Feeling so bloody stupid and angry at myself, I have 3 points, just got another notice through, doing 47 in a 40 - the previous limit was 50 - I didn't slow down in time, but what happens next what if this week I have been stupid as well, I am scared to open any letters

It always amuses me when the sanctimonious pile on and say "I always stick to the speed limits." That means, unless you have a heads up display, you are concentrating more on your Speedo than the road ahead. So whilst you are checking you're doing 29 mph you miss the kid who has run into the road.

Yes that’s right. The only alternative to refusing to follow the speed limit is merrily mowing children down as we go.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 24/07/2022 22:59

If he was doing 11mph how the hell was he speeding?

Presumably he’d hit the brake when he saw there was a child on the crossing but because he was speeding instead of coming to a stop before the zebra crossing he continue to move forwards and was still travelling at 11mph at the point of impact. If he hadn’t been speeding he would have stopped before reaching the zebra crossing once he started braking.

Except they never missed my child.

I ended up with 9 points, 3 for speeding, I got caught taking my late dp home after he had spent a weekend at my house, it was a dual arriagway from the motorway junction which changed from 60 to 30 just over the brow of the hill, the sign was under a tree & being spring wasn't in full view, I had slowed down but not enough, I was doing 45mph, I already had 3 points for missing a red light & then I got 3 more for the same offence two years later. Thankfully my licence is clean again now.

surreygirl1987 · 24/07/2022 23:36

I am so so sorry.

Fine. So you can concentrate on your speedo and the road ahead. Bravo.

Except you can't. If you're watching your speedo constantly you will miss something.

And to bellalab, it could be they were concentrating on their speed and no concentrating on other things.

This is the first time I have said this in 15 years on this forum ODFOD. Drivers should be watching the bloody road in front of them as well as watching their speed. It’s not difficult to do.

It’s also not difficult to glance at what speed you’re doing and realise there’s zig zag areas in front of you with a zebra crossing where there’s a woman with a pram and a 5 year old crossing.

Please feel free to delete this post MN, however I’m actually wondering if there’s a hairy handed poster here @VeniVidiWeeWee

Sat navs usually tell you if you're over the speed limit. Ours moos like a cow if you creep above the limit.

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2022 07:22

have you done the driving course at any point? they offer you this at some stage instead of points, would it be perhaps advisable to get this course, pay for it now to help your driving?

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2022 07:25

buy a brand new car with speed limiter, no excuse to speed then

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2022 07:30

or get a speed limiter fitted to your car

MakeMineALarge1 · 25/07/2022 07:57

Can't afford to buy a brand new car and I don't understand how a limiter works on a variable limit road.

OP it’s highly unlikely you’d lose your licence for 3 sets of 3 points. I know two people with 15 points that have still got a licence as they need to drive for work (not condoning this, just stating a fact). Of course it went to court and one of them got a solicitor but the courts generally don’t want to remove the ability to drive for people that need to drive to support themselves/their families.

Just take this as a lesson and make sure you change your driving going forwards. Leave extra time, pay more attention to signs and read the road more (so many people seem to drive with blinkers on).

I agree that it’s nigh on impossible to have never gone over the speed limit unless you only drive the same routes every day or rarely drive. If you don’t know that a change from say 40 to 30 is about to happen when you’re in a unfamiliar area it’s very easy to still be a couple of mph over that as you pass the sign. I once got caught doing 35 in a 30 as I went into a petrol station just before the sign so didn’t see it as I came out of the other side of the forecourt looking for a gap in the traffic.

It’s very easy to make a mistake and anybody that says they never have must do very few miles on roads they know like the back of their hands. Otherwise they’re just lucky not to have been caught.

Those that drive along way under the speed limit also tend to have a holier than thou attitude but they create a different kind of danger. Do those people in cars that do 55-60mph on the motorway as a matter of course realise how they impact upon HGV drivers? They dally along in their own little bubble with no regard for other road users. I’m assuming that some of the sanctimonious PP’s on here might fall into that category.

There are a lot of poor drivers out there OP so take this as a lesson and make sure you’re not one of them from now on.

For doing 7mph over the speed limit?

Think the OP is speeding far more than she’s letting on to have already have been caught twice and have this level of anxiety about more letters dropping through the door.

But yeah, it only takes one set of freak circumstances and excess speed for a fatality to occur.

whowhatwerewhy · 25/07/2022 09:15

Well done for ordering the speed device. Remember it's only going to be any use if you know what speed limit you are in .
Hopefully you will now become a better driver.

whowhatwerewhy · 25/07/2022 15:13

Have you considered a drive score app ?

I thought all cars already had a speedometer on the dashboard. Didn't yours work?

Kazzyhoward · 25/07/2022 15:22

@Lightningrain

If you don’t know that a change from say 40 to 30 is about to happen when you’re in a unfamiliar area it’s very easy to still be a couple of mph over that as you pass the sign.

Then use a quick dab on the brake pedal rather than relying on the car to decelerate. Better for cars behind too as they may not realise you're slowing down if your brake lights don't light up and you risk being rear-ended.

MakeMineALarge1 · 25/07/2022 15:59

I think this will be clearer, it will show me numbers rather than a needle on a dial

I think that’s right. My cars have the option on the speedo to show the number digitally and it does make it clearer and easier. Good call

Govesdancingpartner · 25/07/2022 16:40

You are menace on the road. Are you suggesting that it is ok to break the law because nobody else is on the road.
One speeding ticket is one to many.
Either give up driving or stop committing crimes. Your choice

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 25/07/2022 17:39

@BellaLab I am so sorry for your loss.

@VeniVidiWeeWee I actually can't believe anyone could be so fucking insensitive and show such a complete lack of empathy to a bereaved parent, especially in your speculative shruggy comment directly to her.
