Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

Has the no career been told to drink loads of water??

DurhamDurham · 29/01/2014 21:14

That was meant to say the low carber!!

teaandthorazine · 29/01/2014 21:16

So I guess this woman has never heard of gluconeogenesis.

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 21:22

Yep very frustrating re no greens, no water etc. kinda wish I was in New York though bet eating out was a breeze

Ruprekt · 29/01/2014 21:39

Biwi......you watching? SmileSmileSmile

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 21:42

Anybody watching?! Live watching a program with a live thread running, where is everyone!! X

Ruprekt · 29/01/2014 21:47

I am here! Getting cross though.

teaandthorazine · 29/01/2014 21:50

Hmmm. Interesting how Xand's dodgy insulin response is completely contrary to pretty much everything I've ever read about the way LC affects insulin resistance Hmm

PrimalLass · 29/01/2014 21:55

Wish he would stop waving that doughnut about.

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 22:00

Oh. My.

HumphreyCobbler · 29/01/2014 22:00

just turned back on to the last ten minutes

meh

DurhamDurham · 29/01/2014 22:01

So after an hour what have we learnt? That donuts are to blame!!

Who knew Shock

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 22:01

To the insulin response. What's that about??!

teaandthorazine · 29/01/2014 22:02

So...basically...don't eat processed shite? Gee, thanks, doc Hmm

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 22:32

Mmm food for thought, would like more debate with this really but your all been quite tonight. Need to do more reading xx

EvaTheOptimist · 29/01/2014 22:40

LittleMiss WELL DONE on 19 alcohol-free months. But I'm sorry you've been miserable about recipe-experiments that didn't work out. I've nearly done 9 alcohol-free months - I'm strictly not allowed to drink it on the medication I'm on - and no end in sight for that. My DH used to have a drink problem and he's now done about 13 alcohol-free years!

Really disturbed by the Horizon programme so I'm going to refresh now and find out what you all thought about it!

arselikekylie · 29/01/2014 22:44

The bit about insulin bothered me. I hate the thought that I'm putting myself at risk from diabetes. Might re-intriduce wholemeal toast for breakfast but stick to low carb rest of day.

EvaTheOptimist · 29/01/2014 22:44

So how come the low-carber increased his insulin resistance and became MORE at risk of diabetes? I don't understand.

He DID lose more weight though. Even if some of it was muscle. I cannot believe I've been losing vital muscle - in fact I've been uncovering previously smothered muscles! Surely the fact that I've lost 3 stone (over many months) means I'm LESS at risk of diabetes? I really hope so. I started that programme hoping my mum and SIL were watching and now I hope they weren't!!

ElBombero · 29/01/2014 22:47
Hmm
GermanGirlinLDN · 29/01/2014 22:51

Which program are you talking about?

giraffeseatpineapples · 29/01/2014 22:56

It was surprising that sugar is ok. I guess the documentary didn't give the full picture, how much was it turkey roll and burgers vs fuit and veg? They didn't give precise results either, other than weight and muscle.

Arse I would only introduce toast if its not a domino food where you will then crave it all day long. I can't eat one piece of toast but i struggle with a whole bowl of porridge. You could have veg berries and nuts instead of toast for sugar and carbs?

EvaTheOptimist · 29/01/2014 23:02

Horizon - was 9pm on BBC 2. One twin ate low-fat high-carb for a month. The other one ate low-carb high-fat. (To be honest he ate NO carb - no vegetables. I feel our version is much better).

Some irritations like the low-carber doing less well at a brain test (perhaps he isn't as clever!? I must say I feel clearer-headed on this WOE). Also a really intense exercise test - they hadn't eaten for 12 hours, then cycled for 1 hour, then had a pat of butter/glucose tube then raced up Box Hill. Not really surprised Mr Glucose won that, he must have felt rocket-powered. But I don't think that mimics the usual sort of activity or exercise of most people.

At the final reckoning Low-carber had lost 4kg and low-fat-man 1kg (something like that) it was a mix of fat and muscle lost for both. But low-carber's insulin resistance had gone up and low-fat-man appeared to be fine on insulin. Though he was "now better at producing insulin" which the doc seemed to say wasn't necessarily good for the long-term,

Perhaps it was just HIM they did say you can't do a scientific test on just one person.

They ended by saying food which combines fat and sugar is the really bad stuff and v. addictive.

giraffeseatpineapples · 29/01/2014 23:09

They weren't identical either, the low carber was heavier at the start and possibly the slimmer sugar guy exercises more.

CiderwithBuda · 29/01/2014 23:19

I thought the horizon programme was quite interesting. Low carb def came out at being more filling - he ate less calories at lunch. Def seems to indicate that for energy and to stay healthy some carbs are needed. Which we know . We have carbs in the form of veg. I'm reading from it that protein and fat keep you full but I will have more veg and poss not worry about higher carb veg.

Losing muscle mass is worrying as is the insulin response though.

trashcanjunkie · 29/01/2014 23:21

God I felt fucking annoyed with the program. Basically, apart from dp who's doing this WOE with me, and the excellent people on this thread - I AM NOT DISCUSSING/DEFENDING WHAT GOES INTO MY BODY.

Piss off all judgy cunts.

And one man does not a scientific study make. And they didn't look in great nick to begin with. And they didn't look at long term effects either properly imo. What about the damage sugar does in the long term? or it's affect on mental health? or addiction. Gaaah!

Anyfuckingbastard way

Todays menu -

All the water in somerset
peppermint tea till my tears were peppermint flavour

B - scrambled eggs/bacon/mushrooms/tomato

L - roast chicken/olive/avocado/mozzarella

D - belly pork/fried in butter kale/purple sprouting broccolli/aubergine in cream

Dp who joined me a week last monday but fucked up his sugar withdrawal TWICE finally managed his third consecutive day. He was very low mood almost to the hour of three days and then brightened considerably once over the threshold. His mum is considering joining us but I told her to watch the stupid Horizon program. Bah and humph
