I was looking for thumbwitch's recipe for that cake and found the old thread has disappeared so Linzer and I thought we'd resurrect it!

nah it's fine kickass

it's not likely we'll be buying and this thread doesn't have a lot of traffic

kickassangel · 28/02/2011 00:58

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/02/2011 03:33

Mmmm those cupcakes look and sound amazing. I love the names and little explanations Grin

Good luck with the glow-in-the-dark icing. I reckon if you could perfect it by next October you'd have the best Halloween cupcakes in the world!

LinzerTorte · 28/02/2011 10:12

The cupcakes look scrumptious kickass - I'm starting to feel hungry now! I would order some if I was in your area. Grin

strandednomore · 28/02/2011 11:31

The cupcakes look delic. Where do you live - is it Ann Arbor? That's one of those places I had never heard of until I watched Lost and now it comes up all the time. Although I am still not sure where it is.

You should sell the glow-in-the-dark recipe to Heston Blumenthal!

kickassangel · 28/02/2011 13:01

stranded - yes, once you know about ann arbor it crops up everywhere! Lost kept mentioning it & there's quite a few films with it in. I'd never heard of it til dh's company merged with the one here & I met the americans who came over. all americans seem to have heard about it though - it has a v good uni & it often comes high in those 'best places to live' type surveys.

we live just outside in a small town - it's very 'small town america' but of course there's A2 (you can't say AA, that means something else) for city life & then Detroit for the airport/big concerts etc. all very convenient & I do think we really lucked out ending up here. the local schools are fantastic, and housing is massively cheaper than the UK!

mind you, the economy has suffered quite badly, MI is one of the worst hit states, so it's not quite perfect.

to get the economy lifted, MI is giving huge tax breaks to film companies, and as everyone has heard of A2, there have been about 5 movies based around the area here last year. dh's office is next door to a big empty office unit, and several of the companies have used that as their base. we've had the likes of sigourney weaver, david schwimmer etc around town.

tadjennyp · 28/02/2011 23:45

Best of luck with the cupcake business kickass - you should do amazingly well if the website is anything to go by!

Linzer - how was the rest of your weekend? Did you enjoy Made in Dagenham and your meal out?

Not much longer for you now frakkle? When are you due?

When do your student days start again stranded?

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 01/03/2011 05:02

Made in Dagenham was excellent, and we had a lovely meal out - it was free too, as I'd helped the restaurant owner to update his English menu before Christmas. I've also translated their website and the original menu, so have had quite a few free meals out of them. Smile

We also went out for lunch on Sunday for FIL's 75th, which was OK - a bit on the early side for me (the table was booked for 11.30), no vegetarian options (but they're quite accommodating - I just asked for the prawns to be left out of one of their dishes) and DH's niece was sulking throughout most of the meal for one reason or another (I've never known a teenager quite as moody). We have it all to look forward to again in early April Hmm, when it's my PIL's golden wedding anniversary.

Happy St David's Day! St Davids St Davids St Davids

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 01/03/2011 05:47

That sounds pretty nightmarish linzer. Hopefully next time the teen won't be quite so sulky.

I miss English language films :( I'd love to go and see a lot of recent releases the way you're supposed to in the last few months before you have DC but no go! 33 weeks at the moment. Would quite like it to be over around 38 if possible as the heat is killing me and I'm all puffed up.

thumbwitch · 01/03/2011 06:39

aww frakkle - I do feel for you! The heat is bad enough when NOT pg, so it must be loads worse for you! We've had another raging hot day today - and muggy now too, there is thunder and storm in the air but hasn't hit around us. DH copped it a few miles away - he said it wad really scary, so windy, and branches of trees coming down all over the place - he thought the car was going to be blown off the road! But we have had about 10 seconds of rain and that's it. :( We could do with a good downpour here but only if it clears the air.

Linzer - glad you had a good time at the movies - shame about the sulky teen but then I was one of those too - must have been a real trial for other people to be around sometimes!Blush

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2011 07:21

DH's niece used to be a lovely little girl but she's been moody and sulky since she was about 12 (she's 16 now and showing no signs of improvement). The thing that really annoys me is that everyone allows her to get away with it. MIL was complaining about her to me and saying how they (she and PIL) are always nice to her - I was very tempted to say that that's part of the problem. I wasn't the easiest of teens either but would never have been allowed to talk to my GPs the way she does (they all live together in the same house). She's very good with the DC and they love her, but she never speaks to me!

frakkle If it's any consolation, I hadn't been to see a proper film (i.e. one not aimed at children) for about eight years before last weekend. The heat must be exhausting, as being in the third trimester is tiring enough in "normal" weather. I'm not envious of you and thumb, but we could definitely do with some warmer weather here - you wouldn't think it was March, as it's still freezing here today and we've had yet more snow.

strandednomore · 01/03/2011 09:06

Frakkle - I do feel for you, I was in Jamaica up until about week 34 (?) with dd1 and it was really tough. I was working and the aircon in the office kept breaking down, plus you couldn't even open a window. Ah happy days! I had dd2 in the winter here in the UK and it made a huge difference. I haven't been to many films recently either - really want to see the King's Speech as it is still on at our local cinema but everyone I know seems to have already seen it.

Jenny - I start my course at the end of March. Am desperately trying to get everything done in the house that I need to before then as I suspect that although it is part-time it will be quite a lot of work. I will be going on a residential course - hopefully in May - which I am really looking forward to. Two child-free nights! Woo hoo.

I know NOTHING about sulky teenagers. Or teenagers at all. They are a species apart for me. My nephew is now 14 but seems fairly pleasant, but I only see him a couple of times a year.

I think I need to visit Ann Arbour now.

tadjennyp · 01/03/2011 18:04

Glad you had a lovely weekend linzer. I actually went to the cinema on my own to watch those two films. Was feeling really anti-social and a little bit homesick about bringing another baby into the world with no family around that I just wanted to be on my own with 'this is the BBC' and FilmFour! A bit sad I know but actually going on my own was quite refreshing. I recommend it for relaxation!

Sorry you're both so hot frakkin and thumb. So looking forward to a bit of a thaw. Last week it got down to about -10C at night but is a bit warmer now! I want to take Samuel out for a walk as I still can't get into my pre-pregnancy trousers at all. Lounging about in my joggers, just because they fit!

OP posts:
tadjennyp · 01/03/2011 18:06

That's very exciting about your course stranded. Yay for a residential course. I did a course for 2 hours last night, which was good, but poor Samuel had a rough time and therefore dh and I paid for it with ridiculously full breasts. Tmi sorry Grin

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 02/03/2011 01:38

Ha, you wouldn't believe it - I had never heard of Ann Arbor until this thread - and then I was watching the Brady Bunch (Shock! yes, I know) on tv and was moved to look up where they all were now and guess what! The lady who plays Alice went to Uni in Ann Arbor ("Ann B. Davis graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1948 with a degree in drama and speech.")

funny how little coincidences like that happen, isn't it :)

It's cooler here today - and we're still waiting for the rain. We need it to rain.

PenguinArmy · 02/03/2011 03:34

evening ladies

lies, i'm eating my dinner

tadjennyp · 02/03/2011 03:49

Dh cooked chicken alfredo for us tonight. He's such a star as I wasn't up to it.

OP posts:
PenguinArmy · 02/03/2011 04:05

well I should think so. You're doing enough looking after the 3 kids.

We had tarka dal, but tbh DH isn't much of a cook. I am however grateful that it ready for when I got in as I hate getting in at 7.

kickassangel · 02/03/2011 23:48

dh doesn't cook often (he's ridiculously slow & pedantic about it), but last night he did venison casserole which is just yummy & i'm about to eat it! (sorry to the veggies Grin )
