Feeling so bloody stupid and angry at myself, I have 3 points, just got another notice through, doing 47 in a 40 - the previous limit was 50 - I didn't slow down in time, but what happens next what if this week I have been stupid as well, I am scared to open any letters

Has you car got Sat Nav? If so, have a check to see whether it has a speeding function? My Sat Nav beeps at me whenever I go over the speed limit. It also beeps when I approach a speed camera.

If you don't have Sat Nav, consider buying one with this function?

Last year. I go caught twice in the same week speeding. It was a section that was 49, then 30 for a short bit and then back to 40. I just lost attention and got caught. Did the speed awareness course and got 3 points. Whilst that made me a bit more aware of inadvertent speeding, I've found having my Sat Nav beep at me when I do has stopped any accidental speeding.

I do not believe it is possible for anyone to never do 31 in a 30. Never do 21 in a 20. Never do 71 on a motorway.

Then I'm sorry, I am the person that breaks that belief.... and I can only reiterate that you need to watch me drive. If anything I am the person that is seriously pissing people off behind me because I'm doing 29/69 just in case...

Wotaloadofshit · 24/07/2022 20:32

Hi OP..This is legal not AIBU so those piling on need to pipe down and find another thread to spout off on.

You only have 6 points. How long ago did you get your 1st 3 points. They only stay active on your licence for 3 years and drop off fully after 4 years.

It is very easy sometimes to get caught on the variable speed roads and they tend to have less leeway. Some of them will issue a fine if you are only 2, 3 or 4mph over the limit so in a 50mph zone that is miniscule and easily done.

Going forward remember posted speed limits are maximums and not targets, always go a mile or 2 below the posted limit and leave you house, work, the supermarket, whatever early every journey and then you'll be less inclined to be rushing and creeping over the limit.

How long have you been driving for, have you passed in last few years or been driving for many. If for many, then this is just clearly a run of bad luck and you know you can drive within limits. If you are only driving a few years then an advanced driving course may be of benefit to you.

Kanaloa · 24/07/2022 20:23

Really? You really believe it’s impossible to drive at the correct speed limit? I understand how op has ended up doing it, rushing or forgetting (although from the sounds of it she was semi aware hence the ‘there was nobody around’ excuse) but do you really believe no driver is capable of noticing the speed limit and driving within it?

No driver is capable of always driving within it, every single time, with no errors ever

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 20:34

I have been driving nearly 30 years. No accident.

Of course they are 😂 if you aren’t why don’t you invest in a good satnav system so you’re not regularly speeding?

I’m not saying it’s the worst thing in the world to have made that mistake. But it is of course possible not to go over 70 miles an hour on the motorway as the law requires. I manage to do it every time I use the motorway.

MoodyTwo · 24/07/2022 20:39

Oh OP I feel for you I really do.
However you need to think

Can you do anything to change what has happened -- No
Can you do anything to stop it happening again -- yes (stop speeding)

As you can't change what has happened, you need to come to terms that it won't change and what will happen, will happen... you need to breath !

Wotaloadofshit · 24/07/2022 20:48

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 20:34

I have been driving nearly 30 years. No accident.

Then if you've driven 30 years and this is the 1st time you have clocked up 6 points you need to take a deep breath and see this for what it is, a blip on your otherwise clean driving record.
You've obviously not been through this before, otherwise you wouldn't be so distressed by it.

My H clocked up 6 points in an hour a couple years ago, as he didn't realise a temp limit was in place from 40 to 30. He was caught one way at 36 and back again an hour later at 38, thinking he was within the limit, so it happens. They've dropped off his licence now.

How long ago were your 1st 3 points?

I am scared I am going to lose my house and my job

Better you lose your house and job than someone else lose their life.

March.
Just got a letter through so then I'll have 6

HardRockOwl · 24/07/2022 20:53

Are you yanking our collective chain OP?

You don't need to say sorry to randoms on the internet who are bored on a Sunday evening and only too happy to stick the boot in. And all your hand wringing is frankly bizarre

Just be aware when driving and ensure you are driving within the limit. It really is that simple

You either suffer with anxiety or you're pulling our leg.

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 20:54

But last week I went to the lakes a drove home from work along the same stretch of bloody road.
What if I did the same?

Lovemusic33 · 24/07/2022 20:55

I have been caught speeding a few times 😬, I don’t really have an excuse, I shouldn’t have been speeding but I am a bit of a daydreamer and sometimes miss signs.

If you have cruise control use it to set your speed when ever you enter a speed limit.
Get yourself a dash cam that shouts at you when your speeding (my dad bought me one, it’s annoying but it helps).

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 20:55

I don't suffer from anxiety
I'm just trying to make sure people know I know how serious this is

My H was banned on 31 May. He had a Morgan.....an absolute invitation to speed if anything was. Thank heavens its now being sold.
I have big mobility issues and he was always 'the driver'. On his guilty plea there was a section for mitigating circumstances, and I said although I had never been advised not to drive, my mobility and sight issues as well as low confidence made me reluctant to drive. His ban was reduced from 18 months to 6. But what really ps me off is that all punishment is to deprive me of transport, I can still drive him shopping etc. He can use his bike. We had tickets to superbloom at the Tower of London, but I can't take a train, so that had to be cancelled (it was a treat for me). Likewise a concert in London, test match tickets purchased (but I can't go ). He deserved to be punished for being foolhardy and breaking the law (by a considerable amount) but its me that's being inconvenienced. One good thing though....the f*g car is on the dealers forecourt.
To the OP, the court can take mitigation into account, but the simple rule is to not do the crime. Be more aware of your speed. I've been on a speed awareness course....it taught me to be more aware. I think all drivers should go on one, before they take their test.

I also think there’s far more to be learned from understanding that it’s inappropriate speed that is the danger, not necessarily exceeding an arbitary limit

somevroads are National speed limit but you’d be bonkers to do more than 30. I’ve had people say “but I wasn’t speeding” as if that’s more important than knowing what’s safe

Yep

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 21:04

I never thought of a dashcam. Thank you.

Identify as Katie Price and you'll be fine.

johnd2 · 24/07/2022 22:30

Wow I only read the first page but such a lot of horrible and unsympathetic responses. This place can be awful but this has really excelled.
I know speeding is not the most socially acceptable thing nowadays but gosh who needs enemies!!
Sorry OP, and not to mention this is the legal section, so you should go to court for the last points and explain your case, then you should avoid a ban (unless one of the posters on here is the judge)
Not likely to help your anxiety over it by going to court but it's the best thing to do from a legal point of view
Take care

VeniVidiWeeWee · 24/07/2022 22:36

It always amuses me when the sanctimonious pile on and say "I always stick to the speed limits." That means, unless you have a heads up display, you are concentrating more on your Speedo than the road ahead. So whilst you are checking you're doing 29 mph you miss the kid who has run into the road.

BellaLab · 24/07/2022 22:42

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 20:34

I have been driving nearly 30 years. No accident.

The driver that killed my son had been driving for 35 years. He was doing 11 mph when he hit my 5 year old on the zebra crossing. Oddly enough, his excuse was ‘he couldn’t slow down fast enough’. Perhaps if he wasn’t speeding my son would have had the privilege of living a full life?

I won’t join your pity party OP, I’m sure you’ll understand why.

There were zebra crossing signs FFS! Zig zag lines and big flashing lights 🙄. It was a 30 limit. I don’t know why he was speeding for goodness sake - I opted not to come to face to face with him for obvious reasons.
