Antisemitism

I read the posts on here with interest and often the subject of anti semitism comes up. I was brought up in a town in the South East. My mum gave me a book about Anne Frank when I was around 8 and I can remember asking ' what is a Jew?' as I had never met one. When I was about 14 a girl from northern Israel came to my school and I was asked to befriend her and help her settle in. I can remember being fascinated about her life in a Kibbutz and she used to show me
Hebrew writing. I don't recall ever hearing anything anti semitic about her or her brother as the only two Jewish kids - to my knowledge in the school. I also remember in my twenties encountering a group of lads from North London - white something and them having an absolute hatred for Jewish people. I can remember feeling utterly shocked as I'd never heard anti Jewish speak prior to this. Reading some of the recent posts on here it has made me wonder wherever there are pockets in the Uk with Jewish communities that experience antisemitism where the rest of the UK it does not occur as people simply have never met a Jewish person just their life- to their knowledge.Where I live I have only met 4 Jewish people in the Uk in my life and I am 47. The most Jewish people I have met were in Israel when I visited in 2000.

Their charter doesn't say they support a two state solution because their charter absolutely doesn't recognise Israel as a state.

Don't you dare come here with your facts and logic. Shoo! Shoo! Away with thee.

It always astounds me that people are so willing to ignore the fact that Hamas were elected on the basis of their original charter. Pretend that it isn't relevant to the situation at all.

Yes this.

It's like when people go on about a ceasefire. My older DS (aged 14 and terrified of anyone finding out he is Jewish) told me it was discussed in RE at school and his (non-Jewish) teacher said very firmly; 'Remember- there WAS a ceasefire and Hamas broke it. Hamas don't actually want one'.

I'm glad he had that experience with a teacher! It could so easily have gone the other way.

My maths teacher decided to sit us all down on September 12 2001 to explain why people in the Palestinian territories were celebrating with street parties and handing out sweets the day before 🙃 I to this day don't know why she specifically spoke about Palestinians as I assume people in other countries did similar, but that was the beginning of what then turned into a period where I was regularly targeted by anti-Semitic and anti-Israel comments, which were in themselves anti-Semitic seeing as I was exposed to them purely because I was Jewish 🙃

Sorry, that felt like a really good therapy session to get that off my chest again 😂 I've found myself needing a regular purge the past 7 months

Sorry but my heart sank at that article and the images I've seen of the counter protest. The pro-Israel protestors need to reframe their narrative and focus on the hostages and 7/10 and especially antisemitism. And above all ditch the bloody flags, which just serves to makes the public think they're pro-Israeli government (are they?). It's turning a lot of Jewish people off and in my opinion encouraging more hate towards our community in general.

What objectionable signs or chants have you seen / heard? Genuine question as I haven't read or seen anything about how it went yet apart from the express link above and something on Times of Israel.

Humdingerydoo · 24/05/2024 11:21

I actually think this screening is the one time the Israeli flags should be flying high at these things, because it was mostly Israelis who were the victims. I'd see it as showing support for the victims and the country as a whole, not for the government. I guess I think the Israeli flag has more of a place at this event than at demonstrations against antisemitism, because it was Israelis who were directly affected.

But as I said, haven't seen any of the posters etc so can't yet comment on that! And I know people are obviously desperate to hear my un-asked-for opinion.

There's some awful footage on X, but I'm reluctant to post it here. Suffice to say, it's not a good look if it comes across that antisemitism is being fought with aggression and racism.

Understood, and agreed. I don't have X so will just have to leave it there!

Hélène79 · 24/05/2024 14:22

@Humdingerydoo Just as an example, I've seen a long video of awful far right racism, possibly EDL. But also a short video of horrible aggression, such as throat-slit miming from what appears to be a young Jewish guy, although I may be wrong. But whoever he is, we need rid of that behaviour. The fascists are trying to attach themselves to the Jewish community and I fear their presence will be accommodated by some of the more hawkish types, which is just going to present more of a threat to us ultimately. I felt really upset seeing the videos and think you would be too, but don't want to post them because...you know.

It's disappointing and just so stupid. I wish people would wake up and realise your enemies enemy is not your friend.

Oxford Street. I'm not actually sure what I would do if I saw this.

He hasn't been yet and that is part of the problem. This emboldens people.

The police are 'actively looking' for him at least.

“It has come to my attention that you are Jewish. Is this true?” asked the former client in the message. “If so, I’m afraid I will have to cancel our appointment as I can’t in good conscience be tattooed by you at the moment, given the current political climate. I’m sure you understand. I wouldn’t be so bold as to ask for my deposit back but I would humbly ask that you donate it to a humanitarian cause. Hopefully there will be a permanent ceasefire soon so we can reschedule.”

Absolutely outrageous.

I also saw something on Facebook about a women yesterday at River Island in Brent Cross being harassed by three women who worked there for wearing a Magen David. She eventually had to ask to be escorted out by one of the many members of staff who weren't harassing her but also weren't telling the others to stop, just standing there and pretending it wasn't happening.

And yet, according to CITME anti-Zionism absolutely isn't antisemitism.

No because obviously anti-Zionism is just them having more humanity than the rest of us.

I'm so bored of it all.

If you were thinking of voting Conservative (please for the love of God don't), they're just as anti-Semitic as Labour was.

Antisemitism
PurpleChrayn · 09/06/2024 09:47

I admit I flirted with the idea of voting Conservative for a couple of days, but both DH and I will vote Labour, as we have in every general election, for better or worse.

We had a leaflet through the door from an independent candidate standing in our ward, with so much hyperbolic nonsense about "the horrendous genocide in Gaza". Suffice it to say, she won't be getting my vote, but some goons will likely vote for her.

Our local cycle shop is advertising a "Bike Ride for Palestine" and I feel like going in and asking exactly how is it "for" Palestine. "For" which bit? The civilians who rejoiced on Oct 7? The people who hid hostages and bodies in their homes? The terrorist leadership? It's pure idiocy. Take a bike ride TO Palestine if you care so much.
