Antisemitism

bubbleandsqueak1976 · 25/03/2024 19:22

I read the posts on here with interest and often the subject of anti semitism comes up. I was brought up in a town in the South East. My mum gave me a book about Anne Frank when I was around 8 and I can remember asking ' what is a Jew?' as I had never met one. When I was about 14 a girl from northern Israel came to my school and I was asked to befriend her and help her settle in. I can remember being fascinated about her life in a Kibbutz and she used to show me
Hebrew writing. I don't recall ever hearing anything anti semitic about her or her brother as the only two Jewish kids - to my knowledge in the school. I also remember in my twenties encountering a group of lads from North London - white something and them having an absolute hatred for Jewish people. I can remember feeling utterly shocked as I'd never heard anti Jewish speak prior to this. Reading some of the recent posts on here it has made me wonder wherever there are pockets in the Uk with Jewish communities that experience antisemitism where the rest of the UK it does not occur as people simply have never met a Jewish person just their life- to their knowledge.Where I live I have only met 4 Jewish people in the Uk in my life and I am 47. The most Jewish people I have met were in Israel when I visited in 2000.

That is unbelievable 😳 The word "trigger" appears in relation to "flags bearing the star of David."

The University of Warwick Conservatives Association issues a statement after footage showed people at its event singing Erika - a song that was used by the armed forces of Nazi Germany.

Oh that’s made me so sad 😞 I am pretty sure that’s Arnie Saunders. He’s screaming at him to condemn but he isn’t even giving him a chance to speak.

That's just gross. Everything he's shouting at him - gross anti-Semitism. I bet he's not shouting at other people to condemn anything the way he's shouting at the visibly Jewish person. He should be arrested for trying to intimidate an elderly person like that. And no one seems to be standing up against him? Just a bit "softly softly" but no one actually told him loudly to go away and leave the man alone. Don't get me wrong, the guy who was gently trying to help the elderly man to get away seemed kind, and I'm assuming he was helping him out for his own safety, but surely the aggressively shouting anti-semitic man should have been the one to be removed?

Yes, apparently that's who it is. His shaking hand has ended me. He got invited there and then got ambushed. Absolutely shameful.

With a more charitable interpretation, I got confused as to why the man was saying ‘you people come here asking for our vote’ so I googled and the rabbi is a Conservative councillor. It appeared to be some sort of political hustings rather than a multi faith event.

As no mention is made of him being Jewish, but there is about votes, one can hope that the haranguing is about the Conservative voting record/actions rather than pure antisemitism.

It is undoubtedly horrible to watch though.

Noble, with respect, this isn’t about him being conservative, that’s just the reason why he went there in the first place.
“Don’t come to the house of allah… when we know when you’re in your own places with your own people …”
He repeatedly said “when you’re with your own people”. I don’t think that’s language you typically use when you’re talking about a political party.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2024 11:08

No, but he does also talk about ‘you people who were invited here’ and is talking about him being invited as a Conservative to ask for their vote. ‘Other people’ are Labour and Lib Dem. So ‘own people’ would be conservatives. Unless he is flipping between ‘you people’ being Jews and ‘you people’ being conservatives, but everything he says about ‘you people’ conceivably applies to conservatives, particularly when he mentions Muslim immigrants.

The fact that he is Jewish probably inflamed things, but there is definitely some anti-Tory rage there, not simply antisemitism.

Hopefully you know that I would not try to minimise antisemitism for the sake of it, I just think there is more to this one.

I agree, you people in this context is very clearly not about him being a conservative.

two synagoguesicanada had their windows smashed last night

”The CJN that their video cameras captured on tape the motorcyclist pull up to their shul, remove two small objects from their pockets and throw the objects at their windows.
However, because the synagogue had not yet repaired their windows from the previous attack, this latest suspect merely threw the objects at polycarbonate covers that shielded already-broken glass.”

I actually found this point above more disturbing than the “successful” smashed windows attempt. So full of hatred you’re just lobbing stuff at covers from the last attack?

I hear what you’re saying, and I know you don’t minimise anti-semitism, so you’re writing in good faith. I can’t really argue with what you’re saying rationally because you’re right, it’s ambiguous, but in that moment it very much came across to me as saying here in the mosque you say one thing, but in your own places with your own people (synagogues/amongst Jews), you say something else. I’m sure him being a Tory is part of it too.

the most charitable thing would be to give him the benefit of the doubt, but in light of everything I’ve seen over the last 9 months, and the increasingly overt antisemitic comments I’m seeing constantly on every social media platform, I’m sorry, I just can’t do that right now.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2024 12:11

I totally understand where you are coming from, Ella and tbh I wouldn’t be too surprised (just very disappointed) if further information came to light which validated your interpretation, given, as you say, how things have gone in recent months.

Whatever the reason for it, it was still a horrible way to treat him and I hope he is getting support.

Humdingerydoo · 01/07/2024 12:11

I agree with @EllaDisenchanted , I think you're being a bit too generous there with your interpretation @noblegiraffe . "Your own places with your own people" - not sure how that can mean anything other than Jewish people and synagogues to be honest.

Hélène79 · 01/07/2024 13:02

I really want to be able to give a generous interpretation to that, but honestly, I just can't. There's a lot more going on there than just 'socking it to a Tory'.

Humdingerydoo · 01/07/2024 13:32

I know lots of people don't really like them, but did anyone see That Jewish Family's video from Vietnam? They were kicked out of a shop or restaurant because their 3 year old wore a kippah. Not sure how that's going to help free Palestine but he seemed to feel very strongly that it somehow would. Cats and dogs are welcome but not Jews.

Just watched it and made the mistake of looking at tThe comments on the YouTube short which are absolutely horrendous.

this is long but worth a read: personal accounts of antisemitism in therapy since 10/7 (both as clients and as therapists)

So utterly depressing

Bowib · 01/07/2024 19:30

just read through the ig stories, how completely completely depressing and weirdly common in some quarters of that profession it seems, it was a therapist that was screaming and pushing the lady from the other day, there’s lots on r/jewish about therapists denying oct 7th or just being generally awful to Jewish clients plus the ig stories.

I need to give social media a rest because every day there's something else.

How the fuck is inflicting bruises on an elderly Jewish man in a library helping Gaza. These people are bastards.

saw from the article listed in that thread, none of the staff working in the library called the police

“According to interviewees, police arrived and stated that while they received multiple calls, none were from library personnel.
According to Moritz, the man who put him in a headlock was allowed to leave even after the activist was pointed out to the police.”

what a disgrace. Like you I think I need a social media break, it’s not even everyday, it’s multiple and it’s just awful.
