Don’t have anyone to sign passport

I really want to take my children abroad but don’t have anyone to do their passports. Has anyone been in this situation and what did you do? (Don’t need any suggestions of who can sign it I’m aware and have looked through the list but don’t have anyone that can do it) is there anything else that can be done if you’ve been in this situation?

Not what you’re asking and I hope the passport office is helpful, but won’t you need your dc’s father’s permission to take them abroad?

You're annoying.

Scroll on by then. I’m asking if anyone has been in this situation and what they did or if there is anything set up for people in this situation.

Not on bc.

Do you not know anyone who has known you for 2 years? A friend? A neighbour? Your boss? The “person of good standing in their community” category for counter signatories covers pretty much anybody or everybody.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/03/2025 16:18

Sorry, I don’t know what bc is.

civilmars · 23/03/2025 16:18

There are often requests on our street WhatsApp group for this

Comedycook · 23/03/2025 16:19

Op..this is so frustrating to read.

Do your DC have friends? If so their friends may have parents who could do it? They are in school in classes of I presume 30 kids...do none of those parents fit the bill? Do you have family? Obviously relatives can't sign..but do they have any friends who know you?

Katrinawaves · 23/03/2025 16:20

There is no alternative to having the passport application countersigned. Therefore if you are unwilling to have this done your children will not be able to travel abroad until they are adults and can apply on their own behalf for a passport (assuming they are not also unwilling to ask someone to countersign it).

This is not a question of you literally not having anyone who knows your name and can recognise you for more than 2 years and fits the criteria. This is about your own social anxiety and unwillingness to ask people you maybe don’t know very well to do this. That’s up to you but then you and your children will have to live with the consequences of this.

There is no one that can do it I said im not asking for suggestions as I know there is no one who can do it I’m aware of the list and aware who can sign, I don’t have anyone to sign. I was only asking if anyone had been in this situation and what they did, but it seems the only people responding are those who haven’t been in this situation then getting annoyed at me? 😕 I’m not asking your advice I’m asking for advice from people that have been in this situation and if there is any alternative set up for people who have no one to sign.

Well I suppose the alternative would be to not get a passport, if you're not open to all the many suggestions made above.

Do you honestly have no human contact with anyone? Not even have a GP?

MichaelandKirk · 23/03/2025 16:20

You sound quite testy. People have made some suggestions and you keep pushing back saying you don’t know anyone in the whole wide world. No friends, no other parents. Just no one??

UpsideDownChairs · 23/03/2025 16:20

Yes, I was in that situation having lived abroad, and knowing no-one in the UK when we moved back (child travelled on a different country passport)

But you said you didn't want suggestions on who to ask, so I'll not talk about what I did.

Yes. Lots of posters claim to be in this position regularly. They insist they know nobody who can sign, then refuse to answer questions about the occupations of all the people they know who could sign. Lots of people give them additional examples and they then go silent never having confirmed if they have actually tried any of these people.

Do you really have no relationship at all, even just saying hi at the school gates with a single other parent or not a single one of them has their own passport and a job that gives them "good standing?", which isn't the same as the examples on the list? Is there nobody you've ever worked with you have any contact with?

Birth certificate

joanofaardvark · 23/03/2025 16:22

How did you get your passport?
This is a problem solving exercise. To be honest, if the only people that know your children well enough are school, can I kindly suggest you try to build a bit more community for them? That’s probably more pressing than a trip abroad.
Equally I would work on ensuring your defeatist attitude doesn’t rub off on your kids.

DoubleFantasy · 23/03/2025 16:22

What do you want people to say?? ‘You’re fucked then? Of course you can’t get a passport without a signatory. There is no way round it. No one will have been in this position because most parents will have taken their kids to the dentist, optician, GP , health visitor, midwife, school, nursery etc at some point.

If those aren’t an option you can pay the Post Office, a bank official to do it.

You keep shutting it down, but I’d have a chat with your favourite teacher and sweet talk them.

I understand that but ive said countless times there is no one, you don’t think ive though about every option? There is no one and ive repeatedly I’m not looking for suggestions of who can do it I KNOW who can. I’m asking if you have no one to do it are there any options.

She is right that GPs are no longer valid counter signatories unless they know the patient in a personal capacity.

BlueBurys · 23/03/2025 16:25

HundredPercentUnsure · 23/03/2025 16:23

Yes they only do it if they know you personally they are not allowed to do it anymore new rules came in about it.

Maybe in the past but they are not allowed to anymore as I’d happily pay.
