Hi MrsJohnCusack & others!

My Hubby is a Geophysicist! yep you probably had one for Christmas too and it broke!
Seismic processing for the oil and Gas industry! it's also what I do part time, plus 3 children, but I would love to move more into the Earthquake monitoring side. I hear you have a few more of them then good old blighty!! Oh and some volcanoes too?

kjaysmum · 10/01/2007 19:21

That is brill new 'H' festivalisng we shall go.
Really sorry I couldn't have caught up with you in Wellie Anniemac, maybe next time.
Zoe, I'm pretty sure an friend if mine up the coast is a geowatsiter, she's from uk origionally too, I think her hubby is on a pretty good wage by NZ standards. I have just spent a two weeks in Wellington, it's a great city, got a really good feel to it, although I'm glad to be going back up the coast next week as the city holds far too much temptation for me and I shall return with new clothes and a bad bank balance!! Also I like the pace of life in Kapiti, Wellington is not fast by any means compared to a Uk city but it all becomes relative somehow, oh yes the weather is a bit crap here too much wind, is better up the coast. Lots of kids stuff going on though but that seems to be true wherever you go in NZ very family orientated.
Ooh OOh Paps (sorry can't help calling you that) festie we will go go, festie we will goe tee tum, I am excited!!

MrsJohnCusack · 11/01/2007 09:21

oh yes, we do have earthquakes! felt our first one a couple of months ago, was lying on the sofa when a ripple went right under the whole house - a very strange feeling. And have seen Ruapehu (prob spelt wrong) smoking away merrily on the North Island too. Lots of seismic activity here for you and your DH Zoe!

themaskedposter · 12/01/2007 12:34

Have good flights everybody. Can vouch for the weather, the sun is out out out and it's great summer is here at last.

Paps - chamomile (either infused loose leaf - best - or tea bags) is great for conjuncitivis. If it doesn't clear up you need something stronger but it usually works on my boys.

If anybody ventures north to Auckland look me up too. Am meeting nickiw as soon as we can get a date together. Can't wait to meet another mnetter.

kjaysmum · 17/01/2007 08:12

Hi Sibble, where abouts in Auckland are you? We shall be near Auckland in Feb would love to meet up for a cuppa if we get close to your area

sibble · 17/01/2007 17:59

Hi, we are in Whitford, about 20-30 mins south. Would love to meet up when you are up here.

kjaysmum · 18/01/2007 06:45

Ok I shall run that by my Dp who has much more idea of where we are going and let you know if we'll be in the area, I hope so.

Charliedane · 19/01/2007 10:35

Hi all... considering a move to NZ and would welcome advice about documentation needed, healthcare, work and so on from other Brits who moved there recently and can advise of pit falls adn the like. Don´t even know which area to look at yet.. Thanks.

Papillon · 21/01/2007 08:05

Man is it good to be home

Sibble thanks for the reminder about chamomile tea, had totally forgotten about that. Used it tonight as he is still just a tad gluey about the eyes.

We are all having fabulous time. dd is daily becoming a better trampolinist. lots of spa pool action. Great friends of mine were here to welcome me back to whanau lands. I cried buckets of joyful tears.

kjm will ring you very soon

kjaysmum · 21/01/2007 08:31

just missed you on here paps, look forward to your call, ahhh sounds wonderful for you
Hi charliedane, as I moved over with my Kiwi Dp and our son is a citizen therefor I don't have much experience on some aspects of immigration i.e the points system.
The website to go to is...www.immigration.govt.nz.
It does seem to me that the people who applied before they left UK received residency much quicker than those of us who applied once here.
I am so happy here, but haven't experienced the wrench of being so far away if anything happens yet and hope I won't! Hope that helps

Charliedane · 21/01/2007 09:12

Thanks Kjays mum... a lot of people say that it is great in summer but very cold in winter because the houses have very poor insulation. Is that so?

kjaysmum · 22/01/2007 08:45

hmm well I guess that depends how old your house is, I think they cottoned onto the fact that New Zealand is actually quite near the south pole when they changed the building codes in 1978 so all new houses required thermal insulation. We are renting an old summer house which is lovely but was bloody freezing last winter, we are moving before next winter!! They call NZ the country of four seasons in one day, this is very true. We live on the west coast and I hear the east coast gets more sunshine. My goodness it blows me away though, we went for a drive into the hills today the native bush is outstanding, the flowers here are incredible, bird life fantasticunfortunately in some areas humans have destroyed much of the native habitat which we are desperately trying to claw back by preserving what's left and regrowing where possible

Charliedane · 22/01/2007 08:48

What airlines do you guys mostly use from UK to NZ? Who is cheapest?
