oh yeah, we're "freezing" here in la too. Everyone has their snow gear on and the school won't let the kids line up outside....it's dropped down to low 50's!!!!!

OverRated · 24/01/2008 19:05

rofl, SofiaAmes - it's a different world over there!

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 25/01/2008 01:05

Bitterly cold here today. The wind just takes your breath away. But the weekend is supposed to get up in the 50's so we will have winter weather LA style for a bit

expatinscotland · 25/01/2008 01:33

My dad was just up in CO today, closing on a property with my aunt.

Said it was 'bitter cold', but his definition and mine are a little skewed .

anorak · 25/01/2008 02:22

Hello all, sorry have not been around much in the late evenings and didn't realise until just now catching up that you had been looking for me! Sorry about that I was posting a little bit. My sister came over from England for a couple of weeks to help me convalesce and she was with me 24 hours a day. She made me laugh all day and made me feel like doing stuff like going to the beach. Instead of my (often) 10 hours alone in the house during the day I had a constant companion and it was fab.

I just took her to the airport to go home and I am so sad.

OverRated · 25/01/2008 02:42

Oh Anorak Its always hard for me when visitors leave - everything seems so quiet when they've gone. I'm glad you had such a good time with her though. She sounds lovely. I think she should come and visit me

OP posts:
anorak · 25/01/2008 02:53

Yes her poor DH was missing her really badly. I cope quite well with most things by having some alone time and a bit of a cry watching mawkish tv or something, a bit of staring out of the window, you know. And I can feel a whole fortnight's worth of it brewing up now.

OR I just looked at the list to see where you lived - you made the list but you're not on it yourself!

OverRated · 25/01/2008 03:12

Aaah, tis an old list, Anorak - I'm #1. I changed my name as I think I may be being 'watched' Not that I'm well hidden now

Hope you have some good TV to watch. I'm watching a film called This is England - it's set in the 80s and is making me feel all homesick. Again!

I love the word mawkish. I should use it more often.

OP posts:
anorak · 25/01/2008 03:20

Being watched - doesn't sound good. Hope it's nothing too awful.

Yes we get a channel with 2 episodes of the Waltons every morning - perfect crying time.

Never heard of This Is England. But 80s would probably get me going too.

Think I may have to go to bed in a moment. DH has been very pressured at work (goes with the territory of scoring a fab job in Bermuda I guess) and so is up till 11.18 now unwinding - unusual for him when it's work the next day. He's also very sensitive to my moods and knows I am needing time to calm down or I might have one of my depressive 'episodes'. He's a living miracle in fact! But I think he is getting close to very gently enquiring if I would like to go to bed in a minute! I may disappear without warning.

How's the weather up there? Saw the snow in california on the TV, it is even worse where you are?

jabberwocky · 25/01/2008 13:43

How nice that your sister was able to come visit! Hope things are going well for you today. The Waltons are definitely good for when you need a good cry tho.

jabberwocky · 28/01/2008 13:52

Everyone must have had a much more interesting weekend than I did

OverRated · 28/01/2008 18:35

No, mine was so dull I have nothing to post about!

Hope Anorak is ok.

It was above freezing today and felt quite tropical. All the snow is melting but it's set to freeze tonight so we'll be slipping all over the place when we go out tomorrow.

OP posts:
chocchipcookie · 28/01/2008 20:43

Well I am so p-eed off I feel like screaming.

Those with little children have all this to come. Be warned.

My DS aged 16 is applying to college summer schools. They run 3 week 'taster' programmes to find out what you want to study and get a feel for college life. If you do well the uni may notice you and it helps you get a place.

He has worked so hard - each college has a different form requiring different essays - not like the one UCCA form I had to do for uni.

So he's done his bit but he can't send them in because two of his bloody useless teachers haven't done his references. They are simple forms he gave them over 2 weeks ago. Meanwhile the programmes are filling up.

Believe me it's not because they are doing extra-curricular. Both these teachers bugger off at 2.20pm on the dot. I'm fuming. Just emailed them both v. politely chasing it up because I don't want to alientate them.

Someone told me you age five years in the year your teen applies to college. I can believe it.

And don't get me onto the subject of 'the alumni factor.' Interesting that all the top uni's have a space on the form to put the names of relatives who have been there. And I thought it was a meritocracy over here.

Vent, vent, vent.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 28/01/2008 22:46

Oh dear chocchip - you have my sympathies. I only have littlies but we are having schooling issues ourselves. We are moving back to the UK in August and ds1 is supposed to start in reception in January (2009). As we are not currently resident there we have not been given a school for him. I have us on the waiting lists for the schools we wanted but we realistically be considered for a place until we return. There are 3 schools in our area that apparently still have places - none are very nice . They have to find us a place somewhere once we move back, but it could be anywhere in the county . I feel quite helpless.

OK - have heard from the woman teacher who has promised it for tomorrow. Nothing from the man. Surprise!

I think it is 15-20% of Harvard undergrads who have parents who went there. I certainly don't think of a Harvard person in the same way now.

What a pain, chocchip! You'd think they would be keen for their own students to do well, wouldn't you?

Quote from Bermudian radio today, 'and the temperature just a few minutes ago in Hamilton was 57 degrees, so quite chilly' All the Bermudians go round in Parkas and boots and wooly hats when it gets this 'cold'.

I'm starting chemotherapy tomorrow, and I'm a bit nervous about it, have been out buying a headscarf and a hat today just in case.

Yale's the same, chocchip. I think most colleges are

Anorak, hope all goes well - keep us posted wont you? Will be thinking of you.

Lol @ Bermudian's in their hats. It was 47 today I went out without a coat

Anyone else watch the State of the Union Address?

OP posts:
chocchipcookie · 29/01/2008 03:56

No, I'm too busy thinking of ways to raise half a million dollars in six months to buy my son a place at college.

Didn't George Bush get a place at Yale based purely on connections merit?

OverRated · 29/01/2008 04:00

Yes, he did

And even er at the cost of college.

Dear SB. I'm sorry to hear about the operation! What is the plan? Do you have childcare covered etc?
