We all have the D & V bug
It started at 7pm last night with ds2, then dh at 3am, me not long after and finally ds1 at about 5pm this evening. I actually haven't V'd, but I am the only one who hasn't got both and I suspect it is just a matter of time. I am up with ds1 on the settee trying to sleep so that I can help him quickly if he V's. We all seem to have horried stomach cramps as well.

Please send lots of get well vibes this way.

Also, any tips for entertaining the dcs between naps other than telly as they are very restless?

dooneygirl · 22/01/2008 02:31

Ok, well if you're going to do it.

LOOK AWAY FOR THIS POST TOO, CALI.

I got initiated into the mommy club yesterday. DD had a funny look in her eye, so I scooped her up and ran, and she projectile vomited all over the 2 of us and the entire bathroom. She didn't make it to the toilet, but at least we were in the bathroom and not in the living room with the furniture and the hand-knotted rug below the sofa.

GGM-We're on movies and TV today ourselves. I figure one day isn't going to do harm. They got bored, though, and spent the last part of the day zooming and running around. We're going to in-laws Thursday, so hopefully they can get better enough for the 4 hour car ride and being down there.

I forgot, welcome loopsngeorge.

Totally agree with you guys about the bread, too. I will never look at bread or chocolate the same way after my visit to Europe all those years ago. The first day back, I cried about the bread. I told everyone that I was happy to be home, but, trust me, that wasn't the reason why.

OverRated · 22/01/2008 02:50

Oh goodness, you really have all been suffering I have no idea how to entertain poorly kids, I'm afraid. I'd do the movie thing. Can they do playdoh or something? Painting? Must be awful if you are feeling rotten too, GGM.

Sending you all positive vibes for healthier kids in the morning.

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 22/01/2008 02:54

I don't think I want them to be healthier. I've been feeling pretty sick for the past 4 or 5 days, and they've pretty much recovered in 24 hours. I need them to be sleepy and listless for me.

OverRated · 22/01/2008 03:23

Feel better soon, Dooney. It's no fun being ill when the kids are not. Can your DH help out?

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 22/01/2008 03:33

He did all day yesterday (went grocery shopping and took care of the kids and made dinner and did the dishes and got baths), but he's getting ready to be off for 4 days with his job, and doing a bunch of training stuff at the same time, so he's gone for work and doesn't get home early.

SofiaAmes · 22/01/2008 06:37

Hey Loopsngeorge...I was just thinking about you the other day wondering if you had come to town yet...didn't you have a different name before. (I am clearly the only moron who didn't realize that an online name wasn't supposed to be your real name). Anyway, why don't you CAT me and let's get together, I'd love to meet you. I am between jobs at the moment so actually have my days free (and childfree). I'm not far from Brentwood. There is a BagelFactory not far from Brentwood at the intersection of National and Sepulveda. They have the most amazing bagels (great for little ones too) and the Challah..(we're sort of adicted to the chocolate chip challah in this household). Also Trader Joes is a great source of just about everything for a fraction of the price of Whole Foods. (oops, just saw overrated said same thing).

loopsngeorge · 22/01/2008 07:43

Been to Whole Foods and got something that looks like normal bread so will try it for my toast tomorrow! Just not going to think about the price of it!!
Hi Sofia - nice to hear from you. The BagelFactory sounds good. I'm just getting used to driving around so haven't ventured far yet. Mostly just between Brentwood and Pacific Palisades as I can just go in a straight line all the way down Sunset! That sounds good about meeting up, will be in touch.
Hope all the poorly kids/mums recover soon...

jabberwocky · 22/01/2008 15:41

Bread machines are great if you don't like the Whole Foods version. I used ours every week for about 3 years. Then ds2 came along...

Huge sympathies for all with the D&V bug. ewwwww

I'll have to go look in a bit as to the brand but it's just an inexpensive one from Wal-Mart and has worked quite well. Do get the larger (2 lb?) size for sure.

dooneygirl · 23/01/2008 01:02

Hey Overrated. Was watching the news while chopping up stuff for dinner and it made me think of you twice. First, I had to laugh because they were making a big deal about how cold it was this morning. I think it hit around 20. I guess it brought so much to a halt today. It didn't even snow. I bet anyone living in Chicago would laugh at us now. I then saw a big sinkhole in Chicago, and hoped it wasn't anywhere around you.

OverRated · 23/01/2008 02:11

Can't help with breadmakers, I'm afraid.

20 is a bit chilly isn't it? My feet got wet in the snow earlier and haven't warmed up since. Brrr. I haven't heard about a sink hole here so it obviously hasn't effected me.

Have just heard about Heath Ledger though

loopsngeorge · 23/01/2008 02:22

Hurrah - tried my "French batard" from Whole Foods for breakfast and success! DS pronounced that it was indeed 'bready bread'
thanks for the tip!

OverRated · 23/01/2008 02:30

Yay for Whole Foods & its bready bread!

OP posts:
dodgykeeper · 23/01/2008 14:41

IKWYM about the bread. I hadn't realised how lucky we were to have a specialist marketplace at the end of the road that does a great range of what they call "Artisan" bread. Its a bit pricey at around $4 a large loaf but my ds makes sure we get our value for money by eating every available free sample in the store - its the Scot in him! Isnt it funny how they turn their little noses up at every new food you present them with but a stranger putting it on a platter in a store they eat no problem. I got dd to eat salmon in a herb crust by telling her that the lady from Sams Club cooked it. Oh that has just reminded me, Sams Club had a pack of 3 frozen, partbaked loafs that were really good.
I am sitting here in my gym stuff as I had great intentions when I woke up this morning. Wish I wasnt so easily distracted.

OverRated · 23/01/2008 19:26

lol dodgykeeper- did you make it to the gym? Getting the right clothes on is a big step. I never even manage that. I do lie in bed and think about it though...

OP posts:
dodgykeeper · 23/01/2008 21:08

Yes, eventually. Ds had swimming lesson at the YMCA after lunch so while he was in the pool, I did 25 min on the cross trainer watching the food network. All the good work spoiled though by the creamy pasta dish I was inspired to make!
BTW has anyone read the book "Eat This Not That" (cant remember the author at the moment) It compares similar products and tells you which one is better. For example turkey bacon and normal bacon apparently have very similar levels of fat and cals but the turkey bacon has double the sodium. What shocked me most was that a kids portion of mac and cheese at a restaurant has about 1200 cals and huge amounts of fat, salt and sugars. My dd quite often choses mac and cheese when we are out - not any more. I saw the bloke on Ellen talking about it and decided to read it. Scary stuff.

dodgykeeper · 23/01/2008 21:14

Just reminded of the Dara O'Brein joke "If Gillian McKeef says you are what you what you eat, she must eat shrews!"

SofiaAmes · 23/01/2008 23:05

Doesn't surprise me dodgykeeper. I am always amazed at what people feed their kids (and themselves) in the name of health. Granola bars and power bars and that sort of stuff are worse for you in a lot of ways than a traditional chocolate bar and I'm sure are a lot less satisfying (don't really bother with either myself). And juice instead of soda. Really apple juice is only marginally better as a habitual drink for kids than 7Up. Or the one that made me laugh was my old boss who would have a Subway salad as a low calorie healthy option and then smother it in ridiculous amounts of dressing chock full of sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oils and gums and thickeners. Personally I'd rather have a piece of cheese cake and know that my dessert is truly sinful rather than pretend healthy (have actress friends who will eat whole bag of low cal cookies rather than 2 lovely normal ones).

OverRated · 24/01/2008 02:05

I totally agree, SofiaAmes. Sounds like an interesting book, dodgy. I am looking for some food-related books, especially about production and quality of what we buy so I'll look out for that.

Is anyone else feeling a bit bleurgh, or is it just me?

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 24/01/2008 02:38

I wanted to own post number 400. Don't have much to say. We're off to Southern Oregon tomorrow, and it is supposed to snow, of course. I'm actually feeling much better today. I'm happy to be getting over bleurgh.

OverRated · 24/01/2008 16:46

with wind chill, it is apparently -31'C today.
