Ok, I am not getting all the love for this pizza stone. It is no better that the one I had when we got married that was cheaper. And I don't understand wanting to make cookies on it as it is smaller than my baking sheets and would require more batches. It is a nice pizza stone and I don't hate it by any means, but:

Can someone please enlighten me as to what I'm missing????????????

Thank you.

Sorry, I've never used one so can't say why everyone loves them so much. But, they really seem to so there must be something there. Will ask next time I'm around a stone aficionado.

jabberwocky · 23/02/2008 01:20

btw, what is a hob?

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 01:25

it's a stove, jabberwoky

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 01:26

some people may also call it a cooker.

in the US it's a stove or a range.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 01:31

don't use a stone on the hob!

NO!

that is how i lost the beloved Pamper Chef stone i'd had for many years and brought over here with love.

i only just now got a replacement.

if you want to use similar on the hob, for your griddle cakes, Welsh cakes or what have you, either get a cast iron pan OR if you have an architectural salvage yard near you, find the lid to an old wood burning oven/cooker and put that on top of your burner and use that.

How was the baking, Califrau?

I need help with bag shopping. I need a nice bag to cart around with us - it needs to be big enough to contain spare clothes for DS, water bottles, snacks, cell phone & other random things that end up in a mummy's bag but not be mumsy. Any suggestions? And it must be relatively inexpensive. I exhausted Nordstrom Rack, Filenes and TJ Maxx. Where shall I look?

I'm watching Forest Gump and am in tears

dooneygirl · 24/02/2008 05:01

Garage sales in really nice neighborhoods. I wish I could send you my crazy purse lady where I got about 1/2 of my purses (mostly brand new) for $25 or less. I got a really nice faux-croc big Liz Claiborne bag there for that much with the tags still on it, and use it as my diaper bag and it holds everything.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out places for you, but can only come up with what I know is local to this area. Will sleep on it.

UnderRated · 24/02/2008 05:07

Thanks Dooney - I did think of you earlier when I spotted a rather lovely pink Dooney & Bourke bag. It was $200 so I put it back pretty sharpish. No point spending much on a bag that will hold DS's things. It's a shame because he'd have loved a pink bag.

Let me know if you have a brainwave

dooneygirl · 24/02/2008 05:11

Do you have Kohls? Was there a few weeks ago, and they had some cute especially for the price purses. DH says have you gone to Ross? I was looking some up on the internet and by accident (yes, it really was an accident) found a site with Prada, Fendi, and Bottega Veneta purses. DH says I have to stop looking for purses now.

Califrau - I am not grown up either but want to be - I think I want a nice leather looking not black one. I currently have a canvas stripey thing that someone gave me or a freebie ENfamil one - neither of which have any street cred at all. Kohls is a good idea - I'll habve to make a trip out there. We don't have Ross (I don't think). Perhaps I shouldn't have asked about purses on here - it was probably rather insensitive, given your bag habit, Dooney. Sorry for getting you in trouble!

Hope DS2 is ok, Califrau and that your DH was able to get back before there was anything else to clean up. Emetephobia and children is not a good combination is it? Must be awful for you.

jabberwocky · 24/02/2008 19:10

Califrau, that's awful Hope your dh gets back soon.

As far as bags go, I have had really good luck so far at consignment shops. Also, and you may laugh at this, but I've found a couple of nice looking ones at Wal-Mart when they get their summer beach type bags in. I'm carrying one right now and it's not summery at all. It has red faux-leather trim and a nice red/black/tan design.

jabberwocky · 24/02/2008 19:11

x-posts, Cali. Glad your ds2 is feeling better.

UnderRated · 24/02/2008 23:49

Oh Califrau Hope DS is much better and you can relax tonight.

No Mervyns or Ross here and Walmart is out in the 'burbs so I'll try Kohls and Target. Will have a peek at the Walmart website actually - your bag sounds like the type of thing I'm after Jabberwocky.

dooneygirl · 25/02/2008 00:08

Saw your thread earlier Cali, but was getting herded out the door as I read it. Sorry your DH was out today. Hopefully DH is home now. Glad DS is doing better. Poor guy. Poor mummy.

I don't know if the purse thing is a grown up thing at all. Probably some sort of shallow thing. In my defense, I'd never heard of Dooney and Bourke less than 2 years ago. It was that darn crazy purse lady and her evil garage sales that sucked me in. You didn't get me in trouble, OR, he was joking. I can look all I want, just as long as I don't act on it.

Jabberwocky had a great brainwave with the consignment shop thing, too. The 1 thing I miss about living in Southern Oregon was this amazing consignment shop that was about 30 miles away from where we lived, but in a town that had the most to do down there, so we visited every few months. It was in a town with a very high standard of living, let's say, and they had a bunch of great, hardly-used stuff.

Do you still have Mervyns there, Cali? All the ones I know of in the state have closed down and turned into Kohls.

We had fun today. Daddy planned a day for us at the science and industry museum. Not only do they have endless displays with buttons to push, they have a separate area for the under 6's that the kids could (and have)spend hours in. And to top it all off, their special exhibit this month was dinosaur bones and fossils from China. You don't make Colin much happier than that.

Museums with buttons are great. We live right by the Museum of Science and Industry which has tons of buttons and flashing lights was well as a real plane & Tractors you can climb on and an amazing model railway. And the children's museum is similar. That is one of the great things about living in the city.

anorak · 25/02/2008 01:30

Hello all. Would like to have some shops to choose from! The only US shops we have here are KFC and DKNY.

UnderRated · 25/02/2008 01:33

lol @ KFC
