Feeling so bloody stupid and angry at myself, I have 3 points, just got another notice through, doing 47 in a 40 - the previous limit was 50 - I didn't slow down in time, but what happens next what if this week I have been stupid as well, I am scared to open any letters

Ask if a speed awareness course is an option for points, although the previous points may have counted against you. We've all done it OP, but it's just a case of being more careful until the first points expire. It will increase your insurance though.

No need for the smug pile on
id guess most people on this thread have accidentally gone over a speed limit and just not got caught. It’s easy to do, and yes sometimes signage is hard to see, limits are arbitrary and occasionally seem to be revenue raising exercises rather than safety measures.

I try not to speed, but like everyone, may make an error sometimes. Anyone kicking the op while claiming they’ve never ever crept above 30 in error is a liar.

You're clearly not getting any here, and I don't understand why people are being so nasty. We've all done more than the speed limit multiple times, just not got caught.

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:24

Nope. Speak for yourself and don’t normalise dangerous driving.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 24/07/2022 19:26

My concern here is that you’re worrying only about yourself. Yes, you could lose your job if you lose your licence. What if you crash though? You could lose your life. You kill cost someone else their life. You could total your car. You could cost someone else their job because you total their car or cause them a life-changing injury.

Not speeding isn’t about not getting points. It’s about keeping everyone safe.

This exactly.

Everyone who’s piling the guilt on the OP - have you never EVER been a couple of mph over the limit? Never? Really? What you mean is that you’ve never got caught.

(OP - just fyi, speeding fines is one of those things that MN is very hypocritical sanctimonious about.)

I live rurally and the speed limits go up and down from 50, 40 and 30 all over the place - it’s incredibly hard to get it right 100% of the time. There are plenty of other ways to be a dangerous driver, and I bet some of the posters here have been guilty of them.

Accept you’ve made a mistake and try to be really careful from now on. You’ve only got 6 points so you’re a long way off losing your licence and they will expire within a few years.

Don’t panic, just learn from it.

Agreed. I’m routinely tail-gated and honked at for doing 45 in a 40 limit near my house… because people are upset I’m driving so slowly. Busses routinely overtake me doing 50+. The police have overtaken me too, several times, not with sirens on or anything, just going on their merry way. I always triple check the limit there because I seem to be the only person even within the 40 range!!! I think some people on this thread are being pretty sanctimonious and ignoring the realities of how many (most?) people really drive…

BitFedUpTheNoo · 24/07/2022 19:29

This thread has gotten pretty nasty! Put it into perspective - you were speeding (not excessively, drunk or careless driving) and got a couple of tickets. I've had points before too as have hundreds of thousands of others. Speed is about safety but frankly also a way of generating cash for councils. All you can do is put it to the back of your mind and hope for the best (and obvs drive ultra safely)

You’ve never ever been slightly above the limit?

the only way I believe that is is you’ve never driven!

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:31

OP wasn’t a couple of miles over the limit or she’d have the option of a speed awareness course. She’s been speeding repeatedly on the same stretch of road “because there was no one else around”. So repeatedly she is expecting another couple of speeding letters to land on her doormat.
I don’t want to see anyone this upset but 🤷‍♀️ she broke the speed limit on several occasions, deliberately, by several mph over the limit for that road. There’s nothing anyone can say on here that will get her off that. Nothing.

ZealAndArdour · 24/07/2022 19:31

I would consider myself quite fortunate if all that happened next was another set of points and no a fatality and a charge of death by dangerous driving, with a custodial sentence.

TheLoftHatch · 24/07/2022 19:32

If you did get another one this week, that would take you to 9 points which is not a disqualification. The best thing you can do is bottle this fear and upset and use it to make sure you don't do it again. Can you get a speed limiter on your car to prevent you from absentmindedly (or otherwise) exceeding the speed limit?

My car has cruise control and I always stick it on just to be doubly sure I don't absentmindedly exceed the limit.

FAQs · 24/07/2022 19:35

youd be surprised how many people drive with numerous points which should equal a ban, loss of income, carer etc has been used as a counter argument but you certainly can’t rely on it you need to up your driving safety.

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 19:36

How does a limiter work on a stretch of road that has several limits

I'm not asking for sympathy

What are you asking for?

How to persuade a court not to take your licence? Get a solicitor.

Get a sat nav which alerts you to speed cameras.

This is the consequences of repeatedly speeding, repeatedly not slowing down quick enough. If it’s a mobile camera then you’ve likely got away with it more than you’ve been caught.

Ginger1982 · 24/07/2022 19:37

You're overreacting. You have 3 points, you might soon have 6. You'd have to be caught another twice before hitting 12. But yes, slow down as of now!

You’ve never accidentally crept above? Never entered a lower limit area slightly above? I do not believe you if you say this is the case

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:39

Me too @BasilParsley . There’s this handy little thing on the dashboard I can look at and match the number on it to the posted limit for the road I’m on. Using just by foot on a pedal, can you believe it? Bloody brilliant, it is. Can’t think why more people don’t use them Hmm

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:43

Well, @FloydPepper I couldn’t give a shit if you believe me or not. It’s how I was taught to drive, I’ve professional drivers in my family and I believe speed limits are there for a reason, not just to cramp our style or hold us up.
I can categorically state I’ve never razzed along 7 mph above the limit so many times I’m now regretting the post arriving. Which is completely different to entering a 30 zone from a 40 zone doing 32mph.

2bazookas · 24/07/2022 19:44

I need my car for work, I am a shift worker and I have a child a home and an elderly mother, I am so worried, ....I know its my fault, but in my defence

Stop playing the whining victim. Stop justifying and defending your selfish lawbreaking.

If you gave a damn about your elderly mother and child, you would not put them at risk.

When you get into your car tomorrow, stop and think about this thread for a bit before you start the engine.
