Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

I reckon, if you can get the base sufficiently 'dry', they would never know it's not 'real' pizza.

I'm going to have another go at it tomorrow - was going to do it for my dinner as I'm all on my own tonight, but we have no mozzarella and I can't be arsed to go out.

Gerry I really don't know what you're going to do at a pizza party! Hope you're there already and enjoying it.

Holmes BIWI recommended a book, something along the lines of "the art and science of low carbohydrate performance" - might be worth a read? The only thing I can guess at is drinking more water - that flushes out ketones so that more can be made, and its ketones your brain uses when it can't use glucose.

Gatorade and Trashcan" you are doing brilliantly, those are great losses. It is going to come off Slowly. But Surely*. (For me, 3 stone off took 8-9 months)

Thumbwitch there is a wagon waiting here for you to hop back on! How about a no-cheating Sunday resolution for tomorrow - 1 day where you definitely only eat low-carb? This is like breaking any addiction. I think those overcoming drink problems don't tell themselves "no more drinking ever" they say "I am not going to have a drink today"

EvaTheOptimist · 01/02/2014 18:41

I'maTot if you really want a takeaway can you make it a curry? saag paneer, or other veg side dishes involving spinach or aubergine? There are meat-based currys too I'm no expert there. Just no rice and naan etc?

EvaTheOptimist · 01/02/2014 18:49

BIWI I'm amazed by the powers of cauliflower - you can make rice AND pizza with it! (I've never tried the famous cauliflower rice). Fantastic-looking pizza.

DH cooked dinner today and he's not that fluent in the veg carb counter... so I had a kipper cooked in lots of butter (great) with carrots, butternut squash and half a roasted onion! Oh well...

HeirToTheIronThrone · 01/02/2014 18:51

I've been to my local pub to watch the rugby and discovered they have a 'skinny burger' on the menu - basically no bun and no chips but lots of salad and coleslaw. The guy was a bit Hmm when I added cheese but it was delish! It's a Greene King place so good sign that LC is becoming a bit more mainstream I think!

capsium · 01/02/2014 19:00

I often look up the menus at local places for lunch. Prezzo's and Pizza Express have some delicious BIG salads, with hot chicken and bacon on etc. If anyone makes a comment I tell them how sizeable the portion is.

Just don't eat the dough balls, no hardship to me. Always look better than they taste, bit tasteless to me.

I drink sparking water or a bottled strongish lager, if not being so strict, as strong lager is quite low carb (the sugar turns to alcohol!). Then for 'desert' I order, sometimes off menu but not often refused, coffee with cream- yum.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 01/02/2014 19:21

Crabby I'm now using your fabulous trick! I normally read on the phone though and that's half the trouble - you can't even see who entered the post you're reading, never mind anything else. And, yes, I am definitely a camel. (But I will be testing that I'm not a diabetic camel next week - there's no point in pretending that "it can't happen to me" Smile)

Holmes It's taken me 3w of LC to even get out for a run and I feel like I'm wading through mud. BIWI and other keep telling me that it'll normalise and I believe them! I am colder than usual after running but I used to get that on a standard diet also.

Jake I haven't read Briffa because some of the stuff on his website makes my piss boil. I like Volek and Phinney and Peter Attia's Eating Academy blog. It has to be said that the blog isn't at all accessible but I like the way he looks at research.

Which leads me to Horizon. I didn't watch it, again, I have better things to do in an evening than boil. But seriously, two people! It's likely that that there is a small minority who loose better on a low fat diet anyway, how do we know the twins' DNA wasn't set to that make-up? (See Peter Attia - and yes, I'll shut up about him now).

The BBC don't know the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack which tends to make me a bit sceptical regarding anything else they come up with.

I hope you are all having a more interesting evening than me - OH is on nights so I'm home with the kids.

B: total, masacapone, about 50g raspberries, 6 almonds
L: 3 egg scramble with mascapone, shallot, tomatoes and mushrooms. 1 square Lindt 85%
D: Meatball bake (meatballs, tinned tomatoes and shallots, cream and philly on top with emmental), salad, mayo.
S: one decaf coffee with cream and one cup of tea with milk.

I think I'm on about 5l of water/fruit tea but I've been for a run so will try to get another litre in the evening.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 01/02/2014 19:23

(yes, loads of dairy. I'm cutting that back if the scales haven't moved on monday!)

BIWI · 01/02/2014 19:28

holmes sorry, I missed your posts. Dehydration could very definitely be the cause of your brain fog, and you really must be careful about exercising if you think you are dehydrated. Surely you can make sure that you have a drink before you go for a run? How much are you drinking during the day?

Gatorade - if you started at 17 stones, then you should be drinking 4L of water a day - it really is important, which is why it's a rule of Bootcamp! But 6lbs is also fantastic. Don't compare yourself with other posters - it isn't a competition. We all lose differently.

BIWI that pizza looks amazing - on my list for next week. As is celeriac hash

Not had anywhere near enough water today. And have just poured a glass of wine so doubt that's going to change.

Food has been:
B: cloudy eggs, mushrooms in butter and bacon fat
L: chunk of cheese, four Parmesan shortbreads with slices of butter on top Grin
D: rump steam, swede chips, mushrooms in creamy sauce

So pleased I didn't cave into carb cravings after last night. Wagon firmly mounted Grin

holmessweetholmes · 01/02/2014 19:51

Right - more water needed then. Maybe I need to put a regular reminder on my phone or something. I tend to find that I don't remember to drink much early in the day, then struggle to fit it all in in the afternoon/evening.

BIWI · 01/02/2014 20:02

What do you do when you get up in the morning? Surely you have a drink of something then? If you don't, then make sure that you do!

OP posts:
holmessweetholmes · 01/02/2014 20:16

Yes I have a bit of water when I first wake up, then usually a cup of tea. I don't think I could drink much more before my run. It may be more the case that I'm not really drinking enough generally over the whole day/evening, so I wake up with more of a deficit than I can compensate for in the short time before I go for my morning run iyswim. I need to spread my water drinking out, I think.

SteeleyeStan · 01/02/2014 20:18

It's the first time this year I'm having alcohol (no intentional dry January or anything), and DH is busy playing Skyrim, so I'll just shout more shit here...

I drank to thirst (ie wasn't forcing any down) yesterday and measured how much that was, and evidently I now drink 3.75 litres a day. Not counting coffee and tea. The BC instructions for my weight are 3 litres, so I guess it's a bit individual how much you need? If I don't drink a lot, I get dry lips and dark pee quite quickly.

Foods today ended up being:
B: Fried eggs, cucumber, green pepper and coffee with coconut oil.
L: Mini pepperonis, green olives (no allergic reaction, yay), cheddar and cucumber.
D: Pork chop with butter, spring onion and mustardy mayo, and fresh baby spinach.

And of course several gins with mineral water. It's a lot nicer than G&T. The last time I had some with diet tonic it was so sweet it made my jaw ache.

Blush

I'll just go drink some water, shall I...

teaandthorazine · 01/02/2014 20:18

Evening losers!

Have just scarfed a delicious takeaway. Green chicken tikka, sag paneer, mushroom bhaji. Did have a sneaky onion bhaji and a bit of mango chutney but am not going to beat myself up about it! Plenty of water too. The scales were down this morning, which I'm super chuffed about, and it's reminded me just how easy and flexible this WOE can be. They may be up again tomorrow, but I'm feeling really positive and not at all deprived Smile

Off to Lidl tomorrow to stock up on low carb goodies. Sorry for shouting shit, must start doing the 'two screens' thing!

monkeyfacegrace · 01/02/2014 20:20

Im having a takeway too- kebab meat and salad Grin

StuntNun · 01/02/2014 20:45

What is the justification for the water quantities BIWI? I understand water is essential to the woe but surely the amount required is going to change with the temperature, amount of exercise done, quantity of caffeine or salt consumed, etc?

BIWI · 01/02/2014 21:00

It's from another low carb site, here StuntNun.

I keep reading up on the reasons behind it, and then promptly forgetting why Blush

Yes, it will obviously change according to all those factors as well.

here is one explanation

Interesting day here, started off with bacon, egg and sausage. DS had a birthday party to go to at a soft play and I had a tiny bit of cake Blush. The birthday boy's lovely parents then bought us lunch at bloody pizza express of all places so I had a salad nicoise (and half a dough strip) which was nice.
Had a takeaway curry for dinner - chicken Shashlik, mushroom bhaji and spinach dish. About to have frozen berries with total and cream.

thenightsky · 01/02/2014 21:31

Well the smoked haddock with celariac and spinach gratin was bloody gorgeous and filling. DH managed two portions and he's not even low carbing!

I have just eaten my dinner and you rotten lot are making me want a curry, it all sounds lovely! (not that I'm actually hungry, thanks to the Power of Fat...:o )

Today's breakfast was Lidl yog with cream and 2 strawberries thinly sliced - it was so nice! 2 scrambled eggs with a slice of prosciutto mixed in for lunch, then tonight we had lamb leg steaks fried in butter and garlic, with sauteed leeks in cream and swede chips. Bloody gorgeous :) DH was jonesing for some diet cola (he loves the stuff) and has bought a big bottle of Coke Zero. I had a sip (I used to love it) and I really wasn't that bothered. Which is great! So I'm going to try a gin and sparkling water (thanks for the tip, Steeleye ) and have some more ordinary water.

Looking back at that, I think i need to be eating more greens...

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 01/02/2014 21:48

I had my pizza, it was shit, and I now look like I'm carrying a full term dough baby.

Lesson learnt, wont be doing that again!

ladygagoo · 01/02/2014 21:55

I had cauli pizza tonight. DSS and DH were drooling at my chorizo, mushroom, mozzarella and stilton toppings whilst they had a frozen supermarket pepperoni effort.

It was amazing (I did wring out all the water first). Definitely having that again. Followed by total with cream and a drop of vanilla extract. utterly lush dinner. Do it.
