I was looking for thumbwitch's recipe for that cake and found the old thread has disappeared so Linzer and I thought we'd resurrect it!

OP posts:
strandedatsea · 14/10/2010 18:54

Oooh I'm cross I did a long post and it disappeared!

Anyway just wanted to apologise for what must have sounded like a real rant earlier. It just hit a really raw nerve because everyone thinks living here is just one long holiday and it's really not - it's just like living everywhere with it's ups and downs, good things and bad things - only (much) hotter!

There is also a very high crime rate (one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world, we all live behind bars, a 7-year-old schoolgirl was murdered a few days ago) plus little things like the fact that the children are beaten at schools here - not the school my dd's go to - it just, gets to you.

However I also realise we have had loads of great opportunities and experiences. Like I said, ups and downs! And I am sure that as you all live overseas you understand whatI am saying to some extent.

Hello All

Just found this thread. Last one was too long and intimidating [grin.] Also MN always seems to have server down if I try and post early evening (am in California).

Am going back to the UK next month! Will be SO weird as it's the first trip back since we moved here (in Dec 2009). Going on my own as mainly need to visit elderly parents (and we have 3DC so 5 flights is mega $$). We hope the whole family will do a long visit to the UK next summer.

Are you moving permanently back to the UK in December stranded?

redflipflops · 14/10/2010 19:40

grin again Grin

redflipflops · 14/10/2010 19:41

and again Grin

Confused
strandedatsea · 14/10/2010 19:50

redflipflops Grin - yes permanently. We want dd1 to start at our local (eg 5 mins walk) primary school and the latest she was allowed was January. Otherwise I would have done another full year here - inevitably having been here a year it's all getting easier. But I am looking forward to thinking about working and/or re-training, plus having friends and family close by.

Whereabouts in California are you? And what takes you there?

hornedtoadjennyp · 14/10/2010 19:57

Thanks Linzer - let's see if this works! Tad was for Tadcaster, where we were living when dd was born and I registered with Mumsnet.

hornedtoadjennyp · 14/10/2010 20:00

Hurray Grin

redflipflops · 14/10/2010 20:16

am a bit Envy. We'll probably be here another year or two (was a job transfer). We're living in a tiny town in a very rural location so am going slightly bonkers with nobody to talk too! (Santa Barbara County). I think overseas postings to big cities must be much easier...

redflipflops · 14/10/2010 20:17

Hello horned tad Smile

LinzerTorte · 14/10/2010 20:17

I was just wondering who the newbie was jenny, and then read to the end of the name. Grin

stranded I've started copying my posts (with Ctrl + C) before I post them as I was getting so frustrated at how many would suddenly disappear. No need to apologise for your rant earlier - I saw it as more of a "this is what the reality is like" than a rant, anyway. And am very impressed at you have almost finished a novel too.

Hi redflipflops - Envy at you being in California. I worked as an au pair for a Californian family (in Germany) and there was talk of me going to visit their family in the USA, but it never came to anything unfortunately.

marenmj · 14/10/2010 20:25

Linzer I'm the oldest of six and my dad always says that number four is when kids start running in packs, so maybe best to keep it to three Grin

hornedtoadjennyp · 14/10/2010 21:11

I'm not having another after this one either. 3 will be enough for me and I will be very grateful for that. Smile

kickassangel · 15/10/2010 01:29

i so need to sort out 'my mn' so i can name change. i have no idea what my email was when i joined mn, and can't access my own page. therefore i have never name changed Shock

ClimberChick · 15/10/2010 01:37

I've only just worked out the jenny part in her name as well Blush

waves at red, what happened to the sunshine?

hornedtoadjennyp · 15/10/2010 16:07

It was 80F here yesterday! Today will be 60. Talk about drop in temperature. I think it will be sunny all weekend though, so hoping to get out into the lakes and mountains for a walk for my birthday. What are everyone else's plans?

P.S. My name wasn't very imaginative but I had a 2 or 3 week old baby at the time, so that's my excuse!

3thumbedwitch · 15/10/2010 16:22

Happy birthday Jenny!

Hello to redflipflops

Linzertorte - what about Linzetortured? nice and simple change, still obviously you..

Temp's all over the place here as well - wind and rain at the mo making it chilly. Still, better than yesterday - bizarrest combination of muggy heat with chill wind!

hornedtoadjennyp · 15/10/2010 16:52

Thanks thumb! I will do my best!

LinzerTortured · 15/10/2010 16:58

Ooh, I do like that suggestion thumb - thank you! (But why couldn't I think of it? Wink)

Hope you have a lovely birthday tomorrow jenny and can make the most of the good weather. Our plans for the weekend aren't quite as exciting - we're taking the cars into the garage to get the winter tyres put on, DD1 has a dyslexia-related appointment and I'm planning on making pumpkin soup as DH has just carved the pumpkin.

strandedatsea · 15/10/2010 17:14

Hi everyone. It's about 90 dgerees and 99 percent humidity here. Again. Sigh Wink

I can't think of a hallowe'en name change either. Foreverstrandedunderthesea or something - looks a bit long! strandedatseepingwounds. Hmmm - I'm not good at this.

3thumbedwitch · 15/10/2010 17:19

strandeadatsea?
almost as subtle, if not more so, than bitterandtwistedgoredodger Grin

strandedatsea · 15/10/2010 17:25

Oooh yes that's not bad or perhaps strangledatsea?

strandeadatsea · 15/10/2010 17:46

right I've tried a name change - let's see if it's worked

hornedtoadjennyp · 15/10/2010 17:55

yeah strandead!

strandeadatsea · 15/10/2010 19:06

thanks thumb for your suggestion (I wish I could think of these things)! I feel more part of MN with a namechange. Now just need to start working on my Christmas name change.....

frakkinstein · 15/10/2010 19:32

Hehe I love your namechange strandead!
