having been singin Heaven 17 to myself reading this an d reminiscing...

"Looking back it's so bizarre
it runs in the family
all the things we are
on the back seat of the car
with Joseph and Emily
we only see so far

  • and we all have our daddy's eyes
looking back it's so bizarre"

Then realising after singing the whole back catalog that of course its actually Level 42

Kewcumber · 04/10/2008 19:50

having eaten non-stop virtually since aboty 12.30 until about 4pm I actually feel not so hungery at the moment. Was considering not having dinner but some 10pm it may be a differnet story...

Had to make myself a cheese sandwich and hot choc at 1am the night before last

rosmerta · 05/10/2008 08:12

Morning all, looks like our indian summer has passed us by!

We've got church today, then we're off to order a bed for ds & then swimming. All indoors stuff you notice!

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend

sfxmum · 05/10/2008 11:09

well I went for a run with my support team following on the bike, we all got thoroughly soaked it was great fun
although they gave up half way through and were having hot chocolate when I got home

hope everyone is having a nice Sunday

we have Ratatouille to watch

btw slng congratulation on the bike now you can look leisurely about town, does it have a basket?
one day I will learn how to ride a bike

OP posts:
slng · 05/10/2008 14:05

Hello!

We went for a swim and got very wet, not entirely because of the swim.

sfx - bike looks like this. No basket (yet) but looks slow enough, I think.

Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 20:40

OK breadmakers - how do I make whilemeal bread actually rise ratehr than sit like a brick? I tastes find but difficult to make sandwiches with bread the consitency andshape of a brick.

I made whlemeal rolls ahile ago which seems fine but now have no recall whatsoever how I did it.

SLNG follows your easy white loaf form the guardian (two stage approach) but that doens't seem to make any differnce

sillybigsausage · 05/10/2008 20:50

Can't help with any advice about cooking!

bunyanvillas · 05/10/2008 20:55

Well of course I am the last person to proffer advice on cooking - but Kew, do you need to get some different yeast?

Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 20:57

is just sainsburys quick yeast which I thought was adequate. Am wondering if I should be adding Vit C which I gatehr is a bakers tirck with wholemeal to lighten it.

(Bunyan - almost cinvinced you you knew what you were talking about but not quite...) am holding out for Cov, SLNG and SFX

sfxmum · 05/10/2008 21:04

no expert but like bunyan said it seems to be due to yeast not working properly, is it old, is the water too hot? also how sure are you of the oven temperature?

COV and slng are better at this than I am

OP posts:
sfxmum · 05/10/2008 21:05

and vitC seems to be a must with wholemeal bread

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 21:18

yeast is new but yes water might be too hot (didn't know it could be too hot so quite possible!)

Oven temo pretty hot which seems to be what they recommend - athough thinking the problem is at the rising stage not the cooking - bread is not doubling in volume befre cooking. perhaps try vit C next time with cooler water.

sfxmum · 05/10/2008 21:21

hot water kills the yeast it has to be warm but not hot think one part boiling to two parts cold or there abouts

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 21:24

ah yes too hot tehn - I pour a kettle of boiling water into a jug and waft some cold over it in an unscientific fashion.

slng · 05/10/2008 21:30

Kew - don't kill yeast! Cooler better than too hot - just takes longer. I do about body temperature, slightly warmer. Vit C recommended in the guardian guide too. But what I do usually is half white half wholemeal. Is that cheating?

Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 21:33

not cheating slng cos I nromally throw in a bit of white too. Actually I bought a "malty" flour mix form able and cole and used that so its not quite wholemeal and it would probably be delioc is it were more bread-like.

OK seems its hot water. will try cooler next weekend.

sillybigsausage · 05/10/2008 21:37

Convo about recipes skims swiftly above head...

Just discovered I got free Doors Strange Days CD with my Sunday Times

sfxmum · 06/10/2008 09:55

all this bread talk reminds me I have to make some for dd1's Victorian trip on Thursday - they have to take a pertaining packed lunch (bread and water!).

Had a very successful week last week - dh and I (and LOs) fell in love with Holly Bush (and another property but the wrong location) so its all systems go. We're going to put our house on the market and we'll be moving, hopefully, early next year (once we sell our house). He haven't put an offer in yet but have told them we are really interested. For those [nosey] ones of you its here - oh and Kew we went on the windiest day of the year so far and it was remarkedly warm inside.

Kewcumber · 06/10/2008 11:08

send her with bread and dripping MrsR! She can have some of my brick bread if you like - much more authentic.

House looks lovely though am surprised that its only three beds - seems a big house fro only three beds. (and where will you put the guests? )

slng · 06/10/2008 11:26

MrsR - house looks very nice indeed. When are you moving in and when's the house-warming?

Surely even Victorian children get a bit more than bread and water in between being sent up chimneys? I have very little patience with "re-enactments" ... We went to a parents' evening in school and they showed us a video of their "learning" - kids dressed in white t-shirt being white blood cells pouncing on kids dressed in green t-shirt with a sash proclaiming "germs". I'm afraid I get very exasperated at things like that ... But shall keep my mouth shut. After all, what do I know about "learning"?

Kewcumber · 06/10/2008 11:28

where there any platelets represented SLNG? Am very keen for schools to show diversity in their teaching...

sfxmum · 06/10/2008 11:30

house look lovely mrsR what a huge garden does it feel good to make a decision?

someone stop me I have been cleaning my windows
dh said something about channelling George Formby, think that it is too Lancashire for me to get it

looks sunny should take child for daily walk

OP posts:
slng · 06/10/2008 11:38

Kew - no platelets. Or red blood cells or haemoglobin. Very white-blood-cell-supremist.

sfx - stop cleaning your windows! Come and clean mine instead. Channelling George Formby? Is that some sort of rhyming slang?

MrsRecycle · 06/10/2008 11:54

thanks for the offer Kew - forgot about dripping.

The house has a lovely loft conversion that is 75% complete so it'll be dds bedrooms and a bathroom. ds' neighbours will be sheep (that he loves at the moment). That leaves a "guest" bedroom with views of Rye - form an orderly queue!

We have great plans for turning the garage conversion into a 2 bed holiday home as well. Plus, big garden as you say sfx so plenty of space for tents (could be the start of a music festival!)...It feels wonderful sfx - just know we have made the right decision.

slng- forgot about them having to dress up as Victorians as well - what an earth is she going to dress up as?

Silly - don't mean to ignore you! I'm seeing Dr Tif's colleague on Thursday - when are you off to him?
