Antisemitism

I read the posts on here with interest and often the subject of anti semitism comes up. I was brought up in a town in the South East. My mum gave me a book about Anne Frank when I was around 8 and I can remember asking ' what is a Jew?' as I had never met one. When I was about 14 a girl from northern Israel came to my school and I was asked to befriend her and help her settle in. I can remember being fascinated about her life in a Kibbutz and she used to show me
Hebrew writing. I don't recall ever hearing anything anti semitic about her or her brother as the only two Jewish kids - to my knowledge in the school. I also remember in my twenties encountering a group of lads from North London - white something and them having an absolute hatred for Jewish people. I can remember feeling utterly shocked as I'd never heard anti Jewish speak prior to this. Reading some of the recent posts on here it has made me wonder wherever there are pockets in the Uk with Jewish communities that experience antisemitism where the rest of the UK it does not occur as people simply have never met a Jewish person just their life- to their knowledge.Where I live I have only met 4 Jewish people in the Uk in my life and I am 47. The most Jewish people I have met were in Israel when I visited in 2000.

So depressing, all of it. I find it so sad and concerning that educated young people in the UK hold these views. I work in HE and feel so cowardly for thinking that I'm glad I use my (common British) married name instead of my (obviously Jewish) maiden name but it's true.

Did anyone hear the student from.the uni of Leeds who was interviewed on Radio 4 (Today programme) this morning? So much momentum-style parroting. Couldn't bring herself to say that she believes in Israel's right to exist. Plus a load of uninformed bollocks about colonisers, really showing her ignorance on so many things.

At the other extreme - I was blown away by the intelligence and eloquence of the two Jewish students interviewed on the Unholy podcast. So clever and insightful- wish I could be that articulate now in my late 40s, let alone when I was in my early 20s!

I've stopped looking at the student protest thread over there ➡️ who even cares what that crowd thinks with their endless sharing of IG and god knows what else. Ditto the Eurovision thread. Although I'm worried about what will happen at Eurovision. That poor girl has already been booed.

Solidarity with you all xx

@0palfrootee Yeah I heard that, robotic 'colononiser' soundbites and something about Jews have already got a home and it's not Israel. I can't remember who the other person being interviewed was, but her 'she's got some way to go' response was spot on.

Ha, I missed that gem.

Australian students : Today I interviewed two students at the University of Queensland anti-Zionist camp in Brisbane Australia.
I asked: ''How many civilians would it be justified to kill in order to liberate Palestine?'' They answered ''As many as necessary.''
''We 100% support Hamas and their right to resist. We want Hamas to succeed in their resistance movement.''

Hostage taking is apparently a necessary part of conflict.

Wow! I just can't get my head around this @EllaDisenchanted I want to dismiss it as "just a phase" with these youngsters but bloody hell it's so sinister that they hold these views.

I do see many problems with how Israel was established and the treatment of the Palestinian people then and absolutely now, the invasion of Rafah is simply horrific.

But the answer to the problem is not 'Disestablish Israel' and create a 'Nakba' for the Jews instead. There's no safe, sane way of doing that. I suspect there are some antisemites who will be like 'Ha, they can get a taste of their own medicine' but.... yeah, we had a taste of that medicine for 2000 years thanks very much.

You do realise that Gaza was part of Egypt until 1967 and the West Bank by Jordan until that time? It's interesting how the narrative of Israel's creation (by the UN no less), has been completely altered by social media in the space of a few years. The quote about history being written by the victors (attributed to Churchill) certainly applies to the social media "war" and that of Western institutions which seem to have been thoroughly routed by the far left.

The irony of Australian students (who don't look Aboriginal) moaning about Israel. Perhaps they should get the hell out of Australia and practice what they preach?

FairyBreadQueen · 11/05/2024 11:06

I am an Australian Jewish woman living in the UK and this made me snort.

Damned right. The hypocrisy!

Hélène79 · 12/05/2024 12:08

Don't agree with it all and I think it missed out a few points, or at least just merely hints at them ("one worldview"), but a pretty decent article.

That tolerance is by definition harder to find at the heart of a university encampment, because these are people taking action because they passionately share one worldview.

In the polarised way that we conduct debate, we often ignore the nuance – and threats – that all sides can experience

This isn't exactly about antisemitism (although should probably be shared with the posters who still seem to think Jews are all white European 😅) but I didn't want to start a new thread just for this -

Very interesting account giving an excellent idea of just how diverse Judaism is. I found it interesting anyway!

I literally don’t get this - what do they think they are going to achieve?

Righteousness (in the eyes of the ignorant) and socking it to the Jews. It's so devoid of any sense it's not worth trying to work out I suppose.

I mean it just seems counter productive to their cause.

Ugh, they did the same in Edgware the other day. And where I live they have been alternating tearing them down or crossing out the hostages eyes on all the posters. They've been doing that since October, including the Bibas children. It's just gross.

London feels horrible just now.

Humdingerydoo · 14/05/2024 20:55

You guyssss we need to do better! It's just been made clear that the reason anti-Semitism is constantly on the rise is because there are some Jews who don't actively denounce Israel, and by not denouncing Israel we are putting all other Jews in danger.

I'm proper fuming.

Hélène79 · 14/05/2024 21:25

Yes and the bad Jews who support the IDF are responsible for antisemitism in Manchester! Because the antisemites can't be responsible for their own actions. We make them do it! Or something like that.

I'm sorry you're going through this. It's absolutely awful. I imagine it's almost harder if you've not previously had to worry about these things and then all of a sudden having to deal with it. A lot of us grew up surrounded by anti-semitism so are able to shrug a lot of it off as though it's white noise. Probably harder to do when you're relatively new to it!

I think a lot of us on here are more left-leaning (despite what posters on the other board might think 😅) and therefore very confused as to where we belong now. You're not alone.
