Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

Have fab time Grin

ImSoOverIt · 20/05/2014 15:57

Thanks stuntnun - might ressurect that thread a bit!

If anyone here has had success with this woe, would be great if you could post on the thread stuntnun has linked to? Smile

Seri77 · 20/05/2014 16:55

I seem to have stalled. 0.2 on despite being awash in water over the weekend.

However Im just carrying on, I stalled last time on two separate occasions and then started losing again despite having tea with milk & cheese daily and weekly chocolate. I lost 12lbs last bootcamp and I'm only 1lb up on my finishing weight. Between bootcamps I was relaxed low carb though did have a few forays in to carbiness, most were not worth it.

I'm staying away from the chocolate this time, no cups of tea as it's too hot and reducing my cheese. Will see how I go. I've got at least as tone to go before I'm a normal BMI so I'm in this for the long haul.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/05/2014 17:05

Pound off here, as expected. Off to catch up with the thread

Locarblil · 20/05/2014 18:43

i've just made celeriac chips (in the oven now).

Please tell me they don't taste of celery? The celeriac smelt a LOT like celery while I was cutting it up!

petalsandstars · 20/05/2014 18:46

Lovely roast chicken leg and all the skin with salad and mayo for tea. Similar with salmon for lunch.

All good food and resisted the cake when I was out for coffee.

Hoping to have a good rest of week now. Does anyone else find it difficult cooking the carby things for everyone else? Like I should have them too.

ForeskinHyena · 20/05/2014 19:00

Locarblil, celeriac is much milder cooked, more like roast parsnips.

I find it's ok feeding carbs to the rest of the family if I have a substitute (cauliflower rice with bolognese last night, turnip dauphinoise instead of mash with lamb chops tonight).

I do miss pudding, but some strawberries and cream do the trick and I save it for when the dcs are in bed so I can savour it!

lowcarbforthewin · 20/05/2014 19:00

I'm on day 3 of no dairy and today I was so hungry. I think my body was just going 'where the fuck is all my cheese, I want my cheese.' Actually, it's more Greek yogurt that I've been eating each day. I think the drop in calories must have been quite large. Ended up having two boiled eggs for tea with some pesto, and now it's time for supper and really I'm still hungry.

Hoping a nice lamb steak and veg and a small bowl of strawberries will sort me out. I am in some ways feeling very deprived without the yogurt, but I keep telling myself to woman up because I can eat dairy again in a few weeks/months. Just desperate for a week to pass so I can see a loss and know this will be worth it.

Am very exhausted today too, so know that makes me much more desperate for carbs.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/05/2014 19:09

petals I do. And I know I should make things we can all have but do find it difficult. My two are teens and quite resistant to change, plus my DD has dietary advice about how to add carbs.

Am keeping on keeping on.

ImSoOverIt · 20/05/2014 19:51

I haven't managed to do the no dairy thing as I am currently eating a bowl of clotted cream!

I have decided it is really too much to give up my coffee with cream as well.

So I have decided for now just to try and manage without cheese, as it was probably eating way too much! Then I may look at reducing the cream. Smile

thereinmadnesslies · 20/05/2014 20:05

Catching up - I've lost 1lb this week from my start weight, but last week I gained two pounds so I've technically lost 3lbs this week.

I've found the hot weather really hard - I cheated and had a small ice cream at the weekend because I was so hot and cold water just wasn't cutting it. Does anyone have any suggestions for hot weather cooling treats?

Suzymoo09 · 20/05/2014 20:16

Imsooverit - in response: I am a slow slow loser - and I had a four week stall on last bc (which was my first) - I lose about half a pound a week - some weeks put on due to the totm. I have stuck with it since January and have lost 8 pounds so far - which isn't dramatic but it is quite a lot of weight and if I continue at this rate until the end of the year it will be over a stone. My image to keep me going is the tortoise in the story the hare and the tortoise. That's me!

costababe · 20/05/2014 20:34

Just checking in again to mark my place.
Still keeping on keeping on, have enjoyed a sugar free jelly with small pot of Greek yoghurt today, yum!
No breakfast
Lunch tuna and feta salad, very small amount of feta plus big dollop of mayo!
Tea prawns in chilli, ginger and piri piri
Small glass of white wine tonight, very enjoyable. But feeling woozy now!! Most unusual after one glass!!
Hissy hope your DS is improving and you are looking after your self.

lowcarbforthewin · 20/05/2014 20:38

Therein I would recommend getting some coconut cream, blending it with raspberries and toasted coconut flakes or toasted ground almonds and then freezing it. Tastes great. There are all sorts of coconut milk ice cream recipes online but lots have maple syrup or honey so you'll have to adapt them.

I used to eat frozen blended banana with nut butter and that is also delicious, but remember banana is really high in sugar.

Fruit waters are also quite nice. Get a glass of water, add lots of mint, some raspberries and whatever else sounds nice to you and bung it in the fridge for a few hours. Very refreshing.

Frozen berries to chew on are also nice. And I have sitting in my freezer some blended Greek yogurt with mango in it, with some orange blossom water, but I won't be eating that for now. Greek yogurt frozen with berries would be scrummy too.

IWillIfHeWill · 20/05/2014 21:01

Still in but finding the lack of weightloss this week quite miserable. Surprised to find that when I told myself I could go to the supermarket on the way home and 'treat' myself to icecream and forbidden things, I found I didn't want to go - wasn't hungry and had no desire to stuff my face with rubbish. That was quite pleasing.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 20/05/2014 21:02

Checking in! I'm really annoyed at myself about last week's eating and subsequent 2lb gain so I've made myself a spreadsheet (the solution to all problems is a spreadsheet). I can track what I'm doing and graph things and make myself happy [saddo].

I'm rather ashamed at the amount of processed meat eaten today:

B: BPC

L: salami and avocado salad with mayo, pork crackling

D: pepperami, coconut chilli chicken with grated courgette in butter, more salami and olives Blush

therein I'm going to make some standard custard based ice cream at the weekend but use spenda instead of sugar. All of the rest of the ingredients are low carb- cream and eggs. There's a recipe at the back of the IPD cookbook, I think. I have to say that for me this must be an eat in moderation thing but hopefully it'll slay the ice cream demons.

I rather fancy lowcarbforthewin's coconut ice cream too - dairy free!

spamm · 20/05/2014 21:39

Hello all. I am on my way back from my business trip, in the airport. Just bought some water and beef jerky to help me survive the flight.

Last night's dinner was hell - basically a pasta feast at a colleague's house for 30 people. I had salad, olives, meatballs and grilled chicken, and volunteered to drive so I could avoid the wine. I am not sure it was ok, but I certainly did my best.

Today's food:
B: scrambled eggs with spinach, and turkey sausage in hotel
L: chicken taco (without the taco) and lettuce, sour cream, cheese and avocado
D: some steak with courgettes and mushrooms in cream

I am doing weigh in tomorrow morning and am hoping for a pound or two, but I have no idea. I feel bloated but it is also TOTM so it may just be that! I am planning on sticking to BC for now and not moving to BC light yet.

Keep going everybody.

Best1sWest · 20/05/2014 21:48

1.5 lbs down which I am thrilled with. It was 3 yesterday but some seems to have gone back on. I am going to stick to bootcamp for a bit longer and might do über bootcamp. I haven't quite been keeping up with the water the last few days. 4 litres is a lot of water.

StringBeanJean · 20/05/2014 22:03

Hissy, big ((hugs)) to you and your DS.

Just swinging by quickly to say hi - this week a bit hectic so can't hang about, but am loving all the wonderful support in this thread.

And all the stallers - you are being so strong, please don't give up now. Read the success stories thread, tis a wonder for reigniting the LC fire.

2lbs off on Sunday, but now TOTM and feeling it - bet I've gained again but I'm going to be good and not get on those scales!

Locarblil · 20/05/2014 22:08

Celariac chips were lovely - ta FH for reassuring me.

Lowcarbforthewin - I feel your pain. Want dairy so bad. This WOE is a cinch with dairy, but miserable without. Will keep on tho. That ice cream might make everything OK!

I tried to like BPC but it's not for me, just like frothy black coffee. Coffee with cream is amazing though this has made me realise just how much cream I slosh in. Whoops!

EvaTheOptimist · 20/05/2014 22:20

Spamm you did really well to avoid the pasta.

SarahBeeny you may find that you don't need the splenda, your taste buds won't need so much sweetness now. Especially if you put in strawberries or raspberries.

WeShouldOpenABar · 20/05/2014 23:21

can someone clarify the creamed coconut vs coconut cream issue please

Thanks all, not to derail, but am surviving food wise, may pop out to get fruit etc tomorrow as there's bugger all of that on the menu for ds here.

Wobbling today, this situation is shit, I don't like it, or want it, it's so unfair.

But it is what it is, and all we can do is try our hardest to get to the other side.

In 10 years time (probably less) we'll have forgotten about most of this.

Sadly burns recovery is not linear, today was good, tomorrow may not be. That's why we have a never ending succession of doctors and specialists popping in to check, see him and how he's doing. Tomorrow's an important day.

Not really eating at all really, which is kinda wrong, but i'll be fine. It's still a drop in the ocean as I have easily got 4st to lose. I'll end up dropping weight, I know, but through lack not LC but that's fine, as soon as I can i'll be back on LC BC. I have pork scratchings, I have egg mayo, I have cheese. I'm doing my best to stick to it, but will confess to a wiggly worm and a couple of mini oreos. Am still trying to keep at it with the water, am managing 2l a day. Should be a little more than this.

I have a fridge full of stuff back home, i'm looking forward to being LC again, properly.

I'm rambling. Sorry! :)
