I was looking for thumbwitch's recipe for that cake and found the old thread has disappeared so Linzer and I thought we'd resurrect it!

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 12/10/2010 19:35

Thanks for starting the new thread, jenny. Grin

It's a shame the old thread disappeared, although I suppose it had been going a while - at least with this one in Living overseas, we'll be able to refer back if there are any recipes etc. that we need!

tadjennyp · 12/10/2010 19:49

Yes, I was intrigued by thumb's (think she's changed her name for halloween) recipe for spinach and beetroot cake! Currently making Nigella's minestrone soup for lunch as it's really simple and quick! It does suggest chicken stock but I'm sure substituting vegetable stock would work just as well. 750ml of stock, 300g of a tomato based pasta sauce, tin of mixed beans and 100g of soup pasta. Bob's your uncle and the dcs actually like it! Grin

That soup sounds good - and very easy to make as well, which is always a plus! I was just thinking about soup actually, as DH has bought a huge pumpkin for Halloween and it seems a shame to let it go to waste... I could probably make it in the slow cooker - I've done a few things in it so far, which have all gone down well with the DC, but nothing vegetarian yet and I really want to try out the results myself!

tadjennyp · 12/10/2010 20:49

And if you get fed up of pumpkin soup, I saw an interesting recipe (it was for butternut squash soup, but I'm sure pumpkin will work as well) which involved putting a small jar of red thai curry paste in it, and adding green beans. I can't quite remember what the thickening agent was but I think a few well cooked floury potatoes would work! I used alphabet spaghetti in the minestrone so I can call it alphabet soup. Grin The dcs can make their own pizzas tonight with some naam bread and the leftover pasta sauce etc. I can't persuade dd that I want carrot cake for my birthday though. How was yours? I hope you had a lovely time. Smile

blimey - took some work to find you ladies again! Well done for resurrecting, Tadjennyp - not my recipe though, sadly!
Worse, can't remember whose it was - was it Boss's?
OK - will have to continue the hunt for the previous because Blush I forgot to write it down as well and it sounds bloody lovely!

But at least I can place mark on this thread now I'm here :)

Athrawes · 13/10/2010 04:23

Anyone on the West Coast of the South Island of NZ?

YunoYurbubson · 13/10/2010 04:28

Right. The last thread was scary because it got so long, but if I get in early on this one maybe I'll stay the course.

Hello.

NickOfTime · 13/10/2010 04:30

are you all getting the chilean mine rescue? it's on bbc world Grin quite amazing...

LinzerTorte · 13/10/2010 05:01

I've just been reading about the rescue on the BBC website - it must be amazing to watch. Not sure if I can see it here, where we get all of two channels (neither of which are the BBC, sadly), although I'm sure it will be on the news later.

I had a lovely birthday thanks, jenny. We went out for breakfast at the local bakery, but otherwise didn't get up to much - just had a nice quiet day at home. We'll be going away for a long weekend later on this month though, as a joint birthday present to each other (it's DH's birthday in early November). Do you have any plans for your birthday?

thumb I can't remember whose recipe it was either, and unfortunately the old thread has been deleted as it was over 90 days old. I was trying to find it on Google (cached), but could only get the first page.

Hello to Athrawes (I seem to remember there was someone from NZ on the old thread, but can't remember where exactly) and Yuno. Smile

tadjennyp · 13/10/2010 05:01

I know, Nick, the first guy is up already - totally amazing! Perhaps it was boss's.

OP posts:
tadjennyp · 13/10/2010 05:03

Boss's recipe I meant, not her guy! Grin

OP posts:
tadjennyp · 13/10/2010 05:06

I don't know if we have any plans for my birthday as I'm leaving that up to dh. That may be a mistake as he is so busy at work at the moment. There is a live feed of the Chilean mine rescue on the Guardian website. Glad you had a great birthday! Hello to everyone else - feels great to be talking to people from all different parts of the world. Smile

OP posts:
3thumbedwitch · 13/10/2010 05:24

yes I was afraid it must have been because it was in chat, but I was under the (obviously mistaken) impression that it was 90 days from the last post, not the first one! Anyway - have asked MNHQ about it but will probably get told just that.

Well I can always stick a thread up asking for whoever it was to repost their recipe - that's probably easier; although I might wait until I hear from MNHQ...

ClimberChick · 13/10/2010 05:27

They deleted our thread Shock

ClimberChick · 13/10/2010 05:31

Welcome to the newcomers, I hope we get some more. Glad your birthday was good Linzer Smile

My mum and husband arrive in 2 days, think of all the babysitting Grin

thumb you feeling more human yet? I wonder if your DH is working through as otherwise he'll have to admit you feel ill as well and maybe help you Hmm

tbh the rescue has not captivated my interest [cold bitch emoticon]

tadjennyp · 13/10/2010 05:38

Have fun with all the babysitting climber Grin Have you gone for that acupuncture yet thumb?

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 13/10/2010 05:42

thumb I'd also assumed it was 90 days from the last post, but obviously not... Hope you're starting to feel better now btw.

Hi Climber - lucky you, having babysitters on hand. We only ever go out when we're staying at my ILs, which is about every 3-4 months on average.

Two nosey questions: whereabouts are you Yuno, and are you a teacher Athrawes?

Right, really must go and get the DC up now...

3thumbedwitch · 14/10/2010 01:11

morning fellow overseasers! (and sundry latenighters)

Am feeling a bit more the thing today, although still having a few temp fluctuations myself and filthy cough.

DS, on t'other hand, seems to have gone downhill again - but I have had a word with one of MIL's friends, who is a paed consultant, and she says there is a virus (which she can't remember the name of Hmm) that causes all the symptoms - middle ear infection, conjunctivitis (new this morning), cough, cold, stomach pain, no pooing - it causes the lymph glands in the stomach/abdomen particularly to swell, hence the pain - and DS's chin glands are up too so I think she has hit the nail on the head there. Apparently it lasts about 5 days so we've one more to go. He perked up a bit when MIL arrived about half an hour ago and agreed to go out in the pushchair, to get a strawberry milkshake - he needs lots of fluids of any kind, so fair enough.

Just can't wait for it to be over, tbh...

marenmj · 14/10/2010 01:20

Oo, I'll have to jump in early. The old thread was just too intimidating :)

Butternut squash makes my favourite fall/winter soup.

strandedatsea · 14/10/2010 01:24

Hi thumbwitch and others - I posted early on in your original thread but I got a bit lost and then it moved on and no-one would have known who I was and....anyway. Here I am again....

...I am still watching the miners but it does all get a bit samey and dh is being very sarcastic about the commentary. I want to see if the baby will be there!

3thumbedwitch · 14/10/2010 01:33

Stranded - weren't you the one on an unknown island in the middle of the Indian ocean, or something? (might have the wrong ocean there, my geography has always been weak Blush)

Hello marenmj - where are you at the mo?

strandedatsea · 14/10/2010 01:35

thumb (like the name change!) close....sort of...the Caribbean. There is a MNer on Reunion which is in the middle of the Indian Ocean (I think?)

3thumbedwitch · 14/10/2010 01:36

there! I knew I had the wrong ocean, I thought it was either the Caribbean or the other place but picked the wrong one. Ah well - nice to see you again anyway!

strandedatsea · 14/10/2010 01:43

thanks - I am going to try and keep up with this thread! I see we're both posting on the other thread about abusive relationships. It's so sad to see these people posting on MN, I guess so many of them don't have anyone to turn to in RL.

3thumbedwitch · 14/10/2010 01:47

it is - and it's even sadder when knobs like FL come along to make the OPs feel even worse about themselves!
