Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

I'm craving blueberries. These are my treat, in total with vanilla sprinkled on.

It's sooooo nice.

I've not eaten chocolate in three weeks. This is weird.

Piscivorus · 01/02/2014 22:44

I love cauliflower pizza but drawn the line at corned beef hash in any form (bleeurgh!) I discovered last week that mashed celeriac, although it isn't starchy like potato will bind enough to make fishcakes which are lovely

Have just been out to an engagement party but ate before we went so I wasn't tempted by crisps and peanuts, drank gin and slimline so not too bad.

Who was it asked about running? Can't remember so shouting my shit to you all. I do not run, I very reluctantly do very little exercise with a personal trainer once a week and am not good at it but I still, after 18 months of low-carbing, go dizzy if I eat my normal egg-based low carb breakfast. After some discussion with BIWI on a previous bootcamp I have introduced either 1 small slice of wholemeal bread with my eggs or I make a low carb pancake and have it with yoghurt, berries and a sprinkling of nuts or seeds and find I am now fine.

Thumbwitch · 02/02/2014 02:20

I like the idea of the cauliflower pizza but tend to draw the line at cooking anything in the microwave. Have only just got one again after a 3 year break (only use it for defrosting and reheating, usually under duress). Can you get the same effect steaming it?

Yes, lowcarb Sunday - back on the wagon today. I have satisfied the cravings by having the small amounts of those things and now I don't feel the need for them again.

I will be making the parmesan stuff though - I do have a recipe for parmesan crackers, but it has flour in it - I'm fairly sure the flour is utterly unnecessary though so could just do that if I can't find the recipe upthread

Not going to venture down the nut pathway. Any time I turn from sweet stuff to nuts as a snack, I ALWAYS put weight ON. ALWAYS. Shame, because I love almost all nuts (apart from peanuts and macadamias); but they are a bad snack for me.

I don't think the mascarpone thing would work for me - one of the problems I'm finding is that I'm a little "over-cheesed", which, despite me being a complete mouse, is making me feel a little too "fatty". Now I can have fruit again, it's easier for me (no more bananas, promise!) but I was having troubles finding something noncheese to eat as a quick snack.

Today so far:
Still no breakfast, I really find that hard.
Lunch - mince and cream cheese roll, cherries.
Dinner will be barbecue and salad; I'll be making potato salad for the gang, but wondered about making swede salad for me? will give it a go and report back. :)

Morning Brew

Up early as always, taking my DD to rowing, this am she is subbing in an Imperial College eight. She hasn't been so nervous for a long time, but rumour tells there will be ex Olympians in the boat. Tis bloody dark here in Putney, all I can see are giants moving around in the dark, and DD who now looks like a rabbit in the headlights. Arf!

We are then off to Chinese New Year up Big London.

No idea what we will eat today, so far have had a cuppa tea. But with the joys of inter webs on phones am doing online food shopping, and have ordered cauliflower to try this pizza, and corned beef. I had corned beef hash in the States recently, came with some breakfast thing and it was lovely.

Have a good day all :)

StuntNun · 02/02/2014 08:26

The scales are stubbornly refusing to budge this week so I don't have high hopes for weigh in tomorrow but it's my TOTM. Does the water retention go when it starts or when it finishes?

Ruprekt · 02/02/2014 08:37

Drank Cava last night. Twas lovely but am going back to Dry February now. SmileSmile

SayraT · 02/02/2014 08:44

Morning everyone, off into work today (boo) but two of my friends also need to be in so we will go for a coffee/lunch and take advantage of seeing each other.

Very impressed at how much I don't want to eat any sweets/chocolate/etc. This weekend my OH has had a packet of crisps (a massive family packet), two vanilla crowns, a packet of wine gums and a huge bar of chocolate. I haven't wanted any of it even when he offered me some. I do hate him though, he eats shit like this and is only 9 stone (5ft 9 ish).

Had a wee sneaky weigh in this morning and I hope it doesn't change by tomorrow because I was 2 lbs less than last Monday Grin I love this WOE

B: Slice of fried halloumi and coffee with cream
L: Left over ox cheeks and celeriac mash
D: Chicken with asparagus in a creamy sauce on courgetti

Hope everyone has a good day.

DurhamDurham · 02/02/2014 08:57

Stunt my water retention doesn't go until my period is over...which means I am bloated for one whole week every flippin monthHmm

StuntNun · 02/02/2014 09:25

Thanks Durham that's what I'm hoping for as I STS last week and probably will this week. Then again I'm close to goal now (28 lb gone, 6 lb to go) so I would expect weight loss to be slow. Also my DH keeps doing things like serving roast potatoes with flour on to make them extra crispy Confused so I suspect carb creep is a problem for me.

googoogoggles · 02/02/2014 09:35

Morning all! Brew On my first coffee with cream.
Sneaky weight in for me, too. Those pesky scales reporting same pesky two pounds back on again when they'd gone a couple of days ago. Possibly carb creep (had a tiny glass of white wine last night and three squares dark chocolate and some strawbs in ff total) but in my book that is all good stuff and hardly a complete pig out...
Out to lunch today and no idea what's on the menu, so will try to BC all next week.
Have a good day y'all.
At least the sun is shining where I am (Norf london) so Grin

BIWI · 02/02/2014 09:35

Cure for water retention is to drink more water! It's true. Grin

Thumbwitch - you could steam the cauliflower easily.

Going for dinner tonight at my dad's Smile - not seen him since the beginning of December as he'd been in South Africa so it'll be good to see him. Smile

He's serving us a pasta dish (no doubt one from the freezer) Hmm with wine Hmm and dessert Hmm. I'm going to try to "load up" with water all day Grin

ChesterDrawers · 02/02/2014 09:57

Morning all, lovely sunny day here so were off for a walk at the beach.

Food wise, the plan is:
B: poached eggs, bacon, mushrooms
L: will be out so may just have a coffee with cream
D: got beef shin in the slow cooker with stock, courgettes, leeks, a shallot, to serve with swede mash and cauli cheese

Will try to drink lots of water but will be hard being out and about. So good at this in the week but it all goes to pot at the weekend.

trashcanjunkie · 02/02/2014 10:47

Morning all. I didn't get to bed until four am this morning. Busy work day and then a last minute booking to take a foreign student today, so felt I had to do a major spring clean. Couldn't begin till 11pm! Angry and have more to do before they arrive at some point today.

I had dreadful heartburn whilst cleaning. What is going on with my stomach acids I do not know.

Anyway, had yog n cream and a peppermint tea so far, and have started on 1st bottle of water.

wanders off in odd clothing to scrub wooden floors

CrabbyWinterBottom · 02/02/2014 10:51

Morning all. Smile

BIWI I do get the (very) occasional flash of a good idea! Grin

Notso aha, I thought she had that spitz shape. She's gorgeous! My sympathies with the fox shit - crazy cocker is a roller, but thank fuck the foxes don't come into the garden. The dog sleeps in our bed so I would be incandescent with rage if she needed a bath at 11pm! Shock Angry

LittleMiss I've just got that book from the library, so shall definitely be trying those.

Daisy I couldn't agree more. I spent Friday morning chanting "it's low carb not bloody no carb!" At my friend while she made this Hmm face. Angry

BIWI that pizza looks gorgeous, am going to have to try that one this week I think. I like the sound of Daily Fail haddock too thenight.

Sarah glad to be of service! Grin

Food yesterday
Too many cups of tea
L - bubble and squeak with crispy bacon
S - berry crumble with clotted cream
D - steak with celeriac mash and a mushroom sherry sauce
P - more crumble with clotted cream Blush
Too much wine for the second night running. No bloody willpower whatsoever. Hmm

Kefybaby · 02/02/2014 10:57

I have a cold, feel bloated and I am struggling to motivate myself to have yet more meat-cheese-cream-yoghurt. I want someone to make me a nice veg dish I have not tried before. Boohoo!

Thumbwitch · 02/02/2014 10:59

Thanks BIWI.

I'm pleased to report that "potato" salad made with swede is excellent - in fact I like it better than potato salad! Hurrah. Shame I then "blew" the day by having a glass of fizz or three with family who came round. God it was a great day though! Their 3 DC and my DS1 get on so well, it's brilliant. But yes, alcohol = not sensible.

TOMORROW! All will be strict as.

Oh and I made parmesan crisps too - used lupin flour instead of normal flour. Anyone got any useful ideas about lupin flour? It's meant to be good for low GI/ high protein diets, which is why I bought it - it was only 1 tbsp of it anyway, cos I did half the amounts below.

If anyone is interested in the recipe:
200g grated/shredded parmesan
2tbsp flour (lupin flour in this case)
2tbsp olive oil
Fresh ground rock salt to taste
Other seasoning - can use chilli flakes, herbs, seeds, whatever

Preheat oven to 190 deg C and place a greased baking tray in to heat.
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, rubbing the oil in with fingers until the mix is dry and crumbly.
Put spoonfuls of mix onto the baking tray, patting them together (I make fat fingers, but you can do rounds if you prefer)
Bake for around 10 mins, until golden brown, and then carefully turn over and bake for another 3-4 mins.

They are delicious. I'm not really sure what the flour is for, tbh, so probably could do without it entirely if lupin flour is a no-no.

LittleMissDisorganized · 02/02/2014 11:27

Hi all,
Busy day here today, nausea still hanging around Hmm - gets better when I eat, and PT negative, thank goodness.

Last couple of days have been consciously a little higher in carb as a trial for the sickness and it's not made that much difference. So no more nuts from tomorrow, treats only, and no more sweet potato.

Am I eating enough fat? I'm a bit worried I've got the ratio protein=fat:carbs which won't work, will it? Always something to worry about, honestly [eyeroll emoticon]
Can I post my Fri and Sat food for suggestions??

B: yogurt/cream/spoon of flaxseed/ vanilla concoction
L: the day I was sick - so not sure I kept much down, but had 25g of mixed nuts as a snack
T: few sweet potato fries, lemon and pepper turkey steak, small serving of yogurt (tummy felt really odd so I just went with instinct, maybe not a good instinct)

3L water (but I had to drink some of it twice, got it all down though) and NO coffee because it was vile on the way back up 1/2 hour later

Then Saturday B: 2 chipolatas, 2 rashers bacon (in olive oil), 1 1/2 scrambled eggs in butter
L: almond puff pancakes with butter and cinnamon (40g almond flour)
T: lamb leg steak with 1 tsp mint sauce, pureed creamy buttery cauliflower, buttery spinach, and 2 squares 85% chocolate

Today I've had yogurt for breakfast, some mixed nuts after early service at church (all that singing made me starving!) and am planning the rest of the turkey and salad and oily dressing at lunch and the awesome taco bake (has mince, cajun spice, cream cheese, creme fraiche, leeks and grated percorino in) with my friend who is arriving to stay and am making chocolate tarts with almond pastry and I am going to enjoy some!!

Just shouting my stuff - but Thumbwitch thank you for the swede suggestion sal well done and trashcan tell more about the heartburn (only if you want to/ have time).

jill36 · 02/02/2014 12:43

Hi everybody. Can I join in please. I have been following for the last 4 days.
Is it also ok for me to tag my name at the end of the Feb 3rd spread sheet.

CalamityKate · 02/02/2014 12:52

I'm going to change the way I weigh.

I generally weigh once a week but I do find that I fluctuate SO much on this WOE. I was heavier this morning but I could well have been at my lightest 4 days ago!

So I'm going to weigh every day but only record the lightest weights on the calendar.

Piscivorus · 02/02/2014 12:58

Lovely day here too but I have still got that kind of cough which can lead to retching or almost passing out not going for a walk on the beach as am not chancing too much cold air.

Had a good fry up for brunch but may have to cheat a bit later as DH is cooking the big lasagne left in the freezer from Xmas and New Year, I can't be arsed cooking anything else but we'll see how I feel later

goodasitgets · 02/02/2014 13:09

The thing that helps me drink more water is having a bottle with me everywhere. So if I'm driving, I have a swig every time I'm at a red light
I don't actually struggle with water at all, I can do a litre in a spin class Grin

Breakfast - crispy bacon, 3 scrambled eggs done in butter
Off to food shop then to the gym with a friend for some weights
