Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

A second week with no weight-loss. Angry

I did have an evening off last Saturday, for a family birthday, which may have something to do with it.

Clothes are feeling a little looser, though, and I know I'm a "slow and steady" person, so I shall keep on. I find this WOE so easy, particularly during the week.

GermanGirlinLDN · 28/01/2014 12:52

I am starving. Took children to an indoor play area today and forgot to take my protein shake. Hmm They don't sell anything else but sandwiches and I really really won't give in. I am drinking lots and lots of water to keep me full and looking forward to go to Waitrose in one hour to buy the snack prawns. Wink

Thumbwitch · 28/01/2014 12:56

Oh dear, I fell completely off the wagon today. Took DSs out to the zoo as it was the last day of school holidays for DS1, and it got bloody hot while we were there, waiting for the 2:30 "pat a wombat" experience. DS1 wanted an icecream, and I hate to say it but so did I. So I did. A split, too, which is even worse. Blush It was LUSH.
Plus I'd had half a banana - shared with both DSs, just could NOT bring myself to chuck it in the bin (fail) - which was annoying because I had taken on board the thing about bananas being The Worst Fruit and wasn't going to, but there you go.
To add to my transgressions - on the way back, passed a fruit stall selling glorious cherries and bought some - and then ate loads.

I expect repercussions tomorrow - but tonight I seem to be down a lb on my usual night-time weight so hopefully it's not too bad.

L = all the bad things as mentioned, plus babybel cheese and an ultra low carb protein bar
D = prawn salad - prawns heated in butter and garlic, salad = lettuce, cucumber, carrot, red pepper, grated parmesan, sliced olives and mini mozarella, with an olive oil drizzle. Boys had potato salad too, I didn't.

Back on the wagon tomorrow...

Piscivorus · 28/01/2014 12:59

Thumb we are only able to be sanctimonious as it is grey, cold and wet here so ice creams not terribly tempting and no wombats to wait for!

ChippingInWadesIn · 28/01/2014 13:15

Hi all - big , Kicks & Flowers as appropriate!! It's kind of all lodging in my brain what everyone is up to, but can't type replies to everyone!

Crabby - I will be there several times a week and getting 'take outs' to see me through the week, your cafe could not possibly fail Grin Do you fancy moving in here while DD is away?? No? Might have to settle for inviting myself over for lunch meeting up for coffee Grin

Thumbwitch · 28/01/2014 13:16
Grin

In some small recompense, I have discovered (through a level of necessity) that hard boiled egg mashed with Boursin makes a really nice filling for iceberg lettuce parcels - am just snacking on these now (Late night hunger back again, that'll be thanks to the sugar, I'm sure).

No point in kicking you - I'm sure you'll do that yourself when the scales are utterly vile to you tomorrow morning x

Mlig · 28/01/2014 14:08

This is the first time I've had chance to check in the week and I've filled in the spreadsheet for this week and last.. I'm gutted, I weighed Sunday and was looking at a 1lb loss which I was a bit disappointed about but accepting of, then Monday I weighed and had put on 2lbs, so after 2 weeks following it to the letter I've lost 1lb. That's it :-( I've been perfect the whole time, the only thing I've done slightly bad is eaten too many pork scratchings on Saturday, but they're still very low carb so it wasn't the big galaxy that I would have rather had..

Has anyone any ideas what I could be doing wrong? I've cut back on the veg, and either way I've only had the less than 3G per 100 anyway. I'm a big girl so have loads to lose. I know I'm in ketosis because I bought ketostix to check..

Lighthousekeeping · 28/01/2014 14:13

Anyone got a good Thai curry receive? I'm dying to make cauliflower rice!

WillieWaggledagger · 28/01/2014 14:13

oh dear

just to check, how much water are you drinking? ketostix, while an indicator of ketosis, shouldn't show a very dark colour with this WOE because you should be drinking lots of water so it will be more dilute. you need to drink water to flush out the ketones, as the body won't produce more (i.e. won't break down fat) if the concentration in the blood is higher than a certain level

are you eating enough?

are you eating enough fat?

the pork scratchings are salty, and while you do need enough salt with this WOE, it can make you retain water, which may be a factor

how do you feel in yourself? lighter, more energetic? have you taken any body measurements?

Mlig · 28/01/2014 14:21

The first ketostix showed no ketones, I did one a couple of hours later which only showed the first line up so still quite pale.

I'm really trying to up my fat content, especially in the mornings. And I am getting less hungry generally but I'm trying to make sure I eat 3 meals a day..

And water I need to have 4.5litres, which I'm struggling to get to every day, I'm having at least 3l daily, and up to the 4.5.

I was eating a lot of cheese but I've tried to cut right back on that too

I don't honestly know if I feel better in myself as I've caught a flu bug thing from the kids so feel like poo anyway, and I'm having a crap time with some stuff too which is making me feel really down just now, and I haven't measured yet because I lost my tape measure but I have one on the way. I'm not feeling as bloated most of the time but I'm not convinced I've lost any inches :-(

sansucre · 28/01/2014 14:30

Mlig You're not doing anything wrong other than worrying needlessly and saying you'll quit when you've not given this WOE any time to see real affects.
You need to give this some real time, complaining you're not seeing a loss after 3 weeks isn't giving this a real chance. Maybe if you're in this position and same weight after 3 months, then yes.

From what you've written over the various threads, you've tried and failed many, many diets, so I imagine quite simply, your metabolism needs to totally reset itself.

Remember, everyone is different, so stop comparing yourself. Concentrate you and not on how other people are doing. And try to remember the best way to lose weight is slowly and steadily at 1lb per week; it will stay off.

All I can do is advise that you stop fretting, STOP WEIGHING yourself and being fixated by the numbers. Instead, measure yourself and use this and if your clothes fit different as the real gauge.

Apologies if you think I'm being harsh, I've always opted for touch cop rather than good cop in matters like this. Personally, I think you're doing really well - you've not only lost a little weight but most importantly, you're sticking to this WOE - good for you!

So, to recap, stop worrying and keep doing what you're doing. And please, stop obsessing over the numbers on the scales!

captainmummy · 28/01/2014 14:43

echoing what willie and san have said - stop fixating on the numbers. It is only one way of monitoring this WOE - measure yourself (when you can) and reassure yourself that this WOE is healthy, sustainable and going to help!

I remember a poster a few BCs ago who lost in the first couple of weeks, then nothing for weeks! She loved her food so kept going, and it did come off. Sometimes, as san said, you need to give it a reall chance - if you have tried many diets, your body is not going to react as others do. You need to get back to a normal WOE first.

Please keep going, it will help. Keep a food diary - write it on here if you like so we can see if there is anything awry.

Re ketones - I said upthread that they are a waste of money. If you are keeping to low-carb veg, and drinking, you will be in Ketosis.

captainmummy · 28/01/2014 14:44

*Re ketostix I meant!

daisychicken · 28/01/2014 14:44

Daily Fail has done it again...., how not to do a low carb diet www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2546975/One-twin-gave-sugar-gave-fat-Their-experiment-change-YOUR-life.html surely they realise giving up all veg/fruit is not a good thing?!

Mlig · 28/01/2014 14:49

Sansucre, I have not said I'm going to quit. I posted asking for advice, as I was under the impression that this forum was offering advice on this way of eating. I, like most from what I've gathered have started this way of eating as means to lose weight as is essential to my health and I recognise this. I asked for advice as I assumed I must be doing something wrong as I haven't lost weight when sticking to it 100%. Your post didn't come across as harsh, it came across as downright nasty when I was simply posting asking for advice, as like I said I was under the impression that that is what this forum was for. However if I'm wrong about that I'll be sure not to post again. Thanks to those who were supportive and good luck to the rest of you,'z

Post for advice Miig we are all doing this together, I'm sure the comment wasn't meant to be unkind, just don't stop asking, that's really important.

I have a Q...

Upping fat can be using olive oil instead of butter, yes? I'm one who thinks dairy can be a brake on weight loss, and I'm finding the butter a bit claggy iyswim?

Daisychicken Weirdly am looking at a recipe you commented on, thinking of doing tomorrow garlic chicken Will sub onion for shallots, and do the cream at the end.

popsnsqeeze · 28/01/2014 15:01

Well, DH dropped out over the weekend. He was doing really well, lost about 11 pounds. But his work is really high stress at the moment and he said he's just hungry all the time. I think that if I had sent him to work every day with a packed lunch, and a couple of snacks, then he would have stuck to it. But I'm just not that kind of wife! He was taking in leftovers from the night before but it just wasn't enough.
Hard for me though, he lay on the couch next to me last night munching crisps!

Did anyone read that article in the mail about a program that is on tonight about low carb versus low fat diets? Interested to hear anyones take on it. I'm not in the UK so won't be watching sadly, but still interested.

giraffeseatpineapples · 28/01/2014 15:13

On the twin article - its not rally a fair comparison if one twin gained an extra 5 stone in recent years anyway?

Mlig I didn't see sansucre's comment as nasty, was trying to encourage you towards the end. Must be really dissapointing for you though when low carb has a reputation for rapid weight los, maybe do it for another month then if still no loss you couyld get your bloods checked for mineral deficency or thyroid?

WillieWaggledagger · 28/01/2014 15:17

pistey, butter isn't included in the easy-on-the-dairy (provided you have no other allergy/intolerance) as it's practically pure fat, but if you're feeling sick of it by all means get the fat in other ways. there are things to suggested heating olive oil isn't a good idea because it becomes trans-fats, so you can use coconut oil instead if you can find it / like it, but i don't worry too much if i have veg roasted in EVOO every now and then because i like the flavour. also raw in dressings is fine

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/01/2014 15:22

Ah, ok, thanks Willie - maybe I shall just go for a mix of the two. Not really that fond of butter and my kids keep thinking I'm making flapjack when I'm cooking with it, and then are like this --->>> Sad Sad

Maybe I should actually make flapjacks for them?
