating all those carbs over the weekend has clearly taken me out of ketosis so I've got a headache today and am feeling tired and wooly. My own fault but it was unavoidable as it was a boozy weekend that had been booked for months and we were determined to have a blast.

Today's menu
B buttered scrambled eggs
L tuna in oil with salad and mayo
D mince cooked in butter with mushroom, pepper and courgette cut with a potato peeler into very thin strips. A little tomato passata.

As much water as I can stomach. Still feeling the effects of the alcohol I thinkBlush

KinkyDorito · 02/06/2014 17:20

If I weigh today after 5 days, I've lost 5lbs so far.

pingufan · 02/06/2014 17:21

Ooh and Aldi are doing a new line in tapas in the fridge section. Little spicy sausages and pork bites on wooden skewers all gluten free and

I'm going to log tomorrow's weight - I was down to 132 yesterday Smile but this morning the battery died before my weight had fully registered although it was flickering at 133. I tore the kitchen apart looking for replacements, then the bloody thing reset itself to kilos, fiddled about for 10 mins and finally got it back on lbs and was 136.7 not impressed

I was very good today and resisted all the goodies the head had brought in to get us through a boring inset day and declined chippy chips when some of the staff snook out at lunchtime but my god the smell memo to self they always smell better than they taste Grin

BIWI · 02/06/2014 17:42

Afternoon all! Thank you very much, StuntNun, for taking the reins over the last couple of weeks, it's much appreciated Smile Flowers

trashcan - great post keeps lips firmly zipped about the last two weeks

Welcome citymouse - and well done, KinkyDorito!

I hope everyone can stop cheating too! I have been doing this for 3 months and not cheated once - even when it's meant the only thing I can eat all day is a handful of nuts. I started off with 5-6 stone to lose, I'm in for the long haul. I love reading people's tips and discoveries, but not about all the wine!

And it those of you with less to lose could stop referring to yourselves as disgusting, it would be much appreciated- you aren't disgusting at 2 stone overweight and neither am I at 4 stone over. We have surplus fat, but that does not make us disgusting.

Anyway, I'm just baking Fay Ripley's Brie bubble and squeak, using celeriac rather than potato. Can't wait :)

sybsie · 02/06/2014 18:10

I am peeing like a racehorse. Sadly the similarity ends there. 3l and counting. One cup if tea only.

I have just saved myself from eating the kids' leftover fish fingers, beans and corn. Yippee. How much hidden stuff have I been eating?

Not tried the marmite fat bombs but can recommend marmite cheese. Like baby bel but with added marmite. It's currently on offer in tesco. Great for the handbag.

wombat22 · 02/06/2014 18:25

I am .5lb up today but it was expected as I had a night off on Sat. I am intending to eat this way permanently so it has to be workable. My clothes are feeling looser which i'm very happy about. I am looking forward to a good week and a hopefully a visit from the whoosh fairy. Thank you for the new thread Thanks and good luck everyone

lookingforhope · 02/06/2014 19:35

2lb back on today, but not surprised as had my redundancy-induced alcohol binge on Thursday, and wedding yesterday when all there was to drink was cider or Apple juice. Plus just been really down about work so probably comfort eating too much even though low carb foods! Happily though, my inch loss has maintained, and someone at work asked if I had lost weight today. Back on bc proper this week, with the addition of total yoghurt for added fat. Good luck to those yet to weigh in, congratulations to the losers and commiserations to the gainers.

Best1sWest · 02/06/2014 19:36

Will weigh tomorrow as forgot this morning.

I bought a new dress yesterday for DDs graduation next month. it's a size smaller than I would normally wear. It could fit even better with a few more pounds off so motivation to keep going. I am finding this easy though struggling with the water. 4 litres is a lot of water.

Thanks BIWI and Stunt and everyone else. I am finding the support so helpful. Thanks

Jimmy thank you Smile

Ive done previous bootcamps etc but I still even now find myself thinking 'I'll pay for this on the scales tomorrow' like just now when I had a bit more of the celeriac thingy I made for tea, cant help thinking my weigh in this morning was pure fluke Grin We shall see I guess! I haven't cheated at all, and Im making sure to drink enough.

Anyway hope everyones doing okay Smile

weaseleyes · 02/06/2014 20:35

I managed another 2lb today, which was a pleasant surprise. I was hoping to sts after my 2lb loss last week seemed to sneak straight back on again. However, I beat it back and managed a bit more.

I haven't eaten any forbidden stuff yet, and am largely still BCing rather than BCLing. I did find myself getting a bit bingey last week with eating extra lumps of cheese and some peanut butter, which felt odd and horridly familiar. It only lasted about 2-3 days, though, and I seem to feel a bit more stable again.

pudding25 · 02/06/2014 20:46

Going away for a few days and know there will be some drinking involved. What is the best alcohol to drink if I do drink anything? Was thinking vodka and soda water or a whisky? Thanks

readyforno2 · 02/06/2014 21:08

Will weigh in tomorrow. Didn't weigh last week as I was feeling horrendous and didn't make it to the personal trainer (where I have weighed from the start)
Hoping I haven't done too badly.. Had a wee gin wobble..

RunLikeSomeFeckersChasing · 02/06/2014 21:39

I'm weighing tomorrow. Had a bad day yesterday - DH had a vasectomy (he thought he was having a consultation and only realised when we were there that it was happening NOW) and I was stressing like heck and the wheels came off my wagon. Shit happens. Was really worried about DH but he is pretty good - came downstairs to find him boning a chicken tonight (at least that's what he called it).

So majorly on it today. Good day and managed a run. No headache so I think I may have got away with it on that side. Tomorrow will tell all on the weight front. Gulp.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 02/06/2014 22:25

Well after the BAD WEEK. I only put on a pound (yes, I know I might have lost more if I hadn't been lured into Tiger Lily) So back on it big time. And guess what, got the dodgy tummy like first week think whoosh, but not in a good way Blush hopefully this might help things even more. Another glass of water then bed.

spamm · 02/06/2014 23:32

Good day today, despite traveling again. Had quite a bit of cheese as I am struggling to get more fat in my diet, so I hope that is not a problem.

Cannot weight myself, no scales in my hotel room, so I will have to wait until next Monday.

B: bacon, eggs and grilled mushrooms, tea with double cream
L: bunless burger with cheese, and salad
S: 2 babybels and 1 Peparami, 1 coffee with splash of milk
D: salad starter, followed by fish with samphire, a couple of broad beans, and a couple of baby tomatoes

I have had 3.5 lts of water as well, so hopefully it all works out well.

linesandlines · 03/06/2014 00:11

Been meaning to say: BPC fans, this £1 milk frother from Ikea is ace. Looks dead flimsy but packs a proper punch for a really frothy, creamy BPC. Takes 2 AA batteries and for a quid, you could have one at home & at work. Saves washing the hand blender every time.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 03/06/2014 06:14

That looks great lines thanks for that! You could also take it camping [obsessed]

StuntNun · 03/06/2014 06:25

Cheese is fine for some people Spamm but stalls others. Or it can be fine when you need to lose weight but not when you're near goal. The only way to find out is to experiment.

pudding25 - vodka + soda + lemon/lime if you like
you won't put any weight on, calories in alcohol (I believe) are burned and never stored

IrianofWay · 03/06/2014 06:46

Hello, I am a returning LCer. Started Atkins in 2004 when my youngest was 18m old and I was like a basket ball on legs. I was 12 stone! I thought I was huuuuge. Lost a stone and got down to a BMI of 22. Gave up LC cos I got bored of it, started running and just eating sensibly and lost another half stone. Since then I've been through the menopause and been on ADs since 2007 and the weight has piled on.

Last year I bought some new shorts. Had to bite the bullet and accept that yes, I was a size 14. This years those shorts were tight. I decided I had to do something.

Started LCing (my own version) 3 weeks ago exactly at 13 stone!!!. I lost 5 lbs in the first week, 2 in the second and another today. Now I am offically 12.6 ! BMI 24.2.

Aiming for anything under 12 stone as a starting point.

sybsie · 03/06/2014 06:46

Morning ! I feel thinner already (am not though!) I swam for an hour yesterday, drank 3.5l of water, ate lots of salad and good fat and generally felt good. I hope it lasts.

Work today - easy for drinking water (hurray) but there is a half open box of chocs on the desk. I must give them away to avoid temptation. Am already looking forward to a nice breakfast and lunch al desko, plus I have a half hour walk across the park to the tube as a warm up for the day.

Have a great day everyone!

StuntNun · 03/06/2014 06:47

Not sure about that Antimatter, yes the alcohol is burned as a priority but everything else queues behind it so if you eat at the same time as consuming alcohol then you'll be more likely to store the food calories as fat. I wonder what causes a beer belly then? Is it the carbs in beer?
