Yes it's in one of the main main streets of Hamilton - the equivalent of being in Bond Street in London. It's called Queen Street. And all the kids call it KFC street.

Am glad to see you have such classy eating establishments on your equivalent of Bond Street

I used to only have DKNY underwear. Many moons ago.

anorak · 25/02/2008 01:48

Yes you go into a shop here and ask for something and they say, we have ordered some and they will be here when the boat comes in.

anorak · 25/02/2008 01:52

Yes we only have a few non-Bermudian stores here. And only one branch of each. We have KFC, DKNY, Body Shop, M&S, Gap, there's a Louis Vuitton shop, maybe one or two more that I can't bring to mind and that's it.

No MacDonalds, no Walmarts, no nothing.

anorak · 25/02/2008 01:54

We have petrol stations with Wild Bean Cafes though.

dooneygirl · 25/02/2008 02:04

I'm thinking the whole no McD's, Walmart thing is a good one.

Glad to hear DS is doing better, Cali.

Our children's museum here is awful. There were 2 that were better down south in nowhereville. Ours is old and run down in the worst way, and really expensive for what you get.

Now I'm not grown up enough to understand shoes. I like shoes, but would never pay that much money for a pair. I got a lovely pair of boots that were over $200, but got them on clearance for $50. I seriously don't get Christian Louboutin, and mostly don't get Manolo Blahnik. I love the sound of lots of purse shops, though, except for if they're all cheap and yuckky.

UnderRated · 25/02/2008 02:09

I think it's great not to have lots of international stores. I hate that my mum, sister and I all live in different countries but can buy exactly the same clothes in the same stores, 1000s of miles away.

I remember seeing Body Shop in Antigua. Was very strange.

dooneygirl · 25/02/2008 02:33

Ok, here's my rant.

We have this boy across the street and a couple houses down that has come over here since he was 4 (all by himself) and asks to play. He did this almost every day, and some days was over here for hours at a time. There have been at least 8 times that I know of that his parents haven't had a clue where he was, 2 of them during a very severe storm. I'm guessing there were probably many more times that they didn't know where he was, but he wasn't here long enough for them to wonder where he was. He started school this year, and it has been great, he's not over nearly as much because he goes in the morning, and Colin goes in the afternoon 3 times a week. After seeing him play in the street all day, he just came over with his 3 year old little brother and asked to play. I told them it was too late, and they've both been playing out in the street since.

UnderRated · 25/02/2008 02:40

Where are the parents?

dooneygirl · 25/02/2008 02:47

Y'know it never happens when the dad is there. I know when he's home, because he comes and stands on the sidewalk while the little boy comes over to see if he can play, and then asks me if I'm sure it is okay. He works Sun-Thurs, so I'm sure that is where he is. DH and I make a joke about having a "(his mom's name) face, and then stare blankly at the wall with our mouth open, and pretend drool is running down our mouth, because that is all we can figure out that she does all day.

He's a very polite boy, but I have a hard time liking him, because he never laughs or smiles. You can hear his little brother crying all the time. I by no means think they're doing anything remotely like abusing him, or being mean to him in any way whatsoever, but they just make me .

UnderRated · 25/02/2008 02:57

Not abusive perhaps but a little neglectful. I would like to think that I will always no where DS is. And if he disappeared for hours, I'd be out searching for him. I'd be devastated if he wanted to spend so much time with someone else and us not return the favour

expatinscotland · 25/02/2008 03:21

We're set to come home over October break.

I wish it could be sooner. DD1 and I could.

I never got passports for DD2, was too ashamed to tell my dad. That I needed the money. He'd done enough for us already. He'd got DD1's, which expires in September this year.

I need to renew it.

Fuck, she'll have to go to Edinburgh.

Another place I left behind a pile.

Can I ever truly leave a place? I'm starting to wonder.

I always thought spirits who haunt places before they even die are such pathetic losers.

I should have known better, than to discount myself among them.

'When are you coming home?' ask my two best frieds.

'Since I stop denying who I am. Since I stop inhabiting the shell I am. Since I start living and stop dying.'

Since you're gone . . .

jabberwocky · 25/02/2008 14:03

Dooney, that's so sad about the little boys. I had a similar situation years ago with a little girl on our street before I had children. I thought it was very strange that her mother let her wander around like that. I started calling the mother and saying " Little X is over at my house. I didn't want you to worry since you probably didn't know where she was. It's fine for her to stay and play for an hour and then I'll make sure she gets back home safely." She really was a sweet little girl. Can't imagine what her mother was thinking

jabberwocky · 25/02/2008 14:12

Ds1 loves the children's Science Museum. We got a season pass when we were buying our new house and took him every day. They have an indoor man-made "cave" that he can't get enough of. He even drew a picture of the inside of it and the rope bridge, etc. The museum framed it and hung it He was over the moon

dodgykeeper · 25/02/2008 14:53

What a shame for those boys. I spent hours and hours over the last few days standing in the front garden watching my dcs play in the snow just incase.. The sight of my two having so much fun gradually lured another 11 children outside to play but I made each one go back home and tell their parents where they were. I would go nuts if I didnt know where mine were. Eventually I paid the teenager a few doors up to stand and watch them all and retreated inside. One of our lovely neighbours brought out a vat of chili for them all as they showed no signs of tiring of the cold and wet. So my children were fed and entertained, I had no mess to tidy up and everyone was happy and safe - a perfect afternoon

re bags: I used to use a flight bag from my luggage set when the dcs were little. It had loads of compartments, good strong straps and it was built to take a bit of abuse. It was a pretty plum coloured one from M&S but Im sure you get nice ones here too. Keep the proper bags for yourself!
PS choose a gender neutral design then dh can carry it when he is around!

Oh, okay then. At least nobody is here, and it isn't that people are pretending to be crickets chirping and trees cracking in the wind so they don't have to talk to me.

UnderRated · 27/02/2008 18:46

Boo!

dooneygirl · 28/02/2008 02:10

Hey, OR. Oops, I mean UR. I think I found someone that is as obsessed with recipes as I am.

dooneygirl · 28/02/2008 02:29

I just realized it isn't the recipes, it is the listing of meals that you are into. My bad.

Feel free to ignore my musings. Had about 5 hours sleep over the past 3 nights.

Hi does anyone know what the rules are regarding bringing over the counter medications (cocodamol) from the UK to the US? Is it illegal? I know you need a prescription here in the US for it, but my parents are coming to visit and are bringing me some, as it's cheaper for them to do it as Drs visits/prescriptions are bloody expensive for me here! Hopefully they won't have it confiscated.
