42 and starting IVF treatment tomorrow - would love some company for the journey ☺️

Hi ladies, so, as the title reads, I start the injections tomorrow evening. I have an appointment with my clinic (Care) tomorrow morning for the baseline scan and to get the treatment plan. Meds have arrived so we are ready to go! My AMH is 8.3 with follicle count of 14.

I had my son via IVF 11 years ago and was very lucky that it worked first time and on the NHS. This time it's private and costing a fortune. This is the only shot we have at this so we are feeling the pressure for sure.

I fell pregnant last month naturally (first time ever due to PCOS) but that ended in a chemical at 5 weeks. We are opting for PGTA testing and keeping everything crossed for a euploid.

Is anyone else starting this journey?

@IndigoBluey thank you! That's a lovely plan for your day off. I need to see what time my transfer will be and then make a plan for the day. Maybe go out for dinner.

I feel like wine with a roast sounds perfect! Being super strict just adds more stress for me so actually to relax a little with regards to diet and what I'm doing is probably not such a bad thing.

@overwork That's a good amount of follicles growing! Shame about the fluid being back though. Hopefully it clears up. My clinic wanted a breakthrough bleed and then a normal period before a transfer.

PearOpal · 20/10/2026 17:41

@overwork I think it's very clinic dependent or maybe a UK vs. EU thing. My clinic let me transfer during the "breakthrough" bleed cycle. Their logic was that it doesn't matter if its a true period because we're artificually controlling the cycle with the medicated frozen transfer. I have no idea if there are stats or studies on that but I thought I'd flag.

Congrats @IndigoBluey, I agree whatever your celebration of choice is you should absolutely do it! It's well earned

IndigoBluey · 20/10/2026 17:46

@overwork you’re so right, I’m definitely overthinking this and so nice to do the things we enjoy and relax. So at my clinic, they said to wait for first proper period after the breakthrough or the withdrawal period as they called it. But I don’t know if that was a recommendation or if it was strict advice.

poppymango · 21/10/2026 08:45

I just found out our only embryo is genetically abnormal and not suitable for transfer. I was sort of prepared for this, but it's still hard.

I emailed the clinic a week ago to ask if they'd had any updates because it had been over two weeks, and I only got a response today - apparently the results had been emailed to me last Thursday but had been sitting in my junk mail folder 🙄slightly annoying!

We are going to do a sperm DNA fragmentation test, and I think I need to start some kind of special diet or something. Recommendations welcome... I'm not sure where to start. Did anyone watch that Netflix documentary on microplastics? Clutching at straws perhaps but it seems silly not to throw everything at it.

We still have enough of the previous sperm sample left for one egg collection (which will be in a few weeks time) so I'm not expecting drastically different results for that one, although they have slightly altered my protocol. But I'd like subsequent ones to be better.

Just for reference, my numbers this time were:

AMH 10
10 eggs
9 mature
6 fertilised
1 day 5 blastocyst
0 genetically normal

Part of me thinks it's a numbers game, so we've just gotta keep going. But I will be 42 in less than 6 months and I'm starting to get scared.

overwork · 21/10/2026 09:31

@poppymangoit’s a gut punch isn’t it, I’m sorry. did you have ICSI or IVF do you know? We didn’t get any blast on our third round but it was looking good up day 3. They suggested it might be male factor, but said if we do PICSI (not sure what the difference is between that and ICSI) and he takes his supplements and stops his sauna habit, this would be everything they’d advise if he did have any issues with fragmentation. We got 3 (all abnormal though) the next time so something must have worked!

Wiennetta · 21/10/2026 10:12

I’m really sorry to hear that @poppymango. Hope you’re doing ok. The delay is especially annoying. Are you going straight for another round or taking some time off?

Happy to share the diet/supplements/lifestyle changes I’ve seen advised when I’ve been researching over the last few months. Only if you’re interested - don’t want to give unwanted advice!

poppymango · 21/10/2026 10:19

Thank you both. @overwork yes I will ask about PICSI for this round - might as well. @Wiennetta technically this was my month off - the EC was in September and my next cycle starts at the end of the month, so I'll be flying out to Greece again in about two weeks time. And yes please, any and all advice welcome! To be honest I was so overwhelmed with meds and flights and Airbnbs and all the rest of it last time, I was quite stressed and didn't really have the bandwidth to start thinking about special diets, I just tried to get through it. This time though I think it will be far less stressful because I have an idea of what to expect. I doubt I'll be able to implement a full plastic detox in the next fortnight but I definitely want to start moving in that direction too.

overwork · 21/10/2026 12:23

@Magix86was 20 eggs collected your clinics cut off for a fresh transfer?
How are you feeling about Friday?

Wiennetta · 21/10/2026 14:48

It’s so much to get your head around isn’t it. I know I was just overwhelmed by information and didn’t know where to start. Loads of terminology too. And I’m doing IVF locally so don’t have the added complexities you have @poppymango! I hope knowing you have another cycle ready to start has softened the blow a bit xxx

For me I used ChatGPT to suggest supplements and trawl through all the advice on diet and exercise.

We still have a way to go as we are now in the stage of waiting for a FET but we managed to get 4 good quality blasts to biopsy for PGT-A (out of 6 blasts in total). Of these 2 of the 4 came back euploid and both were top grades and had good IDA scores (the AI scoring our clinic uses). Obviously we don’t know what will happen next but we would continue doing what we are doing if we needed another retrieval as things seem promising so far.

This is a bit long but here’s what we thought was worth doing.

Diet: there is evidence that the Mediterranean diet supports fertility - we pretty much didn’t change our diet as we already eat plenty of fruit and veg and mostly unprocessed foods. However we weren’t strict at all and still ate out regularly, had cake or pastry out etc if we fancied it.

Alcohol: I basically stopped drinking about 6 months before we started IVF (when we started the process of consultations etc) DH didn’t - the evidence we saw suggested heavy drinking impacts fertility but light drinking doesn’t for men. He drinks maybe 2-3 pints a week so we didn’t think he needed to cut that out really.

Smoking: neither of us smoked anyway.

Exercise: we both exercise regularly anyway so didn’t change anything.

Heat: DH has avoided saunas.

Sleep: we made sure we were getting good sleep where possible, seemed like reasonable evidence to support this. I take magnesium glycinate in the evenings which helps.

Plastics etc: we didn’t do anything other than we didn’t heat up or store foods in plastics. We thought this was easy to do and didn’t cost anything. I did look into it but it seemed a bit of a minefield and I didn’t have the energy to look into it properly - so would be interested in what others are doing.

Supplements: we started a few about 6 months before our first cycle when we knew we were heading for IVF.

DH - Wellman Conception Max plus Omegas plus additional CoQ10 (there is CoQ10 in the Wellman but it’s a low dose).

Me - Ovum Time To Conceive plus additional CoQ10 (again the Ovum is a low dose). I took 600mg CoQ10 total split into 3 doses.

The Ovum seemed like a good balance of various vitamins/minerals that show promising evidence. Zita West also do one which is meant to be good.

Our clinic said if there is one thing they recommend beyond a generic healthy lifestyle - it’s CoQ10. There’s promising evidence it improves euploidy rates and embryo quality.

I also took high dose Omegas with a good balance between EHA and DPA but this is because I’m veggie and don’t eat fish so not getting much Omegas from my diet.

Post egg-retrieval I am now also taking a probiotic to support the vaginal microbiome as there’s evidence that pregnancy rates are higher where certain strains of healthy bacteria are present in the uterus and vagina. I thought worth taking to prepare for a FET as unlikely to do any harm and it’s not expensive.

The other thing we did was DH abstained for only 48 hours pre-egg retrieval day as we have seen evidence that shorter abstinence is associated with lower DNA fragmentation.

Hope that’s useful and interested in what others are doing!

Wiennetta · 21/10/2026 15:15

Actually one more thing to add on diet, I prioritised getting enough protein. Especially during stims I got 80g protein a day.

overwork · 21/10/2026 15:22

Well everything that you did seems to have worked a treat @Wiennettabecause 2 euploids from one round is an extraordinary result!

We are feeling very grateful at the moment @overwork for being in this position.

overwork · 21/10/2026 17:37

Brilliant, you’ve done the hard work now so let’s hope the transfer is just as successful! I’m finding stims so uncomfortable this time around. I have more follicles than usual so maybe I’m feeling it more. It’s like I’m wearing a pair of trousers that’s too tight all the time

Wiennetta · 21/10/2026 19:19

Sorry to hear you’re uncomfortable @overwork but yay for the good follicle count! What day are you on of stims? I just lived in joggers for the last few days and first few days after collection.

Im sure there are some transfers this week including @Magix86 so good luck to all!

IndigoBluey · 21/10/2026 21:36

@poppymango I’m really sorry to hear that, such a blow when it is not the news you want. Try and take it easy these next few days.

@Magix86 all the best for tomorrow, will be thinking of you and hope it goes well.

@overwork the bloating is so
uncomfortable, not sure if you are up to some light walking but I felt that helped.

Magix86 · 21/10/2026 22:40

Oh @poppymango I'm so sorry 😞 can imagine how difficult that must be, and with the added stress of organising flights abroad etc. Have you read the book 'it starts with the egg'? It's recommended by so many people, I got it and found it really interesting. @Wiennetta has shared some brilliant advice but the one thing my clinic suggested was coq10. I read a lot about this and apparently the ubiquinol version is better absorbed by women who are around our age - its more expensive but I guess there's a reason. I think up to 600mg per day and splitting the dose into 3 times a day as there's a limit to what you can absorb in one go. And to also take it when eating food.
Mediterranean diet also.
I'll be wishing you all the luck for your next round.

@Wiennetta amazing news to have 2 euploid! Well done. Do you know when your FET is likely to be?

@overwork really good about the follicle numbers in that ivf seems to be a numbers game! But sorry it means you're feeling uncomfortable. Did they increase your stims this time? Or might just be a cycle with naturally more follicles for some reason. We had the same for our third round. It wasn't 20 eggs collected, it was 20 follicles over 10mm at the point of trigger. The reason they decide before egg collection is so they can switch the trigger to non hcg to prevent ohss. When is your next scan?

Thanks @IndigoBluey and everyone else for the well wishes! Transfer all booked in for tomorrow. Feeling good about it this time but also apprehensive knowing it's untested and the only other embryo from the round that we had our son from. I feel like the likelihood of this one also being good is low but then you never know! So will be hoping. And we're also using embryo glue this time. No idea if it will help but it doesn't seem like it can hurt so why not.

overwork · 21/10/2026 23:03

Ahhh okay. I will look carefully at what they are measuring at my next scan Friday! I’m not expecting 20, I just wondered at what point it becomes a risk. Best wishes for tomorrow, I can’t see why lightning can’t strike twice

Magix86 · 22/10/2026 15:01

We have one little embryo safely on board! It was a 3AB when frozen and since thawing has expanded to a 4AB. Progesterone level also good at 82. Now the awful 2ww to get through!

@IndigoBluey all the best for tomorrow! Will be thinking of you.

@overwork hope your scan goes OK tomorrow too 🤞🏻

overwork · 22/10/2026 15:08

Oh wow this all sounds really positive! Fingers crossed! Best of luck for tomorrow @IndigoBlueyI hope your transfer also goes smoothly.

Aww amazing @Magix86! keeping my fingers crossed for you and your little embryo. Great news it was developing so well when defrosted too!

I’m waiting for my first period after ER then I can hopefully start my transfer cycle! But I’m away for a bit next month so may end up having to delay (bit annoying!). Don’t really know until the period arrives and I can get a better sense of dates.

redredwine40 · 23/10/2026 11:41

Hi all, I've been following this group for a while. I am starting IVF in January when I'll be 42. I already have a 9 year old from IVF with my ex partner. Due to my age now we are going straight for IVF although we have been trying for nearly a year now.

I am taking CoQ10 as heard that's good for egg quality. I have a fairly healthy diet (probably not enough exercise though!)

Anyway, we have decided not to go ahead with PGT but I wondered on what your thoughts were on having 2 embryos implanted. Has anyone considered this or would you not want to as would rather not have twins?

Wishing everyone luck on their journeys 🩷

IndigoBluey · 23/10/2026 18:11

@Magix86 good news I’m glad your transfer went well. Mine was good today too, it’s over so quickly! Looking forward to
getting home and chilling with a takeaway.

@overwork hope you got on ok with your scan today

overwork · 23/10/2026 18:33

Well done @IndigoBluey! All the hard work is over now you can just relax! Scan went well, have 9 in range today so hoping for a couple more after another 3 days of it. I am so uncomfortable, like I’m wearing a pair of jeans that are too tight around the waist and can’t take them off. Egg collection booked for Monday. We’ve just had an inspection announced by our regulatory body next week so this week has been absolutely manic trying to get all the evidence ready. It couldn’t be worse timing but goodness me I’ve earned the sedation rest at the end of all this!
hello @redredwine40nice to have you here. CoQ10 definitely seems to be the big one! I have asked for 2 to be implanted this time (pretty sure it’s in NICE guidance for 40+ with a failed transfer) but they are still debating whether they agree. I absolutely don’t want twins but I also don’t think it’s a remote concern for me - I can’t get one good one so the chances of getting two and both implanting are pie in the sky!

Magix86 · 23/10/2026 21:49

Yay well done @IndigoBluey hope you enjoy that takeaway 😀

@overwork sounds like good news with the scan today! Hope another few follicles catch up for Monday

@redredwine40 hello! We also aren't testing our embryos and have ended up with 9 frozen remaining atm. We've discussed with our clinic and are keen to do a double transfer next time if this one doesn't stick. Mostly because the quality of our remaining embryos aren't that great and also because they're untested so the likelihood of both sticking are low. But also I'm actually fine with having twins lol.
