Antisemitism

I read the posts on here with interest and often the subject of anti semitism comes up. I was brought up in a town in the South East. My mum gave me a book about Anne Frank when I was around 8 and I can remember asking ' what is a Jew?' as I had never met one. When I was about 14 a girl from northern Israel came to my school and I was asked to befriend her and help her settle in. I can remember being fascinated about her life in a Kibbutz and she used to show me
Hebrew writing. I don't recall ever hearing anything anti semitic about her or her brother as the only two Jewish kids - to my knowledge in the school. I also remember in my twenties encountering a group of lads from North London - white something and them having an absolute hatred for Jewish people. I can remember feeling utterly shocked as I'd never heard anti Jewish speak prior to this. Reading some of the recent posts on here it has made me wonder wherever there are pockets in the Uk with Jewish communities that experience antisemitism where the rest of the UK it does not occur as people simply have never met a Jewish person just their life- to their knowledge.Where I live I have only met 4 Jewish people in the Uk in my life and I am 47. The most Jewish people I have met were in Israel when I visited in 2000.

Thank you for being ok with me posting here. I've been feeling very alone and confused and it's good to read the posts here that echo a lot of feelings I have. I'm so sorry for what you have to go through. I'm sorry that antisemitism is nothing new to you. My eyes have been well and truly opened during all of this.

Kasperber · 14/05/2024 22:38

stonecutter. That’s so hard. I hope you and your DH can get to the point where you can stop wondering or trying (in his case) to be the ‘right sort of Jew’. I’ve tried that all through my adult life - trying to not display anything that made be viewed as stereotypical Jewish behaviour . I’m done with it now. I’m not trying anymore. I will be Jewish in the way I want to be and behave how I want without considering how my Jewishness might be perceived.

It's always harder when you feel like you're alone in it, so it seems sensible for you to have sought out people online who will be able to relate :)

Take care of yourself, and please remember that it's ok for you to feel however you feel. The (presumably) most important people in your life are Jewish so you are directly affected by all the hate too, not just them.

Not sure where to post this now that the other thread is full, but @Hélène79 the antisemitic education consultant has posted an apology for their tweet in January....now that it's starting to impact their work.

Outstanding - 5 months it took an antiracist educator to work out her repeated claim of 'Jews control 96% of the media' was, in fact, antisemitic.

Bet she had her fingers crossed behind her back writing those tweets. Or the conference organiser.

noblegiraffe · 20/05/2024 07:27

Well indeed. Particularly when people tried to tell her at the time and she was having none of it and didn't even delete the tweet.

That's hilarious though. Stupid people really are the funniest

EllaDisenchanted · 20/05/2024 07:43

Someone is a definitely going to see this as a tea shop opportunity. It only really works outside of Israel though 😜

They're planning a protest outside a cinema which will be screening SuperNova. Not sure it will make a difference but if you feel up to it, please sign the petition which asks that they disallow the protest. It's the only way to keep things safe for those attending the screening.

This is actually really fucking upsetting. It's disgusting enough that they're protesting the film (sick, even), but I think that's actually a side-issue for them - they're specifically targeting a Jewish neighbourhood. Absolute scum. 😥

Ugh. I no longer live in London but that area has lots of childhood memories. Thanks for sharing the petition.

Thank you for the link , just signed.

I lived in Cricklewood when I was younger and had Jewish friends in Golders Green so quite close!

Signed.

PurpleChrayn · 21/05/2024 13:07

Signed.

Absolutely despicable.

Oh no, it looks like "from the river to the sea" might mean "eradicate all of Israel" after all 🥹🥹🥹 That's surprising.

noblegiraffe · 22/05/2024 22:22

You'll be saying that calling for an intifada might not be an entirely peaceful suggestion next.

25milesfromhome · 22/05/2024 23:10

Do you think when roving Hamas spokesman Khaled Mashal was this week praising and encouraging various "Floods" (student, financial, legal, Jihadi, armed, worldwide) to defeat Israel and dismantle the Zionist enterprise because annihilating the Zionists is good for humanity as a whole, he was actually signalling Hamas are fully onboard with a 2SS? It's hard to tell.

I mean, their charter says they support a 2SS so I'm not sure why you're even asking the question? It's right there, in the charter. Google it, I refuse to do the work for you etc etc

25milesfromhome · 23/05/2024 08:10

I do apologise, of course the charter is incontrovertible proof of their noble aims and they've said and done nothing whatsoever to contradict this, particularly in the last seven months. I don't know what I was thinking.
