Feeling so bloody stupid and angry at myself, I have 3 points, just got another notice through, doing 47 in a 40 - the previous limit was 50 - I didn't slow down in time, but what happens next what if this week I have been stupid as well, I am scared to open any letters

Me too @BasilParsley . There’s this handy little thing on the dashboard I can look at and match the number on it to the posted limit for the road I’m on. Using just by foot on a pedal, can you believe it? Bloody brilliant, it is. Can’t think why more people don’t use them Hmm

And the award for smuggest post of the day goes to…

Kanaloa · 24/07/2022 19:45

You need to just stop speeding. Once is an accident, several times with the ‘defence’ that there was nobody around is careless and selfish. Leave more time for each journey. If you think you need to leave at 8, leave at 7.30. Make sure you’re never ever ever rushing and tempted to go a bit faster since ‘there’s nobody around anyway.’ And long term maybe look for a job that doesn’t rely so heavily on you driving so much - it seems like it’s causing you a lot of anxiety.

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:43

Well, @FloydPepper I couldn’t give a shit if you believe me or not. It’s how I was taught to drive, I’ve professional drivers in my family and I believe speed limits are there for a reason, not just to cramp our style or hold us up.
I can categorically state I’ve never razzed along 7 mph above the limit so many times I’m now regretting the post arriving. Which is completely different to entering a 30 zone from a 40 zone doing 32mph.

Never gone 77 on a dual carriageway or motorway? Not even accidentally

your post said you never f do one more than the speed limit multiple times? You ress as lot believe that, even slightly?

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:47

Awww thanks @FloydPepper Blush
Who knew I’d get an award off Stirling Moss on the interwebs for being able to drive properly. Shucks.

I think you’re the one claiming superhuman driving skills. I’m saying I think we’re all human, you included…

Oh I will think about this thread

OP posts:
Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:52

Well @FloydPepper there’s ‘human’ and there’s ‘losing your licence because you think the speed limit doesn’t apply to you’. I know which one I am Smile
I think you should stop trying to normalise speeding. It kills and disables. It’s not a game to beat the camera or let your attention drift away from the ton + of metal you’re in charge of.

No you claimed to never make an error.

I think a realistic approach, being aware of our ability to make errors and learn from them is better than a sanctimonious approach that claims perfection.

I think you are doing the latter

EtnaVesuvius · 24/07/2022 19:55

ZealAndArdour · 24/07/2022 19:31

I would consider myself quite fortunate if all that happened next was another set of points and no a fatality and a charge of death by dangerous driving, with a custodial sentence.

For doing 7mph over the speed limit?

FloydPepper · 24/07/2022 19:56

I also think there’s far more to be learned from understanding that it’s inappropriate speed that is the danger, not necessarily exceeding an arbitary limit

somevroads are National speed limit but you’d be bonkers to do more than 30. I’ve had people say “but I wasn’t speeding” as if that’s more important than knowing what’s safe

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:57

I don’t care what you think @FloydPepper . I’ll never get so many points on my licence I lose it nor will I kill or disable anyone because “the road was empty”. I don’t think that’s a particularly high bar to have as a driver. If you do, fine. Cross fingers you don’t live anywhere near me Smile

Saucery · 24/07/2022 19:59

Ahhh, you’re one of those drivers! You prefer to set your own speed limits. Yes, I definitely hope I don’t drive the same roads as you Shock

Not what I said at all. Try again

i try and stick to
limits. Most are sensible, some are not. I try not to break any of them

i also try to pay attention to risk and yes, set my own limit if it’s lower than the posted one.

EtnaVesuvius · 24/07/2022 20:02

Aah, @Saucery , there we go. I was waiting for you to fess up. So 2mph over is ok, but 7 is ‘razzing’ along? So where’s the cut-off point?

3? 4? 5?

dontdrinkanddriveok · 24/07/2022 20:06

@MakeMineALarge1
My DF is a retired policeman.
He always told me about an accident he witnessed, involving a child.

I won't go into details here but if the speed limit has been adhered to, the child would have survived. However, the child did not.

The person wasn't speeding massively (7 miles is enough to make a big difference upon impact).

DF now teaches speed awareness classes and he asks everyone to tell him why they were speeding (such as it was early morning and no one else was about or the counter creeped up), and then he asks them to imagine that they are explaining this to that child's parents, as to why their child has not survived an accident.

It's a speed limit, not a target. And no, I have never ever been worried about post. Ever.

You need to sort your driving out OP, before something awful happens. (And I don't mean losing your license).

OnaBegonia · 24/07/2022 20:09

Instead of crying and worrying, start today being an aware and conscientious driver. Your attitude is very very odd, excuses and hysteria when the simple solution is to pay attention.
I've honestly rarely read an OP
so ridiculous.

I can see that. Some others love to give someone a kicking whilst claiming to be perfect.

you’ve acknowledged you need to pay more attention. Great, we all do sometimes. Don’t beat yourself up

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/07/2022 19:36

How does a limiter work on a stretch of road that has several limits

It doesn't. It only really works for the 70mph on a motorway or if you never go on roads above 50mph you could stick it on 50.
The best advice is to get Google which usually but not always shows the speed limit or an app which does tell you.

BasilParsley · 24/07/2022 20:18

FloydPepper · 24/07/2022 19:39

You’ve never accidentally crept above? Never entered a lower limit area slightly above? I do not believe you if you say this is the case

Nope. Never...If you don't believe me then I'm sorry, but I am a stickler for the rules and happy for you to come and follow me on any trip you like to see exactly what I do when there's a speed limit change...

Whatthebarnacles · 24/07/2022 20:19

Wow its like sitting in the headmasters office in here. Barely anyone answering the question just giving OP down the banks. OP has said countless times that they realise the error of their ways and are really sorry. There's always a finger wagging shoulda woulda coulda agenda. 🙄

OP - I'd be as worried as you are if this happened to me. Is there any chance of a speed awareness course instead of the points? If not, perhaps be proactive and sign up for an awareness course / additional driving lessons yourself. This way, if anything else did land from the last week's worth of driving and it went to court you could prove that you've really felt the impact it has had on you and already started taking steps to ensure it doesn't happen again. You'll also be making roads safer.

Sometimes a real scare like this is enough to learn from... (and in true mumsnet style, albeit without the know-it-all undertone, please make sure you do! Much less stress and, moreover, less danger) X

I do not believe it is possible for anyone to never do 31 in a 30. Never do 21 in a 20. Never do 71 on a motorway.

Really? You really believe it’s impossible to drive at the correct speed limit? I understand how op has ended up doing it, rushing or forgetting (although from the sounds of it she was semi aware hence the ‘there was nobody around’ excuse) but do you really believe no driver is capable of noticing the speed limit and driving within it?
