Mumsnet is getting worse

Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

My personal highlight of today oh here has been someone suggesting that Palestinians using their children as human shields is akin to pushy stage parents.

Shock.

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 19:08

@etmoiandme that made me chuckle.

Almost as much as instagrammers complaining about the 'Jewish people constantly filming' while wearing tefillin.

Mind boggles.

EllaDisenchanted · 28/12/2023 19:09

@etmoiandme 😅😅😅😅

😂That's hilarious

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 20:20

@etmoiandme I Don't know or you saw the Israel truth project bit on that page with Michael Thaler? Lost his daughter in the Karnak Shomron terror attack in 2002. She was 16. He was born in a displaced persons camp and his original name was Yoel
Mendel.

Pennina · 28/12/2023 20:22

If anyone has a moment could you report this please? I have already, more the better. Horrid horrid post

This one

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 20:30

@Pennina I hate to ask but what thread is it on?
The level of bold posting and sheer propaganda is staggering at the moment but we must report the more overt antisemitism and apologist behaviour.

The IDF admits collateral damage... Christmas Eve one.

Truly awful. It's been an hour since I reported it!

0palfruity · 28/12/2023 21:03

I've reported it too - I think some of the others have been deleted now.

I think that board is out of control ( @mnhq @justinemumsnet I've said this before but you urgently need to arrange some antisemitism awareness training for your moderation staff, this is not your finest hour) but on the bright side i do think it's become something of an echo chamber for a particular group of posters. I'm guessing most people are staying away.

I have had about a 5% success rate getting them to take down very clear anti-American hate speech posts, and those few successes required extensive email exchanges and copying Justine. I think that if a post is aligned with their own personal prejudices they just don’t see it as hate speech.

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 21:45

@0palfruity completely agree.

@MissConductUS I have seen the finest anti American stuff at work and I don't know how you tolerate it. We can only report, report, report.

Pennina · 28/12/2023 21:57

Thank you all.

It's absolutely horrendous. They just do not understand or have any concept of the full picture. Just this very narrow binary view that takes no account of the long history that takes to where we are now.

I'd love to flight back more but like us all I'm trying to work, cook (for Shabbat) deal with kids etc etc. There are some fab people who give such long and educated responses. Cauliflowerpower springs to mind and course the great stomachcharmleon and purplechrayne to name but a few. Those just spring to mind but there are many of you who hold the ground so well and I'm so grateful when I see you guys posting.

I would very much appreciate it if others would report the anti-American posts. I think one reason why they just dismiss my reports because they know I’m an American.

No problem

It is difficult if you don't have enough people reporting posts to get mumsnet to take it seriously sometimes

BeggyMitchell · 29/12/2023 12:58

Sorry you're having to experience that MissConductUS Flowers.

etmoiandme · 29/12/2023 13:57

Don't know if it's the same one but I reported one ages ago about American food? It was gross, but also funny that a bunch of British women were telling Americans they don't know how to cook. I mean, we're not exactly famous for our cooking skills in the UK!

No indeed!

I can speak for myself there too Grin.

Yes, we're rubbish lazy cooks, poorly educated, thick, uncultured, pushy, have terrible healthcare, etc. I've heard it all.

I think the strangest one was a woman who thought it odd that many Americans don't live near an airport. I had to point out to her that England is smaller than the State of New York and that our population density is much lower than in UK. Perhaps she thought that Americans didn't have enough airplanes or pilots.

Possibly it was the one called 'Americans are lazy cooks'. So much prejudice on there, it was jaw-dropping. An American poster from the Midwest did a great job dispelling some of the stereotypes, as I think you did yourself @MissConductUS ?

I mean, it could have been an educational thread from the right perspective, a chance to learn about different cultures... but no.

I recently reported one which if you had substituted (for example) 'Pakistanis' for 'Americans' in the title MN would have deleted it like lightning. But instead they agreed to 'amend' the title. The tone of the posts was still offensive though.

Bunshaped · 29/12/2023 16:52

Changing the subject completely - I've only just seen the logo for BDS. What on earth is that all about??! It looks like something from Viz! 😄

Edited to add: Sorry, I appreciate my comment might come across as offensive, especially if the cartoon has some kind of significance, and I apologise if it does. I just hadn't seen it before.

Trulywonderful · 29/12/2023 17:06

You have nailed it, Viz 😂. We were having a giggle about the image when someone put it on the boycott thread. Seriously what were they thinking picking that? The bloke that draw it is apparently a famous cartoonist or something and dead now. However it doesn't stop that being a dreadful cartoon image and a ridiculous one to use if they want people to take them seriously.

I was on that thread and did my humble best to debunk some of the worst misinformation. I've been doing it for years, and it feels pointless at times. Fortunately, there are more Americans or British ex-pats living in the US on MN than I suspected, and plenty jumped in to help.

I've used that "substitute another nationality" argument with the MNHQ, and it just bounces off of them like a tennis ball off a wall. Their attitude seems to be, "Well, regarding Americans, it's true now, innit?".
