Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

mlig i read sansucre's post differently to the way you did, so please don't take it like that, it is meant supportively and encouragingly

the thing is, this WOE is not likely to help you to lose weight any faster than any other diet overall. some people lose 12lb in the first couple of weeks and then might have weeks and weeks of no loss or even slight gains, so the average for them over a long period of time is 0.5lb per week, which is good and sustainable. others might lose less earlier but more steadily. it's not a race, either

i realise you have a lot riding on this, and that is adding to your disappointment at not seeing losses that other people have, but Your Mileage May Vary is always the way with this, and giving up after a few weeks is not going to make you any closer to your goal

other than sticking to your knitting , have you previously had any investigations re thyroid, diabetes, other hormonal imbalances etc? however, it may just be that your body is very confused and needs some time to get used to the WOE (and if it's anything like mine, the reassurance that you're not going to be withdrawing food from it for long periods of time). are you very stressed with other things going on in your life? are you sleeping ok?

all these things can upset your body's delicate systems and mean it doesn't react the way someone else's does. obviously don't blame yourself for these things, but do be kind to yourself and your body

WillieWaggledagger · 28/01/2014 15:31

is wool low carb? apparently so. it is mostly protein and at 26% dirt. i assume that is straight off the sheep rather than in a scarf

silk looks excellent, nearly all protein so very low carb

but both would need butter (or lanolin??) added as they are not high fat

daisychicken · 28/01/2014 15:43

ratherbe that recipe was lush! Problem with making flapjacks and cakes for rest of the family is you want to test the results... well I do(!) I bake a huge batch once a week, twice at most for lunchboxes & have to be very firm with myself.....

Tonight I'm doing meatballs in "gravy" aka cream with a dash of Worcestershire sauce (might add crushed garlic as well) with mash swede & cabbage plus carrots for the carb-eaters.

CalamityKate · 28/01/2014 15:50

I ordered a julienne peeler and it arrived this morning. I also bought courgettes.

I have no idea what the famous courgette spaghetti tastes like but the peeler was worth the money for the entertainment value alone. This is the most fun I've had with vegetables EVAH! Grin

StuntNun · 28/01/2014 16:24

Mlig it's difficult for you when you have a lot riding on this and you see other people are having big losses. If it's any consolation I only lost a pound the first week and none the second but as I have been low carbing for a while it all went slightly to pot after Christmas then I'm happy to stick with it to try and get the scales moving in the right direction again. Did you measure your waist before you started the WOE? Or do you have any tight clothes that you can try on to see if they're a bit looser than they were before? I lost weight very erratically last year with a stalls that lasted a few weeks then a sudden drop so I would definitely say it's worth you continuing for a bit longer. Have you tried using My Fitness Pal or a similar app to work out your carbs and calories for a day? I was quite surprised when I did that as I found out I was below 50 g of carbs that day so it was reassuring to know that I was in the right ball park for weight loss.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/01/2014 16:50

Arf at my low carb wool Willie. Who knew?!

Grin

And clearly I need a julienne peeler Calamity. I am ENVIOUS of the amount of fun you are having with your veggies!!

Grin. Again!

Oh I need to do my measuring. I've talked about doing it. I even have a tape measure! Tomorrow. I do it tomorrow. Definitely.

HumphreyCobbler · 28/01/2014 16:51

Also Mlig, if you have been ill that could mean you are retaining water in a serious way. I also find it I take painkillers it stalls me.

CalamityKate · 28/01/2014 17:23

Rather - yes. Yes you do. Everyone does. I truly believe that the answer to world peace is to supply everyone with a julienne peeler and a large pile of courgettes. Happy days :)

Anyway I sautéed them in butter, added a dollop of Philly, a glug of cream and then sprinkled the whole gloopy thing with Parmesan. Oh. My. God. Totally delicious. They didn't make it to the plate; I ate them out of the pan while I waited for my pork chop to cook. Next time I'd make more - one courgette doesn't make quite enough. I actually think I prefer it to spaghetti - very mild flavour that carries other flavours but the slight taste that IS there is really nice too. Carbonara at the weekend I think! Only I'll lightly boil them for the rest of the family rather than sautéing.

ElBombero · 28/01/2014 18:03

Know you shouldn't daily weigh but I just can't resist at moment as everytime I jump on it's more good news. A stone in 22 days! And I had a weekend off in the middle of that for a do. Just love this way of eating, but anyone else finding they just can't sell it? It's like trying to convert someone's religion!!

Lovecat · 28/01/2014 18:09

Good evening all :)

Mlig it is very easy to get disheartened when everyone seems to be losing weight but you, you have my sympathies. If you still see no shift this week, do you think it would be a good idea to try the 3 day fat-fast? It's meant to kickstart your metabolism if you're having problems losing, and I know some people have had very good results from it.

There's a good link here, which states how important it is NOT to do this if you're just stalling, rather than failing to lose weight altogether on this WOE, which sounds like what may be your problem.

Everyone in my office at work is some form of diet. However my lunches always look the tastiest and least stingy.

Colleague opposite was sat there today with salad leaves and wafer thin ham, she was starving. I was busy tucking into three large slices of cold pork, grated cheese and salad, with a large dollop of mayo.

I did offer to share GrinGrin

Lovecat · 28/01/2014 18:23

And now back to shouting shit... :o

I had an unusual day yesterday, moussaka for breakfast as planned, then a BPC, then I just wasn't hungry. DD was off sick so I was running round after her a lot, then when DH came home I had to go out and deliver something, so by the time I came back I was ravenous. DH announced he didn't like the look of the moussaka that I'd asked him to heat up, but (as he doesn't do cooking), he said he'd ordered a takeout, but not to worry, it was low carb.... it was kebab meat and salad. I have no idea how carby it was - it was certainly greasy enough (and sadly rather nice...)!

Today was a little better but I've just been picking at stuff. Loads of water, pate and celery and several mini-crustless quiches. Tonight will be the Jamie's 30 minute meal scallop thing with cauli egg fried rice and pak choi.

sueh95 · 28/01/2014 18:51

Calamity carbonara mmmm I will definitely be trying that!

Not weighed in today which is good for me. Scales banished to a different room.

B 2 boiled eggs & mayo
L leftover curry from freezer with a small dash cream (just using it up)
S boiled egg & ham,mayo
D griddled chicken breast marinated in oil & spices, celeriac mash, butter

probably a bit light on water again bit I've got time to pull that back before bed (actually looking at meals, a bit light on veg too!)

Started reading Dr Briffa's book last night for even more reassurance that this WOE is they way to go

tummyrumble.hultberg.org/2010/03/roasted-chicken-with-chorizo-on-a-bed-of-root-vegetables-and-cabbage.html

I made something along these lines tonight, but with cauliflower instead of cabbage. It was amazing.

NellVarnish · 28/01/2014 19:06

Had a busy day yesterday and didn't get a chance to MN (grrr) so I'm here to record my measly 1lb loss this week. I don't feel too despondent though as I've been very good, so am sure it will come off eventually.

Going to read the rest of the thread and see how you've all got on.

Love the graph! It's amazing! As is the spreadsheet.

ElBombero · 28/01/2014 19:24

Does anyone know what this programs called that's on tonight then?

Got a lot of catching up today - already on page 9!

Today

B Total yogurt with cream
coffee
L left over bolognaise with courgettes
D chicken & mushrooms cooked in butter with cream, lemon juice, chopped coriander & lots of salt! This was yummy , with salad, avocado, coleslaw.

really enjoyed my food today.

NellVarnish · 28/01/2014 19:43

A julienne peeler you say? I want one. Where did you get it Calamity? I want to have fun with my vegetables!

Mlig it's horrible when you've been good and it you don't lose anything and I totally understand how you're feeling. Been there, done it. But sansucre was just trying to help you - we are all here to encourage and help each other.

Agree that the thread moves so quickly I can't remember who has posted what and by the time I've scrolled through, the thread's moved on and the moment is lost. But I'm reading avidly and taking notes, and enjoying the support. Thanks

Well done to everyone this week whatever result we've had - at least we've been trying. Here's to a better week to come for all of us. Smile

It's tomorrow 9pm. BBC2.Horizon

Thanks

This WOE has transformed my palate. I had the best tea ever.

Portobello mushrooms stuffed with tallegio, topped with garlic butter wilted spinach, crispy bacon and parmigiano regano shavings.

A-mazing. Perfect mix of salty creamy tastiness. Yum.

trashcanjunkie · 28/01/2014 20:18

Evening shit shouters Grin here to spout some more of my own...

B - god it seems a hundred years ago since this morning... what the fuck did I eat again Hmm oh yeah, lidl greek yoghurt and some ham on the bone

L - two fried eggs, couple of rashers of bacon, (fried natch) and some courgette dauphinoise (which is THE TITS by the way)

S - some bits of turkey and some roast salmon slices with some mayo and three olives I ate before realising they were off. Bleaurgh.

D - still not managed it. I was cooking an oxtail from frozen in some ham stock on the hob. It's taking ages and smells rank and has gone like rubber. It's still going and I think I might feed it to the trash hounds. It's shopping day tomorrow. I may just resort to a kipper in a bag with some fried kale.

Oh and is any one else freezing? I am now starting to warm my bottles of water up on the bloody radiator in an attempt to stop the second ice age. I got out a bath I'd ran (as hot as humanly tolerable as I was freezing from the innards) and nearly passed out with the heat. Ten minutes later I am cold again! And it doesn't help that I've spilt water on the bed and am having to dry the duvet on the radiator.....

Anyway rant done. Loving the whole thread.

BIWI · 28/01/2014 20:24

Mlig

This is the first time I've had chance to check in the week and I've filled in the spreadsheet for this week and last.. I'm gutted, I weighed Sunday and was looking at a 1lb loss which I was a bit disappointed about but accepting of, then Monday I weighed and had put on 2lbs, so after 2 weeks following it to the letter I've lost 1lb. That's it :-( I've been perfect the whole time, the only thing I've done slightly bad is eaten too many pork scratchings on Saturday, but they're still very low carb so it wasn't the big galaxy that I would have rather had..

You say you've been perfect, and then go on to say that the only thing you've done wrong is to eat too many pork scratchings. There's absolutely nothing wrong with eating pork scratchings - they do not contain any carbs. This makes me wonder if you really 'get' what Bootcamp is all about? You should be eating plenty of fat, and then lots of protein, so pork scratchings are perfect low carb food!

Has anyone any ideas what I could be doing wrong? I've cut back on the veg, and either way I've only had the less than 3G per 100 anyway. I'm a big girl so have loads to lose. I know I'm in ketosis because I bought ketostix to check..

If you're only eating veg under 3g per 100g then I doubt that you need to cut down. For us to have any idea how to help you, can you post your meals over the last few days?

The first ketostix showed no ketones, I did one a couple of hours later which only showed the first line up so still quite pale.

You don't need the ketostix! If you're following Bootcamp rules, you will be in ketosis. And if you're drinking the water you should be drinking, then the ketostix will only show a really pale colour change any way.

I'm really trying to up my fat content, especially in the mornings. And I am getting less hungry generally but I'm trying to make sure I eat 3 meals a day..

Both of these statements strongly suggest that you're not eating enough fat and you're not eating 3 meals a day^

And water I need to have 4.5litres, which I'm struggling to get to every day, I'm having at least 3l daily, and up to the 4.5.

If you need 4.5 litres, then you should be drinking 4.5 litres! You're not following Bootcamp properly if not. And water is really important for weight loss.

I was eating a lot of cheese but I've tried to cut right back on that too

No harm in this, but unless you know you have a problem in dairy, it might not be something yo have to do. But without knowing what else you're eating it's hard to comment

I don't honestly know if I feel better in myself as I've caught a flu bug thing from the kids so feel like poo anyway, and I'm having a crap time with some stuff too which is making me feel really down just now, and I haven't measured yet because I lost my tape measure but I have one on the way. I'm not feeling as bloated most of the time but I'm not convinced I've lost any inches :-(

If you're poorly and having a stressful time, which it sounds like you are, then this will not help either. It releases the stress hormone called cortisol, which can impact on weight loss.

And it will only add to the evident stress you're feeling under by being so obsessed about the scales!

I can only add to what others have said, and say to you - kindly! - please don't obsess so much about the scales. Relax and enjoy your food.

But as I said, list out your meals for me and let's see if there's anything obvious we can spot.

Flowers for you.
