continuing on from the last thread which morphed from a discussion about antisemitism to tracking it globally.

I’ve probably missed people out

to start off with something positive - this was a few yeshiva students response to antisemitism ❤️🕎

“Three Jewish college students from NJ were dancing at Denver International Airport. They said they were motivated to do this after the mass shooting in Australia: “We will not be scared or give in to the darkness, we will only add more and more light.” Happy Hanukkah!”

they’re playing my favourite zusha chanuka song, and one of them looks like DHs nephew who lives in America! Had to do a double take and check it wasn’t him!😆

Still no response from Mumsnet (have also emailed twice to ask why - even if they disagree it should be removed, they should at least acknowledge it).

In other news, turns out the background checks the govt does are entirely pointless. This level of incompetence is baffling.

When I was questioning the moderation of MN over a recent weekend, it took until the Monday morning to get a proper response/explanation.

I think the issue got raised to a more senior level and not everyone works over weekends. So I hope you get a proper response on Monday if not before.

ErroltheSwampDragon · 27/09/2026 10:58

Thanks @Twiglets1 thats good to hear. I wonder what it will take (if anything does) to make them realise that standard office hours probably aren't appropriate for all staff for a social media site that is heavily used outside of those hours.

GentleSheep · 27/09/2026 11:05

Proper moderation would likely include having more moderators (anyone know how many MN actually has?) and those who are dedicated mods over weekends/holidays. Even if some of the mods aren't senior enough to give detailed replies to some questions, they can still acknowledge the questions are being passed on to regular staff who'll answer shortly. Suspect posts could at least be hidden until they could be further checked and unhidden if necessary.

MN's policy of 'we rely on users to report posts' is just another way of saying 'we don't have enough staff and we don't care enough to get more'. 🙄

I mod elsewhere and some places do moderation far, far better than MN, although none are perfect. This site is way to big to be half-hearted about it.

Agree with all that. There don't seem to be enough mods and especially more senior ones over the weekends in particular.

Also I believe some - no idea how many - are volunteers.

The site should invest in more paid moderators in my opinion.

And more training on spotting racism in particular antisemitism

Very true, and you can see it in the reviews online/complaints on Site Stuff. It used to just be volunteers overnight but not sure if that's changed as the site grew? I occassionally see things get hidden but usually they don't get actioned till late the next morning (not just antisemitism,m and other bigotted responses, also plenty of attacking individuals).

Even if they couldn't action things but either left them or hid them, I don't understand why the system doesn't even send you an automated email saying the report has been received. For all I know, the report button isn't even working

Neverstopwondering · 28/09/2026 01:00

Any posters accusing police of human rights violations or humiliating the Fairford terrorists yet?

I mean they did handcuff them, strip them of clothing and make them sit on the floor. We were told before when it happened elsewhere that this was against human rights and all that jazz.

BrinkWomanship · 28/09/2026 10:30

I thought that too @Neverstopwondering but what do we know?!

That's disgusting, @PurpleThistle7. What a disgrace. 😢

Twiglets1 · 28/09/2026 10:42

I'm so sorry @PurpleThistle7 that's awful for you.

No thought about their Jewish staff members or students at all!

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 28/09/2026 10:43

@PurpleThistle7 there is actually no words to respond to that.

Just to let you know you do have allies and are not alone.

PurpleThistle7 · 28/09/2026 10:47

I've put in a complaint to central University. Genuinely makes me feel sick to think about. A bloody party to celebrate a pogrom.

GentleSheep · 28/09/2026 11:24

That's just awful @PurpleThistle7 - glad you have complained.

It's so revealing of their utter inability to consider anyone else in their obsessive virtue-signalling. As a non-Jew my heart goes out to you.

A lot of funding from vested interests has gone into universities where students are idealistically ripe for radicalisation, full of passion & short perspective.

We should not just be wary of who funds our political parties, they are the end product of our education system, as are our teachers.

EdithStourton · 28/09/2026 14:15

That is shocking, @PurpleThistle7. Absolutely appalling.

Makes my skin crawl, quite literally.

Pudmyboy · 28/09/2026 16:10

@PurpleThistle7 that is shocking, I stand with you on this thread and would in real life. Utterly unacceptable behaviour from the Uni. I was going to put 'unbelievable' but sadly it isn't.💐

NicolaMarlowsMerlin · 28/09/2026 20:45

I”m so sorry @PurpleThistle7 . It is just so hard to witness countless people going batshit crazy and somehow becoming incapable of reasoning, or even basic human concern, isn’t it? I am infuriated by the student march in London on 7th October. Just march another day if you have to march ffs. Cannot understand what the justification is.

@PurpleThistle7 I'm so sorry. I don't suppose it would help/do anything if those who may be willing wrote into the uni to complain too? I presume if we are not staff or students, our voices won't really carry weight?

Anyone can complain!
https://usg.ed.ac.uk/key-compliance-information/complaint-handling-procedure/procedure

or [email protected] to email one in.

I think it's disgusting and the fact my so-called union is in bed with these bigots is shocking. We are two days into a 5 week strike but I'm working as I just refuse to engage with any of it.

The procedure | University Secretary's Group | University Secretary's Group

Complaints regarding the University’s service (that being action, lack of action, or about the standard of service provided by the University or on our behalf) should be handled under the Complaint Handling Procedure (CHP).
