Ok I have taken the bait because I think it's important we have somewhere to chat and decompress.

There is an awful lot of name changing going on and we must remember that although it should be, this is not a safe space. We are followed here and that is worth considering (especially if you don't want to be deleted)

I am grateful for all the love and support though and I thank each and every one of you. You are all stronger than you know. I wish I had something profound to say but I don't...: this will have to do!

@Humdingerydoo Bloody hell, sounds like a spokesperson for the Neturei Karta.

An orthodox Jew who posted on Shabbat and is quoting "Misrah". I despair.

what/who is misrah meant to be? mishnah?

I assume so?! Not sure what else they could mean! I was going to ask but I've already been called an anti-Semite so thought it best to just leave that poster alone for a bit 😂

EllaDisenchanted · 19/05/2024 11:31

I'm just reading that thread now. I'm on page 15, quite a few deletions, so obviously I'm missing loads of context, but 😨

i'll lyk when I have read up to there... there is no way it will be neturei karta. How would they have internet/smartphone???

I'm pretty sure they are a cult. Like Lev Tahor , which was denounced by the Jewish community, I think Neturei Karta are either hitting or have hit that point.

Any which way they certainly do not speak for the vast vast vast majority of Jews.

YaMuvva · 19/05/2024 11:52

Someone has just posted on a thread about Diane Abbott - which has not mentioned Israel/Palestine once - in a response to “I find your comments offensive” (after they randomly asked if I was autistic and also told me to fuck off) “Well I find carpet bombing offensive”. WTAF.

I'm not religious so answer me this. An Orthodox Jew wouldn't be using technology - for example posting on the internet - while it's still daylight on a Saturday. Like, say, 5 pm in the middle of May. Amirite?!

Waaaaiiiit I didn't see the time. Absolutely 100000% would not. You can go through every single post of mine with a fine tooth comb, and look at the dates and times, and compare them to the Shabbat start and finish times in the country I was in on that date, and I can 1000000% guarantee you I have never posted on Shabbat. and if you did the same for Jewishorthomum I guarantee you it would be exactly the same. It would be beyond unthinkable. I might have posted up to a min before candlelighting (this week was a few mins before) but even if the announcement about the hostages had been delayed until after candlelighting, my phone would have been turned off and would have had a horrible wait, or found out from my secular neighbours!

The only time my phone has been on on shabbat, was immediately after October 7th, when for pikuach nefesh , we had our phones on us, with the homefront command app, because the alert was sometimes quicker than the sirens to alert us, and also for when we were walking on the streets not near shelter, and because there were still concerns about terrorists not all captured, so it was a danger to life situation. But no I would not have been on mumsnet!!!It was on to be accessible, for life saving reasons, that was it!

it was shabbat in the UK, Israel, and USA at that point.

So I’m trying to learn more about Orthodox Jews and I thought you couldn’t generate electricity on Shabbat but you could use electricity already charged - which is why you can get lamps and fridges with Shabbat modes?? Have I made that up entirely?

Sorry my lack of knowledge of Orthodox Jews is woeful

They've been a cult from the outset. They make a point of showing up wherever they can to actively work against mainstream Judaism. They have met with Islamic Jihad terrorists in 2023, and they met with Haniyeh in Gaza in 2009.
And they are worse than everyone else because by their dress they give ammunition to the antisemites - the average antisemite or Hamas supporter sees them wearing their black hats and waving their Palestinian flags and protesting against Israel and doesn't understand that they are an extreme sect, they think 'Oh look, really religious Jews agree with us too, we must be right'.

They are a perfect example of when cherem is a good idea.

@EllaDisenchanted So this person isn't quite so orthodox after all then!

You're on the right track, but it's a bit more complicated than that - use of electricity on Shabbat falls under several prohibitions. The prohibitions on Shabbat are the 39 Avos Melachos (categories of work) that were used in creating the Mishkan in the desert (after the redemption from Egypt) - predating the first temple. It was like a portable temple we used in the desert.

Prohibitions it comes under includes igniting a fire, creating something new, building, and completion. (Rough translations from the Hebrew, don't take it very literally).

So how we use electricity would be allowed or banned depending on whether it violates a category. E.g. a light already on - fine, time switch, no issue, for the fridge, I have a shabbat mode in my current fridge, in the old fridge I took out the light bulb (otherwise opening the door completes the circuit for the light, which is problematic). Same issue turning on/off the light, as it completes/breaks the circuit. Some more stringent views also have issues with motor turning on if fridge door is open too long. I close the freezer door quite quickly, so it doesn't trigger the alarm.

My phone would be charged before Shabbat, but again, except under life saving circumstances, I would not use it, because using it will fall under multiple prohibitions.

also, never apologise for a lack of knowledge!

there are some AMA jewish orthodox threads if you want to know more, or I am always (mostly) happy to answer questions. 3 are in classics.

they've been around since pre the state of Israel, they were an offshoot of another group. Yes completely agree about cherem!!!

@Humdingerydoo was it you talking of the propaganda war? Ella posted a twix link on the hostages thread from 'persian princess'.
If you follow down it has a clip of a chap asking google questions on the holocaust & getting idk answers but getting a very partisan answer about the nakba. Will go try it myself in a mo.

I'm always talking about the propaganda war, so probably 😂 Twitter doesn't like me today so won't even let me open links. Just keeps asking me to sign up, which I refuse to do. Let us know how you get on!

I once got told (by an antisemite) that I was absolutely abhorrent and an antisemite just for simply pointing out that the Neturei are known for partaking in holocaust denial events. And my post was deleted. Mumsnet works in mysterious ways.
